Sad OMG, I can hardly handle the itching!!!!

Ok, I've been tanning for a very long time and this has happened before but it was so long ago, I can't remember what happened.

Once I hit a certain point in teh bed, I start getting these really itchy bumps. They aren't visible at all and aren't like body acne. I've turned the fan on full blast and flip over frequently while tanning. Each time I flip, I grab the towel and wipe up any sweat. It hasn't helped.

The bumps are only on my back and my chest. This time it's gone all the way up to my collar bone. Before, it was typically just between my breasts (and that area doesn't even touch the bed). It's not the lotion because I've been using it for awhile.

Anyone else have this issue? I itch so bad but when I scratch it just hurts but feels SO good.

Help! What can I do? (and no, I won't stop tanning so please don't say that)

okay I'm presuming you have a base tan already, do you? What type of bed was it low, medium, or High pressure? How often are you tanning? What type of lotion are you using? Have you tried a stand up bed to rule out the bed cleaner? Do you have any perfumes or moisturizers (other than the lotion) on before you tan? Has reducing your time and frequency of your exposure schedule helped? Is it possible the salon changed the bed cleaner solution? Have you made them aware of your situation as well? does it itch only during tanning, after tanning and for how long?

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I do have a base tan. I never get very dark but what I have is base for me. It was just the regular ol' bed that I went it. I go about 3 times a week, 14 minutes at a time. I use the lotion "smoke"...it's not a tingle lotion or anything. My salon doesn't have stand up beds. I'll ask them about the cleaning solution. I wasn't wearing any perfumes or lotions (besides the tanning lotion) I haven't adjusted the time or frequence. It only itches after I tan and for like that whole day. I just showered and the hot water felt so good on the bumps but right now it itches. I put some cortizone creme on the areas i could reach and that helps some but now I have to go on my date stinking, haha. Usually the next day they don't itch anymore but they are still there. Oh, and during tanning I can kind of feel them coming on....

Tia, I'm so sorry to hear about your experience. Sell that bed on ebay girl. Make you some money!! Find out the weight of it and shipping costs though first before you decide a shipping fee ;o)

My bumps go away completely after a few days. It's seriously like a rash but not visible.

I used to have that problem when I tanned in regular beds . Weird bumps would pop up on my body mostly around the chest area. I never found out what was causing them but, I did notice that mostly happened in beds with dim bulbs. Alot of the tanning salons don't change the bulbs as often as they should. Anyway, I switched to a high pressure bed in a salon that was known for having quality beds and maintaining all of their beds. I never had that problem again. You might also want to try cleaning your body with alcohol after you tan. That worked for me too.

Well you are using a good lotion. Going everyother day which is good. Doesn't seem like it's the cleaning solution since the area between your breast doesn't come into contact with the bed. But just to make sure ask if they've change the cleaning solution and what brand or chemical mixture they use. Try to see if decreasing your time in the bed has any effect. But it sounds like you have a common tanning bed issue, I have this problem too when i get to serious tanning in the summer. it happens in the same area between my breast, on my upper part of my stomach, and some parts of my back. It's from the combinaton of dry skin and heat . To get around it moisturize more like 3 x a day with a good after tanning moisturizer like Cat's Pajama's or Body Drench or any lotion that does not contain mineral oil or alcohol. Keep on using the Hydrocortizone while the itching is going on and benedryl if needed. Oh also exfoliate once a week from head to toes once a week on a day you do not tan.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I know my salon doesn't change the bulbs as often as they should. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten in to a bed only to realize some bulbs are out. The only reason I go to this place is because a friend of mine owns it. Maybe I'll have to up my membership so I can go in the BIG beds and see if that helps?

If I do switch to the high pressure beds, do I need to lower my time so I don't roast myself?

Oh also... keep the showers lukewarm after tanning, not too cold and not too hot. Also make sure the salon did not change the bulbs and did not tell customers this can cause overexposure and which leads to itching. Rubbing your body with alcohol after you tan will just dry your skin out more.

I would start with something moderate in a High Pressure bed if you haven't used them. At least the first time like 6 or 7 minutes just to see how you tolerate the bed. Becareful with some tanning salons that will advertise their beds as High Pressure and they are not High Pressure. High Pressure beds when the lamps go on will have a purple blue color that is very different than a low or medium pressure bed. Plus the good thing with High pressure beds you go 2-3 times a week for a month you get really dark. For some reason I do not get the itches after using the High pressure beds, well if I'm not using a tingle.

Yep, Muyaha pretty much summed it up ! Also Taylor DO NOT tan in beds with burnt out bulbs not only do they damage your skin they make you more prone to getting skin cancer.
After I found out about that I only used high pressure beds 2 times per week and I was fine.
Now I only do selftanners or Mystic tan. I sure miss those high pressure beds, I might lay in one this weekend for old times sake..

Maybe some kind of sun allergy or something?

for quick relief let me suggest a nice, soothing Aveeno bath soak. But I agree you should go to the dr--could be a reaction to the beds, could be a skin rash, could be a fungus--who knows?

I hope the tests come back okay. I'm really sorry.

Taylor, please see a dermatologist to be sure. It may be just a rash and she will lecture you about tanning beds, but it's better than having problems arise 3 years later.

maybe it's heat rash? I used to get that in the summer after being in the sun too long.

Today the bumps are totally gone. So strange. When I go tomorrow, I'll see about going in the better beds.

um probably either it's the cleaning solution on the bed or it's the lights then most likely.

Ok, so they haven't changed the cleaning solution. He said when things like that take place, they post it in each room. I tried the high pressure bed. I went for seven minutes. About a minute in to it, my back started feeling like there were pins being pricked in to me. So, I flipped over and laid on my chest. Didn't help. This sucks.

here's a heat rash link. Do you use a fan while you're tanning and is it on high?

i think it's dry skin and the heat. I would just over moisturize like 3 or 4x a day with a really good lotion.

yes, it's on high and the other day i used TWO fans, both on high.

Today, I layed out in the sun for about 30 minutes, only about 78 degrees out, and got the rash again.

I don't even feel hot when I'm laying out (indoor or outdoor). This is annoying. It's ugly.

Go to the doctor, Taylor. I am ordering you! If you're having some kind of allergic reaction you need to know what to do, because your reaction can get progressively worse.
