    Default Popping and cracking?

I noticed something when I was doing squats today. My knees and ankles were cracking and popping; it didnt hurt though. They hardly ever do that when I workout. Why is this happening? Is it bad? I have some small knee problems when my patella moves to the side if I do a funny move on stage or at home. But, I keep that under control.
If anyone has some advice is to what the heck is going on thatd be super!

Sometimes this happens with me. I just keep note if I put on more weight or did something a little different. Hopefully they were just cracking nothing that would cause pain later on.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

Try taking a glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplement. When your joints pop,you are wearing down the cartilage and that will result in arthritis later in life. That supplement takes at least a month to notice the full effect, just like chemical imbalance drugs like prozac.

Usually popping or cracking sounds during squats or similar exercises represent poor joint lubrication. I've read a few articles on it, and I'll post it later if I can find it. When you increase your excercises, or excercise over a prolonged period, naturally your body needs more nutrients. A shortage of lubrication is usually due to insufficient calcium or phosphorous (I think) in your diet. So, take your vitamins and increase your intake of calcium rich and phosphorous rich foods (nuts, eggs, milk, cheese...)

Also, what OTB said. The only down side is that you have to let Glucosamine build up in your system in order for you to feel any noticeable effects. Last time I ran a marathon, I was having a lot of knee problems. Heard about Glucosamine and loaded up. It took about 5 weeks for me to feel any results, but it definitely helped.

.... if it's not bothering though, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Also, along with what OTB and A_Guy said...make sure you check your alignment. Your knees should not be going past your toes during squats and you should have your feet planted firmly on the ground. Do not push up with the balls of your feet, but instead, push up (from a squat) with pressure on the heels, transfering to the soles of your feet (but keeping both feet firmly planted at all times).

I've found that if my alignment is slightly off, it really affects the way that my joints react.

^^^^^ yes. I learned this the hard way a few times, found out also my feet need to be pointing straight ahead as well, and a squat does not have to go down far, i feel it in my ass now when i do it, and that is what i want!

I have this problem too. And when I do one particular pilates excercise my RIGHT KNEE ONLY pops! I started taking glucosamine/chondroitin/msm and it seems to have helped a little but I still get popping and occasional pain. My dad has bad knees and can barely walk now (he's 62) so I worry I'll end up like that if I don't take care of them now. He used to run marathons though and I quit running a few years ago when my knees started to hurt me and now just do walking, pilates, and weights and stuff but I do a lot of squats. They definitely seem to have gotten better but still pop.

It's called rounded cat back. It's where I'm on the machine with my feet towards the back and my back rounded and hands on the bar and I push out. Unless I do it with very limited range my right knee cracks. It only started doing that in the last year or so though.

Hmmmm...I would say to really check the alignment...Make sure that you do not put pressure on the actual knee cap...

That's always gotten the best results on my knees...proper alignment (everything lines up) and keeping as much strain/pressure off of my knees.

    Happy Pilates-ing!

i've also been having some joint issues due to joint abuse via cheerleading for too many years and now dancing, so I've gotten some glucosamine, chondroitin,&msm vitamins that I'm gonna give a go for awhile to see if it helps at all. between my uncle the dr. suggestions and your guys I just had to try it out!

Holy Cow ! I have been cracking and popping since high school ... I guess gymnastics/cheerleading has hurt me more than I thought

I am going to look into starting this supplement ASAP.

What blend should the Glucosamine/Chodroitin/MSM be?
Is the biggest dose per supplement best?

1,500 MG of glucosamine,1,200 MG of chondroitin and 1,000 MG of MSM per daily dosage. This is not one big pill. It's two or three pills a day.

Oh, I thought of something else. For those of you who, like me, are hyper-flexible (double jointed) you will experience popping in some of the joints.

The problem can be that your ligaments are a little too loose and so the joint pops a bit more than normal simply because the ligaments are not keeping the joints in line. The only thing that can be done for them is building up the muscles around that joint and being very aware of how you are moving and what it is causing your body to do.

So, if you are hyper-flexible/double-jointed...the stuff mentioned above will not stop the popping...it'll probably help a little bit, but it won't fix the problem.

My left knee is messed up pretty bad and cracks all the time. I went to a physical therapist a few times and she stressed the alignment stuff and had me do some wall squats (where your back is up against the wall and your knees are at 90 degrees and you hold it). She wanted me to strengthen the muscles around the knee and through the leg to be more balanced so the knee would stay in place. She was sort of helpful...the supplement stuff you guys are talking about sounds good though, I'm going to look into that.
