    Default healthy snacks at work

I work 9 hour shifts, and usually start to get pretty hungry about half way through. I like to take a 20 minute break, grab something to eat and touch up my make up. Except the only thing at the club is hotdogs, or pizza. Can anyone reccomend something substantial to snack on at work? Something that doesn't need to be refridgerated. We do have a microwave though. I'd like to be able to keep my energy up, but nothing that is going to leave me too full and bloated. Going grocery shopping this week, so if anyone has some suggestions on what to pick up, that would be great.

hmmm, don't have a fridge? well that kills most of my list.

I'll post what I have at home to grab for work snacks anyways. Some might work for you, some not.

hummus - with sliced cukes and tomatoes, whole mushrooms, tortillas or pita for dipping
apple- with peanut butter and/or a block of cheese
    cottage cheese
plain yogurt- with granola or trail mix
hard boiled eggs and black olives

well crap, all my stuff has to be chilled. sorry.

My new favorite healthy snack is soy chips.

They taste like regular chips, only are low fat and high protein.

Maybe you could get some nutrisystem meals. They don't need to be refridgerated.

Turkey bacon Blt's and salads w/ my dressing in a little tupperware container are some of my favs.

Granola!!! In a zip lock bag, mix it with raisins, dried cranberries, and even some dried apricots.

and if you need a chocolate fix, throw in some chocolate chips or chunks

From what I remember from working at a cafeteria, food is still good to eat four hours after its been heated or been in the fridge. As for healthy food, you can do any veggies, or like fresh pineapple which has enough acid content to keep the germs off for a little while more.
Pita bread and peanut butter? Trader Joes has a bunch of really great healthy snacks. Or a frozen meal that's defrosting for the first couple hours and then you nuke it...I've been having some really great health meals that range from 220-420 calories.
But DON'T get the digorno microwaveable pizza. It's totally gross

    Clif Bar Builder's Bars.

They come in chocolate, peanut butter and cookies and cream. 20g of protein, packed with vitamins and under 300 calories.

I like jerky... turkey, beef, and salmon. And those ready packs of tuna.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

Fresh fruit that will not bruise easily (apples, banannas, oranges.) Wash your hands before you sit down to eat, it seems like SCs are so filthy the dirt would leap into the thin air if it could...LOL......
Dried fruit, aged cheese and crackers, smoked salmon. Brush your teeth after that one, though. Some brands of yogurt are sold to be kept and ate at room temperature after being pasteurized.
I fill up with water at work because it kills hunger pangs, and being stone sober keeps you predatory for money...LOL.

Instant oatmeal is one of my staples...I usually have 2 packets mixed w/ water. Tastes soo good and keeps you full b/c is has a good amount of fiber in it.
I used to bring apples all cut up in a baggie. Dried fruit is great but pick the kinds w/ less sugar.
Wheat thins are awesome the low fat kind.
Kashi Go lean bars in Oatmeal cookie..I live off of those sometimes.
Ive been doing The Zone diet instant shake mix..its more of a balanced meal shake w/ a decent amount of protein. I mix it w/ 1% milk and its great for on the way to work so youre not super full when you get there.

I drank alot of water too...everytime I went to the dressing room to freshen up..Id take a gulp of water. It keeps those pangs away. Keep your meals light and small you dont want to feel slugish on stage.

I eat protein bars. I like the low sugar Detour bars. You can get them in a large (350 cals) or small (170 cals) size, which is convenient. I buy the small ones for a quick fix. Thye taste like a candy bar. Yum..

Great suggestions everyone! I will have to try some of them out. I also drink a lot of water with lemon at work. Definitly keeps me feeling more refreshed, and prevents headaches.

I often keep a protein bar or a slim fast bar in my purse if I think I'll have a long day and that usually works for me.

I get those celery and peanut butter packs from Trader Joes but I have a little insulated lunch bag with a frozen insert that I bring so I have *semi-refrigeration*. You can pick those up at Wal-mart or Target and that'll solve the fridge problem.

I carry those and the drained packs of tuna from Starkist. I bring dried fruit and Quaker granola cereal in a baggie to munch on too. Yummy!

I used to take homemade Cous Cous to work. (I'm pascatarian.) It's cheap too.

or a nice Grapefruit. I peel them off by hand(do you?) at work - outer skin and those white skins as well.
It takes a while but it's good to make my hunger calm. I don't smoke cigarette and tempted to nibble "something" all the time..

I've tasted Cous Cous, Honey. Or I think, if it's the same thing. It's got sour cream in it, right? (my boyfriend's African) I liked the first few bites, but it's too rich after that. Or maybe Cous Cous is just the stuff IN the sour cream? Hmmmm....

Edit: Okay, cous cous is the granular "pasta". I've only had it soaked in a sour cream like sauce, and it is too rich for my taste. But I'll have to try it by itself, I bet I would like it. Thanks for the idea.

Hey Lovespell, the one your man cooked(?) sounds very original.(maybe that's the way in his country) I haven't eaten CousCous with Sour Cream, sounds VERY yummy ! (but lots of carolies..you'll need 100 more hard illegal lap dances to burn it! LOL)

Usually CousCous is mixed with Oil/butter to make the taste "rich" but I don't like to washing up oily container(I do recycle) after work I don't use them at all.

    My original recipe is:

    boilled water
    Cous Cous
frozen Green Peas, Corns, Carrot etc - put them in micro to defrost. (maybe some Pranws as well?)
Red Pepper -chopped in dices are nice as well.

Put them together into the pan, cook for 4mins or such. simmler, stir well.

Caynne Pepper or Soy Sauce to seasoning! maybe ordinary salt and pepper.
:Chopped garlic to add if you not taking that to work.

Maybe it's a bit tasteless but hope you enjoy it.
