    30--40 minutes of cardio?

So I know how great cardio is, and I love doing the elliptical machine and often rotate between that and various speeds on the tredmill (often with weights). My question is that I often read that to get a great ass/thighs you need to do 40 minutes on the eliptical/cardio machine. This is a stupid question, but does that mean 40 minutes straight? The machines at my gym have a 20 minute time limit which I could get around most of the time, but I often will just do it for 20 minutes, and get bored. I'll do the tredmill after that for 30-50 minutes, then go back to the elliptical. I need to lose weight and tone up my thighs and butt, so should I be doing something differently?? is 40 minutes straight really that different from two twenty minute intervals?? I try to do a step or toning class in addition to any normal cardio, but they don't offer them mid-day too often.

BTW, I tried a pilates/yoga class and it was the stupidest thing I've ever done. I thought it was the biggest waste of time. I know a lot of people swear by them, but I don't see how that could do anything positive for your body (except, of course the natural benefits from letting yourself relax). Pilates wasn't THAT bad when I had a video, but I still don't really see how I could get results from it. *sigh* Oh well.

30-40 mins back to back on 2 different machines is fine. You actually don't really want to be going over 45mins at a time anyway.

Training with weights also helps.... and don't forget 80% of it is what you put in your mouth!

And I think you need to visit my site re: the Yoga stuff

Perhaps you just had the wrong teacher (and please don't tell me the only class you tried was at the gym!!!)

Okay I did really good today (or so I thought). 20 minutes warm up walking (followed by 5 minutes of stretch, of course), then 40 minutes of eliptical training (basic intervalish program on basic/easy resistance). Then 20 minutes on the tredmill rotating between walking (2.7-3.1mph) and jogging (4.3-4.7 mph) intervals with a lot more walking than jogging. More stretching, then I did some of the weight machines for my legs and ass. Overall I spent about 3 hours or more in the gym today.

So is this too much?? You mentioned no more than 45 minutes of cardio? That seems strange when they often offer classes that are an hour long. I know should have ate something before I went in (although I drank the perfect amount of water and took some Tonalin), but I feel great now.

I'm reading your site now. I do have to admit that I only took one class once at my gym. It was mostly older people, too, which might have dictated the level of intensity. That picture alone makes me want to give it another try. DAMN girl, if I could look like that I would do Yoga 10 hours a day 7 days/week.

you're probably actually better off than me. I have a history of bingeing. On food, then exercise. I hope that I'll be able to keep this up, but at the same time I look at what I've done in the past and I would welcome just 10 minutes if I did it 5-7 days/week for months on end. *sigh*

    Just a few pointers....

anything more then 1 hour cardio at a time MAX is wasting your time. I would recommend 30-45mins first thing in the morning (3-4 times a week). This gets it out of the way, no putting it off and you will feel uplifted for the rest of the day.

Start at 20 and work your way up if you need to.

Weight train for 45mins-1hour 3 times a week

Like anything though just start where you are and do NOT go overboard and do NOT go too hard to soon otherwise you will just burn out and head back to where you started from.

Never compare yourself to others cos we are all different and we are all beautiful

A site you might want to look at:
    http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/fawnia1.htm

This is the first training program I started on about 8 months ago.

I took some classes at the gym (I go to 24HR) and the yoga one was dumb. The pilaties one was fun but not like woo-hoo. I tried a different yoga intructor and the outcome was that I felt better and the class was challenging enough for me to feel I got something out of it. I urge you to try to different person or go to a studio. Better yet try Bikram yoga that will kick your ass. lol
As for the cardio this is what works for me though: I do 6 days workouts. 3 of those days I do 20min of cardio before my training. Then on my off days I do 30min at my fat burning heart rate. I agree w/ Krys longer than 45min is too much and to me a waste of time. Unless your in a bike class. You might want to try that that is a HUGE bodily challenge.

I just wanted to add: Silicondoll just keep going.....I started by exersize program about 3 weeks ago. Before that I made over my diet (no exersize) for about 3 weeks. Took me forever to get started but make it fun for yourself.
I bought some low fat ice cream bars (130cal and 1.5gm of fat) soooo yummy though. I tell myself I can have one after wards.

hey ladies todays workout was 15 mins woooohooo!! i know it sounds lame but for me to manage 15 mins cardio without my inhaler is an achievement! i found the music i listen to during a workout is the most important motivator. my favourite is a really uplifting trance track to get me going plus closing my eyes and imagining myself with a hot new body (lol)
btw tigersmilk is the ice cream from the skinny cow range?cos i discovered them and with the right flavour u can get them at less than 80 cals

Hmm really?! Im intrigued now. Might give it a try. Ive been eating to Klondike kind in the ice cream sandwhiches. I decided if Im going to want to eat a bunch of junk it might as well be a little healthier.
Good for you on your workout silicondoll!! A little bit at a time can do wonders believe me! But, dont over work yourself. This can be a form of overtraining. So when you workout keep your heart rate in the fat burning rage. Me Im 20 so: take 200-(age) 20= 180 max I do btwn 130-155bpm to keep it regulated. Works alot for me but not for all...interval training can also help burn fat better as well. Either way you go ....any amount of workout is GREAT for you!!! Just keep at it and you WILL see results w/ in 2 weeks thats w/ watching your diet as well. Woo-hoo!!

For those of you who want to ease into increasing cardiovascular exercise, try swimming. The water cools you down so you don't feel overexerted & hot, and the resistance of the water tones your muscles & eases strain on joints.

Krys, can you explain or post some links about the ideal length(s) for cardio workouts? I've never heard that more than 45 minutes was a waste of time because aren't you still burning calories?

All this stuff I am gonna say below is from the "Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle" ebook (which is excellent btw: http://hop.clickbank.net/hop.cgi?trinityhol/burnthefat )

First of all if you want to burn fat you need to do between 30-45 mins a session 3 times a week min (20-30 mins is fine for maintainence) You need to hit over a certain time because it takes about 15-20 mins for your body to stop burning carbs and start burning fat. (But 20mins is still better than nothing!!)

Once you hit 60 mins you tend to reach the point of diminishing returns and run the risk of over training. Your body will also begin to adapt (you will reach a plateau... ) Also excessive cardio breaks down lean muscle mass in the body which actually helps to burn fat!! (read less LMM = less calories burnt when at rest).

Also going harder for a shorter period of time is more beneficial then sitting on the bike going slow reading a book for an hour and a half.....

As I said before, DON"T forget FOOD is 80% of the equation (eating 4-6 small healthy meals a day) and WEIGHT TRAINING or some other form of CROSS TRAINING don't get stuck on cardio, it is not the be all end all of fitness and weightloss.

P.S Also in my own personal exeprience I have noticed that my body does the same thing whether I am doing 60 mins of cardio in the AM 6 times a week or 45 mins of cardio in the AM 4 times a week.

Plus Yoga and weights of course!

I am really bad about doing what I'm "supposed" to do so I got a personal trainer. I'm no where near that pic posted but I'm getting stronger and starting to see muscles I never knew I had.

Now, before my trainer I did have an EXCELLENT pilates instructor. She moved away to California and I was stuck with another studio and different instructors until I got my own machine and not only did the new program I was being taught not really feel like it was doing much for me but it actually made my back HURT. So now I do pilates at home the old way I was taught and have my trainer too. Hopefully I'll get there to look all toned all over instead of Miss Squishy Butt.

Go to a specialized yoga center for your yoga. I do go to gym yoga sometimes, but its only an hour and the instructors are just going through the motions. Try a yoga center that offers different yoga forms, and has a certification program, and has yoga experts come in to do workshops. Your experience is 180 degrees different. Yoga has amazing benefits, especially for a stripper. It really helped me be able to do pole movements and splits. Don't give up on yoga!

Yoga is very detoxing so if you have been drinking, eating the wrong foods or eat to close to a class it will make you feel slightly ill.

Also as the muscle release toxins they can make you feel nausous..... I still get it sometimes after 10 years!! Just breathe through it and it passes, trust me
