Default 93% of Silicone Implants Rupture

April 6 - In documents made public on Wednesday, health regulators estimated that up to 93 percent of silicone breast implants ruptured within 10 years. The surprisingly high figure will further roil a debate next week about whether to lift the 13-year-old ban on silicone implants for breast enhancement.

I personally would not get the silicon filled but they sure are popular.

Thats one of the reasons I got new cohesive gel filled implants, they can't rupture. Just recently celebrated one year with my new additions and I can't believe how they have settled and become part of me.

They are dubbed "gummy bear" implants because if you cut into one,it has the identical effect as cutting into a gummy bear.I would assume since they cannot leak, they can last a lifetime.

Mermaid, I think the main concern with silicone rupturing is the negative health affects it can have on your body. However, there are conflicting reports on the validity of these concerns, so who knows... (btw, I hope everything is going well with your implants now!)

I really am going to have to check out dr's in my area who have the cohesive gel implants, I would love to learn more!

That's why it is recommended that you replace your implants every 10 years whether you have saline or silicone.

Replacing every ten years, must be a pain in the butt.

I want to get gel(since I heard it's softer then co-gels) more then co's, but scared what that gel can do to my health. I haven't felt anyone with the co's. I want to before I decide on what to get.

The gels can still rupture and even though the silicone is a harder form the body can still break it down and transmit it throughout the body too. Even with the saline your body will break down the shell as well and migrate silicone throughout the body. Its the immune systems natural way of ridding the body of foreign objects. I think women need to do more research before getting implants ( seems so many are uninformed) I did research for years before I got mine then you will have all the facts upon makink a decision to get implants.

If you don't mind me asking...

What type of implants do you have & how long have you had them?

Implants are a personal decision. If it will boost a dancer's self-confidence and earnings, then go for it. But as it says right on the FDA website, implants are not permanent and must come out eventually. So, it's very important to set aside money for the explantation and one month recovery time in an interest-bearing account when the time comes.

Yeah, i think a lot of people are under the impression that implants are as permanent as say a nose job.
My mom has had silicone implants for about 13 or so years(when she got them she only payed $1,800!) and she has not had any visable problems.
However, I am always urging her to have some kind of exam or something just to make sure everything is okay.
She said she does not know what she would do if she had to get them replaced because she can't afford to get them redone.

NO breast implant can truly be considered permanent. When you're talking about saline or liquid silicone or gel silicone or vegetable oil (now banned) filled bag type implants, they all share the facts that the outer implant shell is made of silicone rubber and that the outer implant shell will be moved and folded every day by body movements. After a while, the outer implant shell gets weaker in exactly the same manner as if you take a piece of paper and repeatedly fold it in the same place !

However, the type of filling does have an effect on the rate at which the outer implant shell gets weaker. Saline solution i.e. salt water is very abrasive, such that the presence of salt water at the point of folding increases the rate of weakening. On the other hand, silicone liquid and gel are lubricants, such that the presence of silicone at the point of folding decreases the rate of weakening. Being very physically active and/or using your pec muscles a lot increases the number of times that the outer implant shell is folded, also increasing the rate of weakening.

Putting all of this together, the point where a dancer needs to seriously think about having her implants replaced because of a rising probability of outer implant shell failure is about five to seven years for saline implants and about 10 to 15 years for silicone liquid or gel implants, depending on how physically active she is and how often she dances. For girls who don't give their implants a hard workout on stage every week i.e. moms and housewives, the rule of thumb goes up to 10 years for saline implants and 20 years for silicone implants.

I read on one forum that someone's grandmother died with her silicone implants. They were hard bc she never replaced them, but they were there for 20 something years.
