Default calling all environmentalists... only 1/3 left

I'm sure all the environmentalists here will love this one...
it might be more fun to disprove some of the statements...

Two-thirds of the world's resources are used up...according to
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/internatio...447863,00.html
"The human race is living beyond its means. A report backed by 1,360 scientists from 95 countries - some of them world leaders in their fields - today warns that the almost two-thirds of the natural machinery that supports life on Earth is being degraded by human pressure...."

Of course a lot of that enviromental damage (especially what is due to over population) is centered in the developing world. Better energy use, more efficient agriculture, etc. might help.

I would also add that the population of tigers in the wild is down to only about 5000 now.

I'm sure everything's fine. Just keep wasting stuff.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

Tiger population down? Let's make some more "Ligers" (Lion/ tiger hybrid.) ("Napoleon Dynamite" fans, they really exist!)
Heh. No really, we're in for a nauseatingly exciting new millenium in terms of environment and world population. Look at the diseases trimming the ranks of people- AIDS full blown and barely controlled in Africa, SARS, assorted other human/ animal diseases thisclose to causing ruin of health and wealth......not to mention barely predictable events like tsunamis or terrorist attacks. Or massive poorly planned wars. (Ahem.)
And as much as I am tempted to not give a crap and live a selfish wasteful life, I think of my lovely family, and how I want them to have the same good life I have. Quality of life is not always measured in material wealth or the schools I went to- it is finding a way to live a life that is full up of the things you really need.
If my forebears survived European conquest, plague, war, starvation, corrupt government and poor education, we all can survive cruddy tap water and urban sprawl. We really don't realize how lucky we are.

If the whole world lived at US consumption standards, there'd be only enogh resources for about 2BB people. That's 2/3 of us gone, folks!

Truth is, our standard of living wouldn/t change if we simply started wasting less and being more efficient with resources (including land). We CAN make and drive cars that use less fuel and resources in production, developers CAN make more money and build as many homes using methods that conserve more than 50% of each property. our economy CAN dictate that all imports to the US must be made in factories that are at least as efficient as US equivalents. Much of our packagng CAN be replaced by recyclable or biodegradable equivalents (which will come down in price once economy of scale is reached). THe list goes on.

It's about sustainability - also known as balancing Economics, Environment and Lifestyle - part of that is Ethical behavior. And why I formed www.ASCusHOW.org. Interested in helping make a difference? ASCushow!

Other good resources include Co-Op AMerica's Green Pages and Greenseal -

I'd be happy to help anyone interested - it's what I do.

I just don't necessarily believe in such statistics, having heard gloom-n-doom since the late '60s/early '70s that were highly inflated in order to push a point. Environmentalists can lie as facilely as industrialists.

I also don't believe we should be wasteful and that, indeed, our planet's resources are limited. It would be best not to bring ourselves to the limits.

"Good steward" has been pretty catchy for me these last 20-30 years.

Statistics or not, sustainability just makes sense. Doesn't matter how you get there. It also makes dollars, as everyone from White Dog Cafe, 7th Generation, Ben & Jerrys, Entercom Communications and even my little company have proven. What's not to like?

When reading the title of this thread ... 'Calling all Environmentalists, only 1/3 Left' .... it immediately struck me that the title must be in error i.e. 98.6% of Environmentalists are from the Left !

Mel, you couldn't be farther from the truth...statistically. Though I prefer the term "sustainability advocates" or "conservationists" the reality is:

According to a USA today poll that called several thousand Americans...74% believed in issues like clean air and water...far more (statistically) than considered themselves liberal

on the "environmental" charities I help with, nearly 2/3 of the board members are conservative...almost half are Republican - represents rather fairly our membership and differs from your beliefs.

Of course you know the beginnings of the environmental/conservation movement of the US hark back to Lincoln and Roosevelt - VERY conservative Americans. I've already provided links about the conservative Republicans involvd in preserving the REFUGE.

"The conservation of natural resources is the fundamental problem. Unless we solve that problem it will avail us little to solve all others."
    Theodore Roosevelt, October 4, 1907

What about GHW Bush? Though very conservative, he held environmental practices to be VERY important, and got us involved in many of the early programs and treaties his son has abandoned.

"We hold this land in trust for the generations that come after. The air and the Earth are riches we simply cannot squander."
Former President George H. W. Bush

Try the book "Margaret Thatcher: A conservative Environmentalist"

Thoughts of a Conservative Environmentalist, Part II
    http://www.rep.org/news/GEvol2/ge2.1_GordonDurnil.html

http://repamerica.org/ - a great organization called REPUBLICANS for environmental preservation should help correct your thinking.

    Conservative Environmental reforms
    http://www.perc.org/publications/gui...ideconserv.php

True, a few prominet modern conservatives have abandoned these principles...but they have also abandoned the goals of fiscal responsibility (out of control deficits that are threatening the GLOBAL economy as outlined in this month's NEWSWEEK "Falling dollar" article), small government (social security reform, TSA, and most other administration programs have and will GROW the size and extent of government. Sadly, our current leaders believe:

"Conservation is not a sufficient basis for a sound, comprehensive energy policy."
Vice President Dick Cheney, May 2001

Personally I discount them as conservatives (certainly don't share my values) and believe their thougts on environemental issues are in the minority - it was other concerns that got them elected (like the war they started and the fact the other side barely promoted an agenda).

Our leaders have softened rules on mercury emissions, allowed more logging of publicly owned lands out west and have actually provided tax incentives to buyers of only the most gas-guzzling vehicles. Any grade-schooler knows the Earth contains only so much petroleum, coal and pristine forest. But, in refusing to institute a rational policy, we are losing precious time for a successful transition to sustainable energy. One of the more recent policy movements is to end national protection of 58.5 million acres of roadless land in National Forests…

Mel.. thanks for pointing out the unintentional pun.

Here's a link for today only...I guess environmentalists need to think about preventing
environmental damage to the moon as well:
