    Default Help--Problem with DJ

I am still (actaully AGAIN) in my horrible slow-ass club in Indianna, as I have not yet managed to find a new gig and I missed the stage.

The rules in the club have recently changed so that now the girls are not supposed to select their own music or make requests, just tell the DJ what KIND of music they want. I am really having a problem with the DJ. He is about 19 years old, interested ONLY in rap/hip-hop, and spectacularly un-creative. He does not know any classic rock, as in, if I tell him, please play me a hair-metal set, he has no idea what to give me. He plays these bizarre sets, one song really fast, one so slow that it has no discernable beat, and so on.

I have permission from the manager to tip (i.e. bribe) him to play what I want, but he just takes the tips and can't even find the music in the MP3 system. I know for a fact that the club has certain songs I have asked for, because I have used them before, but he claims we don't have them.

I have tried to win him over by praise, tipping, begging, asking for his porfessional expertise, and any other thing I can think of, but the basic issue is, he just does not give a damn! He is unprofessional in other ways, too (won't anounce the dancers or call them to the stage, leaves the music on auto-play and then leaves the booth, leaving the same girl up on stage for an eternity, puts one or two dancers on stage all the time, leaving the rest of us sitting around with our thumbs in our ears, and so on...) but I don't forsee him leaving any time soon. I know I am in the wrong damn club, no big surprise there, but until I find another place, how should I handle this?

I have thought of burning my own CD's, one set per CD, and giving him those to play for me. But we have new club rules again (I missed the big meeting last night) and I don't know if this will be alowed.

    Help? Please?

Definitely try to give him your own music. If he doesn't use it, keep pounding stages for a new club!

God knows I have worked with some bad DJs, but this guy is way out there. He doesn't deserve your money...

You know, it's 'Tards like this that make the rest of us look bad. Burn some cd's for him, and if he still screws it up, have him killed.

heres a few suggestions.I dont imply any are fitting, just broad suggestions not ment to offend.

Get your boyfriend to beat him up.

    Just kidding.

Is this the same working relationship that the dj has with alot of the other entertainers??If it is,a discussion with owner or management will fix it as a joint entertainer effort.(or should)

You could work other shifts when that dj isnt working.

    You can swap clubs.

You can fuck him, this works for most anything when dealing with 19 year old jedi dj's.
    Just kidding again,kinda sorta.

When working with different dj's,you can write down the names of the mp3's they use for you and where they are located on the comp.

You can have one of the other dj's explain the "search"feature on almost all pro music programs, its really freekin basic.

You can figure out why this guy is being such an ass.

If you ask for hair 80's,and expect Dog and the Butterfly by heart, and he is thinking barracudda by Heart, you two can comprimise and take into consideration your show, and the tempo of the overall show of which you are both a part of.

Best thing you can do is figure out a way to work with this guy till he isnt part of your show anymore, from the sound of it,that wont be long.

Most of the other dancers dance to the same stuff (rap/hip-hop) that he is interested in, and they use the same few songs over and over again. So he does know thier music pretty well. But he does do all the other stuff to them, like leaving them up on the stage or not putting them up there at all, depending oh how much he likes them. He works ALL the shifts, like 80 hours a week, so I can't avoid him.

I didn't have time to burn CD's for him this weekend, but I made him LISTS of 5 or more songs I would like to hear for each outfit and told him, "I bet there is SOMETHING on this list that you have." That seemed to work really well. I didn't always get my first choice, but at least I didn't get any ugly surprises, either.

Management is talking about more BIG CHANGES (top secret, of course) so I hope things will pick up, as I am sick of auditioning and have about used up all the likely prospects of decent clubs.

I think somebody must have had a talk with him because when I went in to work Saturday, he was very nice and cooperative. I hope this will last.

Maybe the problem has been solved??

    Kewl beans.

I was also going to suggest, after seeing some of your other post on costumes, that you burn a cd for each set and costume, and mark them plain so an ape can read it.before your set, hand him a cd of the music you need.
If the music is in format, nothing he can do but play it.

Its disturbing to hear your club only has one dj working 80 hours a week.Thats way to much for any level performer working in any level of performace.
Just like a dancer,a dj is feeding off addreniline<sp>all night. Its a drug stronger then crack and if overdone,as in many drugs, things tend to crash and burn in the end.

Yes, the manager and the DJ both work way too much, and the DJ also doubles as a bouncer.

I see great minds think alike. I was thinking of burning him a set per CD, also! I have been giving him index cards with my set lists on them, but that is only moderately successful. It worked with the last DJ, because he knew his music a lot better.

SO now here is a new question for you: WHat is some good, simple music editing software? At the moment I have the Windows Media Player that came with my computer, and it will rip & burn, but that is about all. For the moment, I am going to content myself with burning 3 songs on a CD and telling him "here, play this." and if he trims them to two minutes fine, if not, fine. But I can see the day coming (like tomorrow, for example) when I am going to want to trim my own songs, fade one song into another, etc.

    Any suggestions?

    PS, Big Green:

My kid is nuts about the little dancing lady in yur signature. Every time he sees it, he stops whatever he is doing and askes me about a million questions about it. Most recently he wanted to know whether the "spikes" (leg stubble) would hurt her knees!?!?!?
