The overwhelming turnout led the State of California to follow suit, and now California is the first state in the Union to offer state-funded vasectomies to men who have been diagnosed as obese.
Why would a state adopt such a controversial program? The basis is simple: vasectomy is a popular method of birth control (in 1983, figures showed that approximately 10 million men had been sterilized in the U.S. since 1969). By offering such a highly effective form of birth control freely to men who, by clinical diagnosis, have been deemed genetically inferior to the normalized median of homo sapien development, such a gene line would effectively be eliminated. Don't flame me for saying this, but I agree with that train of thought.Obesity has gotten way out of hand in this country.Originally Posted by Melonie

the slippery slope here is just exactly what other groups San Francisco and the State of California may also decide are genetically inferior in the future ? Smokers ? Blacks ? Hispanics ? Straights ? Of course, the state funded 'snip job' is purely voluntary ... so far !

Im so offended OTB.....soo out of line! JK
IMO this doesnt really get to the root of the problem. Offering free vasectomies in order to prevent obese offspring?...who thought of that crap? Being obese is surely a disease and is widely excepted b/c there are SO many obese ppl here in america. I understand that there may be severe issues in all parts of the persons mind to want to stay that way...but neuturing guys to control obese population is ridiculous.

You gotta be kidding me.
On a lighter note, sections of Los Angeles, for years, have been practicing eugenics, and surgically mangling people for the appearance of good genes....... ; P

This isn't eugenics, since the daughter of a girl with DDD cup implants is unlikely to naturally develop DDD cup breasts ! But there is some evidence that California has benefitted from gene pool skimming, by virtue of the fact that 'great looking' people from all over the USA and the world have been migrating to California for the past 80 years in hopes of a movie career ! Some have argued that while California may have inherited a surplus of 'good looking' genes, that 'common sense' genes are in short supply !sections of Los Angeles, for years, have been practicing eugenics, and surgically mangling people for the appearance of good genes
Actually, the supposed determination that obesity qualifies as a 'disease' is mostly legal, i.e. employers are prevented from discriminating against obese people in the same way they are prevented from discriminating against diabetics or HIV+ people (even though their condition may lead to statistically higher medical expenses and shorter careers). The smoker's rights lobby makes the point that smoking and obesity share many of the same legal characteristics i.e. both are avoidable by personal discipline and both are theoretically related to a genetic pre-disposition. Yet smoking is not considered to be a 'disease' thus employers are not prevented from discriminating against smokers.Being obese is surely a disease and is widely excepted b/c there are SO many obese ppl here in america
On the other hand, while male homosexuality also shares these same legal characteristics as well as elevated health risks, the 'gay' lobby has tried very hard to avoid any association with the word 'disease', and has instead pursued 'equality' based on sexual orientation being a logical extension of existing male/female sex equal rights protections - thus legally speaking 'gays' have become a protected class, while obese people and smokers have not.

I was being lighthearted.......
Well, as a lifelong Californian, and recent traveler, I would say that the "good looks" aspect of CA is a "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality, people don't want to look "trashy" so they enhance their looks to go with the big house and big car they can barely afford. As for CA politics, it's a sheltered-living mentality + no one can agree on anything situation.

All these men are consented so what's the problem??? They understand what is going on and what will happen. It is not forced... well not yet. I do understand the question that if this will open the door to sterilizing certain ethncities etc... but these men right now are consented so they know what is going on.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

This is exactly it... why obesity? Why didn't they pick say, the mentally ill or people with diseases like muscular dystrophy (not to say they should, but why the obese?)Originally Posted by Melonie

might have started with obese men because of the funding for this particular program.Originally Posted by erotictonic

I'm really surprised feminist organizations haven't ruled this is a sexist initiative. How come obese women aren't offerred free sterilization as well?
I dunno about you, but obese men seem to be the lowest percentage of those here in California that are breeding. Fat, obese, 350lb+ guys cant get a date... nonetheless pop out a kid.
On the other hand, it only takes a visit to any grocery store to see some beached whale woman, 400lb+ pushing a triple seater baby carriage and two more fat kids tailing behind on foot... while the 125lb husband is skimming through the National Geographic in the magazine aisle with an obvious hint of drool while thumbing through tribal pics of malnourished African women with breasts slapping their kneecaps in still-blur motion photos.
Hopefully I've offended someone.. I gave it a dire try.
It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.

LOL I've seen that couple everywhere. Damn do they get out.

I would assume because Californians in general would offer up little in the way of objections to reducing the number of overweight people they must associate with every day. On the other hand, they do not have to associate with the mentally ill, with people who have advanced MD, etc. on a daily basis. This would also create additional controversy because of the legal difficulty of getting a mentally ill or genetically diseased person to 'volunteer' for sterilization. This is exactly it... why obesity? Why didn't they pick say, the mentally ill or people with diseases like muscular dystrophy (not to say they should, but why the obese?)
However, once the precedent is in place regarding obese people, the other issues you raise are just a slight distance further down the 'slippery slope'. A step farther down that 'slippery slope' would be say mandatory sterilization of mentally ill or genetically diseased persons. Another step farther down that 'slippery slope' would be mandatory abortions of the unborn children of mentally ill or genetically diseased parents. Yet another step farther down that 'slippery slope' is the euthanasia of mentally ill or genetically diseased or other persons a la Terry Schaivo. With medicare/medicaid costs rising astronomically (medicare is this year paying out more money than it takes in via taxes for the first time), such possibilities are trillion dollar issues !
This is ludicrous. Several reasons:
1. not all obesity is a disease. maybe some causes are (thyroid, etc) but many are simply the person's inability (or lack of desire) to keep big macs, fries, double chocolate shakes out of their mouths and the unwillingness (or lack of desire) to walk and get daily exercise. This isn't a physical disease. Might be the American society's social disease...but that's not the same
NOTE: if someone chooses to or is pre-disposed to eating alot and not exercising..that is their right. Just don't ask for special treatment (or free operations) because of it
2. FREE vasectomies? Wow..my bf wants one, how much weight does he have to gain before the state will donate this service to him? How much abuse witll that system take? Do we as taxpayers want to underwrite this effort? Has CA got enough money they can do this...then we should reduce the Federal flow of cash to them. My federal tax $$$ allows programs like this.
3. slippery slope. WHo will be inferior next? WHo gets to decide?
4. genetic evidence. We're GUESSING that obesity is genetic...we have no idea, yet we plow ahead.
5...actually my list goes on but I'm tired.

it's arguable that THIS is closer to the true issue ... California spending $1 million dollars on an 82 year old lady who broke both of her legs and then stayed in hospital for a year !
"SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) - An 82-year-old woman who has refused to leave Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Medical Center for more than a year and has run more than $1 million in unpaid medical bills was removed from the hospital Tuesday on a judge's order. (snip)"

APRIL FOOLS!!!
That whole website was set up for a prank on the media and people who get sent stories and post them without any thought or investigation.
These guys have been around for a while setting up pranks like this. Each one has gotten better. They submit their story to fark.com and it goes from there. "Journalists" these days harvest stories from fark all the time. It's a great collection of odd news and such.

Disclaimer
Oh, please. You didn't think we'd go silently into that good night, did you? Yep, it's Joe and Bill again. Hi, and happy April Fools' Day!
Yes, this is a FAKE Medical Journal website for a FAKE medical association, complete with a fake voicemail system. Most of the stories and articles you read here are true... Just not that one that probably brought you here. Sorry about that. I know how badly you wanted it to be true (because hey, it wouldn't have made the news under your name if you DIDN'T). Alas, it's not. We made it up.
Why, you ask? Well, we're still tired.
Once again, we've proved that so-called "journalists" at so-called "reputable news agencies" are so-called "Fucking lazy". Furthermore, bloggers... Shame on you! It's not like we didn't drop about two billion clues that this particular article might not be full to the brim with medical fact, you know. The integrity part of Journalistic Integrity has been left completely by the wayside, and reporters / writers / disc jockeys / what-have-you are simply scraping sites like Fark.com and BoingBoing.net for news and updates.
Bloggers: after Rathergate, we all figured "Wow... Blogging has finally made it!" Well, this is very very true - and because of that, we need to be more dilligent than ever about the things we propigate across the web as news.
Mainstream Media: We want NEWS. Not ratings. Not sensationalism. Not "I got there first." No one cares about your scoop or your career - what we DO care about is that you maintain the journalistic integrity that you supposedly adhere to in that career. We care that you give us NEWS. Real, no kidding information -- not conjecture and rumor. We're sick of it, guys. And we want you to help us, an incensed American public, get the information that we rely on you for. We TRUST you, and we want you to quit abusing that trust. So here's a bit of actual, no kidding news that you can start with:
We're not done yet. Not by a long shot.
These little pot-shots at entertainment and social "news" are just the beginning. Bill and Joe are just getting warmed up. And we won't stop until you make it absolutely certain that our job is done. Yep, you have the power here. All you have to do is YOUR JOB. Research the stories you cover, make calls, verify facts. Give US, those who trust you, real information - not just your best guess or your next pulitzer.
And to the dilligent bloggers and journalist (Note: ONE journalist) out there who did check in and research, thank you. And thank you for your support in our cause.
Joe and Bill

Um I was wondering why I wasn't pullng anything up on the author of the article... oh well...
