Did anybody electronically file their taxes this year from home? I submitted my return at 4:30 pm yesterday and I still haven't gotten the confirmation that it was received by the IRS. How long does it typically take?

I had to pay a bunch. So I mailed mine and hoped that the post office will take their own sweet time in getting it there.

speaking of the post office I heard on the radio yesterday that the post office was NOT going to be open till midnight to accept last minute tax returns. I don't know if that was local only or nationwide.
At the last minute, I believe that it can take 1-2 days. If you don't hear anything soon, you may want to call (good luck).

I e-filed about ten days ago and got confirmation within 24 hours. I highly recommend it. One thing about e-filing is that it is best to do it a little bit early (by April 10th) in case your return gets rejected. If worse comes to worse, you can always print out the return and send it the old fashioned way.
If you are snail mailing your returns at the last minute, I recommend physically handing it to a USPS window clerk unstamped and having them place a meter strip on it that explicitly says "APR 15" on it. This way you don't have to worry about your return missing its postmark date (or getting the wrong date) when going through cancellation. Certified mail with a return receipt is also a good suggestion if you don't mind paying an extra $4.05 per return.
Its a local thing, but its growing. With more and more people e-filing, the midnight rush to file returns isn't what it once was, so a lot of smaller cities are discontinuing the stay open till midnight thing. Also a lot of the bigger post offices are installing self service Automated Postal Centers which are open for use 24 hours a day. These will eventually make their way down to the smaller offices.Originally Posted by LoveSexMoney

well it still hasn't been confirmed. I didn't realize it would take so long simply because it was the last day. Next year I'll be sure to do it at least a few days earlier.

OK after STILL not getting the confirmation email, I got some wild idea this morning to check my spam inbox. Sure enough, there was my confirmation (received 24 hours after filing I might add.) Just a head's up to those of you who may e-file from home next year.
