(HELP) Erasing Info. on "Burnt" CD

I have a few plain "burnt" CDs that I would love to re-use.... problem is I don't know how to erase all the files and information that I have on these "burnt" CDs so that I can re-use them (burn them again).

They were just plain blank CD-R disks. I want them to go back to their "original" state (as such)...... just like you can delete/re-format a floppy disk... I'm wondering if you can do the same with "burnt" CDs ??

Any free programs that can do this ? Any programs via Windows that do this ?

    Thanks for the

PS I didn't know where to post this question so please move it to the appropriate section if need be... please

I thought you couldn't do that unless you burned it a special way. I forgot what the special way is called but...I dunno I wasn't aware you could just erase the disc and re-record on it.

    LSM

I was just wondering if you could. If anyone has any information on that "special way" of burning a CD that LSM was referring to in her post (above)... please do reply!

It just feels like such a waste to discard them. I already have plenty of "drink coasters" (as that is the only other use I can find for CDs that I no longer want/need).

Okay.. just learnt from EmailCash Forums that due to the CDs being CD-R .... I can only "add" more stuff on to them (multiple sessions).

I needed CD-RW if I wanted to have "re-write-able" CDs.

So there you go. FYI for everyone who wanted to know (including me)

Actually, even with the CD-RW, it's not really good to re-use the CD. Yes, they say that they are rewritable...but, in all of the cases that I've re-written to a previous burnt CD, the majority of those files became corrupted...unusable. Can you rewrite to those CD's? Sure, you can...not advisable, however. It's better to just "shred" the CD's you're getting rid of and burning new CD's.

Floppies suck, but at least you could reformat them...not possible with the CD.

My CD-RW's are always getting screwed up and almost never play in the car or outside of a computer when I make them audio CD's. CDr's are so cheap, I just buy them in bulk.........

Instead of using CDs, I'd rather just buy one of those USB flash drives. They're worth it in the long run.

They make nice frisbees, as well as coasters. I'm with Katrine and Venus on this one. I've had nothing but problems with CD-RW's. CDR's are so cheap now I throw it away and get a new one, if it comes to that.

CD-RWs formatted for music do not play in regular CD players. No one expects them to.

CR-RW is not just a format or writing it a "special way", it is a very different kind of CD. Once you write on a CD-R, you cannot 'erase' it. A layer is actually "burned" away.

(But you can find a way to inefficiently write more on it if you have not 'closed' it. Even this will NOT overwrite what has already been burned on it.)

Best way to securely erase a written CD-R is to break it up and melt it. Replacements don't cost very much anymore.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

or hey how about those people you see in traffic with a cd hanging from their rear view mirror? or perhaps use them as nifty reflective wallpaper in a hallway or something. carry one in your purse for an emergency makeup mirror.

This is all mostly true, however most CD burning programs will let you "erase" or "overwrite" data on CD-R's, provided the disk isn't closed. It doesn't really "erase" or "overwrite", the space taken by the data is still used up "permanently burned" but the filenames/paths are removed from the header information. Basically it means that, it's really still there but you can't see it.

For data disks, most CD burning programs data disk mode defaults to "close session, leave disk open" which means that you can add to, "erase" or "overwrite" the files in a later session but as above, it's not really erased or overwritten it just appears to be - if you had 200M of data on a 700M disk, "erasing" the existing data you still only have 500M of free space.

As others have noted, CDR's are so cheap that I never bother with CDRW's. I sometimes use a "used" CDR for burning a one-off quickie, like driver software or something to give away, or when there's not a new blank handy. Actually this has saved my bacon on the job before, when I had to get something on a CD and no new ones were available.

Okay.. basically.. I should stick with my CD-Rs... once they have been used just turn them into a baby mobile, frisbee, drink coaster, rear view mirror adornment, emergency mirror, retro type of wallpaper... or just throw them away.

I was planning to 'write' music to the disk and therefore I require it to be useable outside of the computer (CD players and so forth).

    Thanks for the help everyone

I'm sure everyone's already said this...but I have nothing else to do, so I will chime in and say that I have seen many problems with both RW discs as well as non-closed discs of any type. they're so damn cheap, I don't mind burning and pitching. And they really do fly well....and I always need another coaster for me brew.

Katrine...you may want to buy a new stereo for your car that will play CD-R/CD-RW. We just got one and Scorpio loves it! We also got a player that plays MP3...it comes with XM radio. Love XM...so much better than the regular radio.

    Just a thought.
