Default Prominenet GOP Weds Same Sex Partner

    http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/09/po...partner=rssnyt

Arthur J. Finkelstein, a prominent Republican consultant who has directed a series of hard-edged political campaigns to elect conservatives in the United States and Israel over the last 25 years, said Friday that he had married his male partner in a civil ceremony at his home in Massachusetts.

Mr. Finkelstein, 59, who has made a practice of defeating Democrats by trying to demonize them as liberal, said in a brief interview that he had married his partner of 40 years to ensure that the couple had the same benefits available to married heterosexual couples.

The New York Times has no business prying into someone's private life like that. If there is one thing I learned during the Clinton Administration its that what a person does in their private life is nobody's business.

The whole tone of the article is "look what hypocrites these republicans are". However, the facts of the article lead one to an entirely different conclusion. If all these big name republicans have hired this guy, either not knowing or not caring that he is gay, then that is proof that the charges of gay-bashing against the party are lies. Lastly there is no hypocrisy on Mr. Finkelstein's part. Buried almost at the end of the article is this:

Mr. Finkelstein has regularly described himself as a libertarian who supports same-sex marriage and abortion rights while opposing big government. In an interview with Maariv, an Israeli newspaper, after the American elections last year, he criticized the Republican Party as growing too close to evangelical Christians, warning it could cause long-term damage to the party.

The whole thing is an attempt by the NYTs to make republicans look bad at the expense of invading the privacy of a man that has never sought the spotlight.

I have a different take on this than Destiny.

I think this is a positive thing for the GOP. It makes them look just a tad bit less like the party of religious extreemist when one of their own :

regularly described himself as a libertarian who supports same-sex marriage and abortion rights while opposing big government.

That is more of an attitude that that is in many ways old school "republican", IMHO

Odd that there is nothing about this on the website of the Log Cabin Republicans, the national organisation for gay & lesbian Republicans.

I think that when famous Republican "attack dogs" are found to be homosexual - David Brock is another example - it is seen as odd that people whose main advocates are the liberals would attack liberals on a regular and vicious basis.

That said, there are a number of Republicans who have pretty good records of voting in defense of Gay/Lesbian rights: Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Pataki, Congressman Chris Cox from California and Congresswoman Deborah Pryce from Ohio, etc.

I don't think you can accuse the New York Times of prying into this man's "private life", given that a marriage (or similar ceremony) is generally considered a public act. Marriages are newsworthy when either participant is a public figure. This isn't the same as halting the presses whenever the President gets a blowjob.

Politicians never say what they truly believe. They say what they need to say to get elected. This guy's personal life has nothing to do with his public life. The fact that a member of the GOP got married to a partner of the same sex proves absolutely nothing.

I think what's private should stay private....no problem reporting a marriage, but commenting on it???That's a problem

As for Bill C....He can get a blowjob whenever he wants, but getting one IN THE OFFICE and WITH AN INTERN ... that's the pure definition of sexual harrasment and IS a public issue. Same way Tailhook was a public issue, same way all companies have sex harrasment policies and procedurres and many such problems become public news. A PUBLIC FIGURE USING HIS FEDERAL OFFICE IN THAT WAY IS A PUBLIC ISSUE. Next time, hire a fukin escort...then I don't give a rat's ass!

HK: I agree with you, I think its a positive thing for the Republicans as well. Like I said, If all these big shot Republicans hired the guy and didn't care about his sexual orientation, that is a good thing. My objection was with the New York Times, which is known as a very liberal paper prying into the man's private life in order to in their eyes make the Republican's look bad.
