Default exercise, bodyfat%, and loss of menstruation?

OK, so I don't get my period anymore, and I don't mind, but I do at the same time. I work out six days a week, I run at least three miles a day, and I also weightlift, my body fat % is at 9% and I am 5'6 and about 120 lbs. I am worried because I don't get my period anymore, and I wonder if this is going to do any serious damage to my body. Has this ever happened to anyone else before?

Yep. Happened to me when I ws in the Army. It is serious; you need enough body fat to keep getting your period. Your body fat % is related to your ability to produce estrogen, which in turn is relted to your ability to lay down calcium deposits in your bones. You may not feel any effects now, but keeping yourself in this condition too long can lead to osteoperosis and, I think, kidney damage.

Hey, to answer your question ScreaminPeachez, yes you should be fine. A healthy body fat percentage for a women is 16% and up, so at 19 you will be fine. When I was at 11% I still had my period, but I as soon as it my bf % hit the single digits, my period stopped. So as long as you stay in the double digits, you should be fine.

I think that's called ammenorhea. Ballerinas and gymnasts get it often. Try a google.

too long to be at a low BF... any m.d. will tell you to bring it back up to at least 14% and you can dip down to single digits BF for a short period of time for photo shoots, competitions, etc... By the way how are you testing your BF by the calipers?

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

My personal trainer tested it with that clamp thingy (I guess thats a caliper), and he also tested it with the electronic thing. Sorry I don't know of the technical names for these things lol.

Miss ChocolateKiss, I also had this problem when I was training for competitions. I regulated this by taking low dose birth control pills. I use it to regulate my flow, I just see prevention of conception as a side benefit

The pill would help with that. Iam your height and use to weigh 102 I could never gain weight, my body fat was 19-20% though and I would miss periods for months. When I got on the pill it regulated them.
