Default Ladies i need dye help here...Fast.

Really. It's so bad i broke down today and went to a great salon. Anyway he says it will cost $150 to do a temp. on my whole head.

I am losing COLOUR fast. I am to a lighter brown now, with some shades of blonde peeking through. It does not look good, believe me.

HELP. How the hell do you get dark hair to grab and stay on blonde? Do i need to put a darker colour on, one more time and hope it grabs the blonde?

I am not going to that salon, the treatment lasts only about 2 months depending on hair washing he said. I am using Shampoo and conditioner for dark treated hair. I wash twice a week only.

I don't know how to go dark and keep it. I can go blonde again in a snap....But dark is hard for me to keep. It's fading, and an ugly colour. It's almost brown/grey. SO many people love it, that i really want to keep a darker colour on me. I got sooo many compliments from strangers, and not about the hair, but ME! This colour is working...But i am losing it.

    HELP.

This is bad for your hair but I would get a box of dye at the store....darker than the color you have now and re-dye it. Kinda hair murder....but you can deep condition the hell outta it after.
Or you can try doing the pieces you want darker?
By all means I wouldnt wash it at all for the next 5 days if you can.

Pamela, the only way to get dark to hold on blond is to put a tint of red first.. I went black/red wine first, it faded.. then I went dark brown and it stayed.

I use Ferria, sorry don’t remember the actual color code but it worked on my hair.

Another thing you can do is go black so when it fades it will be the color you want but just be careful it has NO BLUE tone.. yuk!!.. so dont get the darkest deepest black, I think they would all go blue on blond.

    Good luck!

I would just cave in and get it done at a salon. Any sort of drastic chage is better handled by the professionals. Sure it's expensive, but I think it's worth it....

Dying your hair at home really isn't all that bad. It's how you take care of your hair afterwards. I've done about 95% of my hair dye jobs at home, and it's perfectly soft and healthy. Keep the ends trimmed, condition, use a proper shampoo and you'll be fine.

Pamela, I suggest going to Target, Walmart, ect and getting some hair dye. I really like Garnier. Keep in mind, that when dying at home the color is often darker then it appears on the box. To keep the color longer, use a shampoo formulated for brunettes, like the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette, or the new Pantene Prove stuff. When your out in the sun, use a spray in conditioner that has sunscreen, because sun will fade your hair really fast.

I agree with Jayln, I would suggest going to the salon. Hopefully you can find a stylist who can work with you on the color and give you the formula to use at home. My stylist did this (to dye my roots blonde) and it has saved me tons of $$$. That way you can do touch ups at home, using the salon formula. If you go to any Sallys, they can match a salon color code for you.

    Best of luck!

    Pam,
Try a cellophane in your hair for a while if you plan on doing it yourself..My stylist suggested that to me after he touched up my hair last week. I have naturally blonde hair and about 2-3 months ago decided to go dark red. The color looked great for about 2 weeks, then out of now where it just went haywire ! I started using shampoo and conditioner made for red hair, that help a bit too. Then my hair turned 3 different shades of red !
Anyway I finally went back to let him touch up my roots and freshen the color. But we ended up going even darker this time. He told be that its very hard to dye blonde hair dark with out bizarre fading happening. He also suggested going to a beauty supply store and picking up a bottle of Jazzing ( its a cellophane) thats close to the color I already have.
This ( he tells me) will keep my hair healthier while keeping my color the way I want it to be.

I hope this makes sense, as I am super tired..

^ Right. It's very hard to dye naturally blonde hair without "weird" things happening. The reason is because blonde hair lacks pigment...and the pigment is what grabs and holds color...so, the lighter the blonde, the harder to dye.

Go get your hair done at the salon...and then shop around. What one place charges $150 for, another may charge 1/2 that. Also, if you go on a regular basis, then the amount of time to "fix" the hair decreases, thus costing less to fix. Touch-ups, I found, are cheaper than fix and re-do's.

Thanks ladies, price does not matter, it's he said i have to go back like every 2 months for another treatment. Shit, if it wont stay brown, i may as well let it fade away. See what my roots look like, as i think i see them now close to the scalp, and they are much lighter tha this hair colour is now. Wow the blonde was soooo much easier to keep, and cheap.

Brown hair rocks! I love it, i wont bleach over it, but perhaps see how much more fade i get, and then take the plunge to a salon *ouch* they wanted to cut my hair. When they both (2 guys) looked at my ends after i said NO, they agreed i have good ends, no splits.

Shit, i don't need/want a trim, we got over that, but i will be there 2 hours almost he said, getting it done, after that they are going to seal it with a glosser.

I may, i feel like just buying a fuckin box of darker brown and seeing if this fills in the holes, grabs takes all that shit.
I loved it at first......Damn me.

A glosser is another word for clear cellophane. It basically will protect your hair and make it shinier.

I am a hairdresser and I think that your hair might of needed to be filled prior to the color to equalize the porosity of your hair. Prelightened hair especially pale shades gets stripped of pigment. Or he might not of put enough on the saturate your hair enough so it didnt grab as it should have.

Very true Redhed..My hair is very thick and long ( not as long as Pam's) and I would always use 3 boxes of dye back when I did my own hair.

Pam, maybe you coulud pay for the salon to do it this time and then see how it fades. If it sticks everywhere and ou don't have patches, then you could start doing the at home thing.

I had my hair dyed black. It faded out to a really great brown. I have had black underneath done several times and that does not fade at all. Probably because the blacks have been layered so much. Anyhow, I would recommend only doing the black all over once and then sticking with browns after that. I dunno.

All I ever learned from my stylists was to leave the color on for one hour. After an hour it loses it' s power, but until then it can keep going.
So I always leave mine on for an hour.

Thanks ladies. I am not to keen of salons, really. But if i need to i will, i promise.

Anyway here is what i was told today. I don't know if these people are "experts" or not, but i called Loreal, because they are the products i use. I told the lady what i had done, and it's been like 2 weeks and i have lots of fade out. She told me to get 2 boxes of a medium dark brown, and 1 box of the red # R6 i think. Mix the red half and half into the 2 brown bottles, toss out the developer that comes with the red dye. Shake the 2 bottles well, and go to it. Leave on 30 minutes only.

I went and looked, did not bite, as i am scared. I just don't have experience with dye. Bleach i am the queen. But this is all new to me being dark.

I may break down in my 3rd week and do it 1 last time. Or shoot for the black, deal with it, and wait for it to fade....Shit, dunno.

MY hair is very very long and i just don't want to lose any length, or damage it.

You're replies mean alot to me.

Great idea to call L'Oreal, I would follow their instructions, they should know what they're doing (it's their product). Keep us posted and I'm wishing you luck!

I had my hair just highligted for years. I decided to do the underneath part darker. The first time she did it it hardly showed and faded a lot. The second time it was really dark and still faded a lot. The third time it was a darker color and has faded some but finally took.

Dying your hair is allot more gentle than bleaching it Pamela. If you're hair hasn't broken off by now, it probably won't!!!

I've been EVERY color under the sun, and, what works best with darker colors, in my experience, is to find a gentle, semi-permanent, non-metallic color I love, and refresh it every 3 weeks or so. Adding color to hair is way less damaging than stripping it away (by bleaching)...

By the way, while we're on the subject of hair-
Pamela, your advice on the care/conditioning of bleached hair has made a world of difference in the condition of my hair.

I found a hair strengthener, and bought it.....not realizing it was for women of color, with mineral oil listed as one of the main ingredients. I was going to return it to the store, but, then I remembered reading your posts about the importance of adding oils back into bleached hair, so I kept it. It took a bit of time to learn how much was too much, but, once I did, I became hooked
My stylist has commented that the breakage I've been plagued with in the past has all but gone away. So, thank you for that

I think you look gorgeous with any color hair- I hope you're able to find a solution to your dilemma !!!

I actually asked the lady who does my hair this same question. Mine would always turn red within a week or so. She said that there is no dye that is truly permanent, they all fade. She also said there is really no difference between the dyes they use and the kind you can buy in a store. I've been using Natural Instincts for the past few months and so far it's my fav. It still fades, but it takes longer and it doesn't fade red.

Awww well you're welcome. See bleached hair i knew ALL the tricks, but the dyed dark hair is new to me, because i only used Clariol temp. that washed out a few years ago.

This is a perm. brand. So i did get another application, mixed half part R6 red with a deep brown...and it TOOK! My hair is a tad dry, not sure why. So i soak it in conditioner at night, pretty much do the same i did with my bleached hair, only with products designed for Dark dyed hair.....And it's working!!!!!

    AGAIN, thank you ALL ladies!!!

    Pamela...
Well the others beat me to the filler advice and you seem to have gotten it to stay so YAY! My advice now if for keeping it dark: try to be careful about the heavy moisture treatments as they can moisturize to the point that the color slides out. I always alternated between (color safe) protein and emollient shampoos.
