Exclamation Counterfeit Bills in the Club?

Another dancer I was working with showed me a couple old style ten dollar bills that did not look the same. One was smaller, the paper felt weird, and had a 1950 mint mark. And one was missing the "in God we trust" motto. (I only had new style ten bills on me so I couldn't compare any more to hers.)
Are there some handy tips for us dancers to check our bills for veracity? One of the other girls commented we'd be easy marks for counterfeiters to pass off fake money since we work in dark bars and are transitory.
A few years ago, I heard about a part-time bank teller/ part-time stripper in Colorado who reported some guys who were trying to pass off hundreds of dollars worth of fake money in her club- she knew from the feel of the money that it wasn't real.

Usually, you can tell by feel. You can also tell by ink smudginess. If all else fails, take the bill up to the bar and have the bartender use the marker on it.

With US money, the size never changed...so there should NOT be a bill that is a little smaller.

The small strip on the left side of the bill is the one sure way it will have the number of the bill on it 10, 20, or 50 plus most clubs have black lights the strip will glow under a black light I have noticed they always have a small black light up at the bar and in the LD area.

I found this article on the marker issue it seems its not so reliable.

that strange black pen that most of us have seen being pulled out of a cash register drawer when we offer a $50 — or larger — bill in a store or restaurant. It's called the "Smart Money Counterfeit Detector Pen," and it's made by DriMark Products, who also make legitimate items that really work. It proudly bears a US patent number. For years now, cashiers across the United States have used this pen to make a mark on a clear portion of a bill, after which they will — usually — accept it. It says right on the pen, that if the mark made on the bill is amber, that bill "passes the test." If it's black, the bill is "suspect."

With the imprimatur of the US Patent Office, and coming from a major manufacturer, we should expect that the thing works — but it does not. You see, according to the patent papers, the inventor assumed that counterfeiters would use cheap paper to print their product — not very likely! Cheap paper contains starch — as "sizing" so that the paper looks brighter and will be more easily handled by printing machines — and starch turns black in contact with iodine, so a pen filled with tincture of iodine should reveal phony money! Yes, that's what's in the pen — iodine!

The U.S. Secret Service has the awesome responsibility, among other things, of protecting us from counterfeit currency. They tell us that there is more bogus money in circulation now, than at any previous period in history. This is something we should all be concerned about, right? I contacted a U.S. Secret Service inspector and asked his official opinion about this device. "Does it work as advertised?" I asked him. "It is not dependable," he responded, after referring to a handy manual. "Not dependable, like, 100 percent not dependable?" I asked. "You might say that," he said. You see, Federal officials never use "yes" or "no" to answer any question professionally. Believe me, counterfeit money was never safer than when being tested by the "Smart Money" pen. And, bear in mind, every really phony bill that this device does not detect, goes right back into circulation! So, what to do? You contact your local Secret Service office and ask for their pamphlet "Know Your Money," which will help you decide for yourself about the authenticity of the currency that passes through your hands. This phony pen will never do it....

i learned this from a shopkeeper who works near my club: look for the watermark of the president on the bill, look for the strip that says how much the bill is, if you cant get into good light, simply scratch lined pattern of the coat on the president- you will feel ridges by running your nail over it vertically. those ridges cannot be reproduced. when i get big bills (100 or 50) for vip, i duck into the ladies room to check em before i head in.

I guess this would be one advantage of working in a "funny money" club, then it's the club getting stuck with the phony bills not the dancers, unless of course when they pay you at the end of the night or week or however it goes, they end up paying them back out to you.

mm: Funny that you posted this. I was thinking the exact same thing at the grocery store yesterday. I'm not really that worried about counterfeits though. Isn't the way most counterfeiters pass their bills is by making a small purchase and pocketing the change?

Or they will use them in places where they intend to spend a lot of cash and they figure it will not be to well scutinized. Strip clubs would be ideal for this.

I guess if some guys knew they could buy say 1000 dollars worth of fake 20's for something like 100 dollars a lot might try it.

I remember reading a while back on a thread on TUSCL that some guy thought it would be pretty easy to make fake "funny money". All you would have to do is keep a little of what you had bought at a club, scan it on your computer and print it out on a photo quality printer on the right kind of paper stock.

Ther are no funny money clubs around where I live, I don't know what clubs do to prevent is sort of thing. Do they just keep some sort of track of how much a guy spends compared to what he bought?

Usually, the funny money has special "serial numbers" on them. Most customers won't know what to look for on them, but the dancers will...along with the bouncers and waitstaff. The "paper" that most funny money is sold on is very hard to find...and even harder to print on (at least the ones from my club are). They are nearly unrip-able...and they are printed on very smooth/silky paper...but the ink won't smudge or run.

If someone wants to attempt scanning/printing funny money, they can go ahead, but if they are caught...they can be charged with defrauding a company/larceny or even grand larceny (depending on how bold they get).

At the end of the day...the fake money will be found. All of the funny money is counted/verified...with the serial numbers compared. You won't have duplicate serial numbers...and if there are...you can bet that would be a "line" straight to the offender.

As per funny money..the only club Ive ever used funny money at marks the money twice... with a dated stamp and another mark daily so its harder to copy.

As per funny "real" money - How about a $100 bill that you hold up to the light and see Lincoln in? Looked and felt real... bleaching real bills is the new way around paper and imprints I guess....

Our funny money has barcodes. A counterfeiter would have to know the specific barcode symbology used, and there are millions of them out there. This might not stop them from giving us the funny money, but each one if on long perforated strips that would be a huge pain to copy..........
