hey can anyone tell me where are the places that dark skinned girls should definitely not go? are there certain states that ethnic girls will experience more racism?

As a black dancer myself who grew up in Memphis Tennessee, I would avoid Southern states. Florida and the Atlanta metro areas are ok.
You will experience some racism everywhere. You'll have to give it some trial and error.
I currently work bookings in predominately white rural areas like Montana, North and South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota (not Minneapolis) and most of the time I am the only black girl in these small clubs, which generally works to my advantage, but other black dancers also work in various rural clubs in these states.
You get some rednecks and hicks who may walk away from your stage periodically, but also get regular white guys who if you are nice and a good worker may become your followers and regulars.
It is easier to be the only black girl in a club of 5-6 girls, than to work in a big city club where there are 12 black girls out of 40-50 dancers. And many better big city clubs are cautious about the amount of blacks they will hire, where the smaller town clubs aren't as picky, although most won't book more than 1 at the most 2 black dancers in one week. The small town clubs with mostly black dancers spell trouble as those girls are just at the club to line up after hours action and the owners condone it.
To be successful as a black dancer in this white dominated business, a black dancer needs to be totally comfortable being around all white people. A black dancer needs to play the role of Oprah. Oprah is a black woman who is at home with people of all races, and that is her key to success.

I second that Tina, the way you put things, makes it a whole lot clearer on a lot of issues.
P.S. I love your analogies(sp)

My question is why not the south? what about nola as well?

I would imagine that NOLA would be pretty cool for dancers of all ethnicites. But even cities in the South can be pretty back-asswards (I sure as hell wouldn't want to dance in Birmingham, Shreveport, or Vicksburg, black or white).
I heard more racist shit in Memphis than anywhere--crap like white guys asking me why I would dance for a black guy, just really bad stuff that makes a nice liberal girl from Austin's jaw drop. Also in South Carolina. If I were black (or pretty much anything more exotic than, say, Swedish) I would so stay out of Dixie. I think Tina's right that Atlanta, South Florida, which is pretty diverse, is an exception, and so's Texas, at least the metro areas. When you get into cities with big black or hispanic populations, the customer base tends to be a little more open-minded.
On a side note, at the club where I work in Columbus, OH, I have been asked at least once a night, by white guys, if we have any hot AA dancers working--I have seen only two black girls on two separate nights at the club, which makes me wonder if they've had bad experiences there, or if Columbus is just a really white town in general (the clientele is mainly white but with a little of everything).
thanks for the opinions, ladies. btw i am from new orleans and found that i encountered less racism there than i do in los angeles where i dance now. i'm actually mixed and could pass for almost anything - puerto rican, mexican, dominican, black, french, brazilian, etc. i was actually surprised that i did better in nola than in la 'cause i thought that california would be more liberal so thats why i asked for some opinions.

New Orleans has a lot of tourists thus the clubs are not really geared to locals. Plus NO has a HUGE black polulation.
Drive out of the tourist areas or east into Mississippi and it's another world.
As far as LA goes, it is just a tough place period. A lot of hard core people live there, and the mentality of some of the people living there makes them a little rough around the edges.
Phoenix or Tucson is better to dance in, in my opinion.
Steve Cooper who owns the Christie's chain lives in Memphis and is the biggest old bigot alive. He owns some black clubs and says that white girls degrade themselves dancing for blacks. I worked in some of his clubs years ago as one of the few blacks hired.
Another club owner in town would fine the white girls for dancing for black guys, and he would charge black girls more to work than white girls. racism is horrible there.
And like Susan said, go into the smaller towns of Georgia, Alabama or anywhere in Mississippi. Blacks know their place and they better not look at a white woman. Florida is ok except for areas like Gainesville, Ocala, and Pensacola which is damned near in Alabama. The major Florida cities have so many transplants from other parts of the country that you hardly hear any southern accents. Jacksonville may be a little "crackerish" but tolerable.

how's New York for black dancers?
anything for a cookie
I don't know about the outer boroughs but Manhattan clubs, like many others, have a limit on how many black dancers they have working at one time. That being said I've actually had an easier time getting hired at some of the better Manhattan clubs than clubs in NJ. From reading this site I know that's not the case for other black dancers, but that's my story.Originally Posted by dollylocks

NOLA is cool like that.Even though the city has mostly blacks, the tourists come in all races.

wow, 2005 in america and we still have these problems?! so have dark skinned dancers had an easier time in other countries? i heard iceland loves black girls because its so rare there.

As you were saying earlier about that you work in the LA area....LA is a bunch of competition and some places w/ many extras. I think personally it would be hard to work there if a girl didnt have huge boobs and a tiny waist. But, ya know I could be wrong or Ive misunderstood the LA area.
Its probably better $$$ out of CA.

I think that anywhere that is very rural, is a bad area for a black girl to dance.
If you are talking about dancing abroad, there are places where a black girl can bank. Scandinavia (Iceland and Norway in particular) and a lot of middle European countries (Germany, France, etc) are good. Eastern europeans also dig black girls. The only places abroad I would avoid would be southern Europe (brothels for the most part and they dig blondes) and Japan.Originally Posted by siena_b

In countries like Japan, black women bank.

The main thing I would say is to test the waters and not be afraid to fail. Some small town clubs are really good, as well as some city ones. The opposite is true too.
Trial and error is key. Club energy varies from girl to girl. Some clubs you will fit in like a glove with management, a larger amount of girls, and the operating style may be more suitable to you, whereas other clubs aren't as comfortable.
Don't fear an area just because it is rural and all white. One area like that may have guys lining up to spend money on you, and another one might be so so or a hard sell. The same is true in a big city club.
After some trial and error you will find a handful of clubs in various types of areas both urban and rural that are a good fit for you.I would find your niche in the US before experimenting abroad. The cost of traveling like that could prove to be an issue.
I find this VERY hard to believe.Originally Posted by onlythebest

And it's not just me. And it's not just in my club. I've danced abroad before in a few other European countries as well as in the UK, and that pattern has been observed everywhere I've been. I doubt it is different in Japan. Show me a black girl that has banked there and then I might be swayed a little.

From what I've noticed from a lot of the Japanese men who arent from the US, they focus on any girls who arent remotely like what they are used to. I dont get much attention from them beyond the fact that I can KINDA understand what they're saying. I'm pale with dark hair. They see that enough. Hispanic girls... they sometimes get the attention, but blondes, redheads, and black girls get more. It isnt what they're as used to. But this is never set in stone. I've seen Japanese guys who prefer asian women.Originally Posted by Malibu

i agree with malibu. i find japanese people who are not american born very very difficult to dance for. they usually come in groups at my club but usually they are really about the tall tanned blonde.

I know a black girl who worked in Anchorage with me who worked in Japan off and on in the past. She speaks FLUENT Japanese also. She said it was ok money, but maybe her being able to communicate in their language made a difference in connecting with the customers.
As far as "banking" in this business I don't feel any girl will "bank" by just working in a different city or country.
Dancers who make money have the proper look, good selling skills, and are good floor workers who aren't shy about approaching customers.
Also "banking" in this business comes from knowing how to "keep" interested customers around through being in touch with them regularly. Also it is important for a dancer to adapt her communication style to the individual interested customer she is dealing with.
No city is just rolling in dough anymore. Some cities have better opportunities than others. That's all.

I've spent a month in South Carolina in Myrtle Beach at the Masters and I've done as well as any other woman even though I'm black. A blond white woman told me that after she asked how much I was making. She went on to tell me about white dancers who weren't doing as well as me. Tina's right, it's the selling skills that make the difference. I'm not an extras girl or Beyonce look-alike. Also, it's the fact that this is a tourist area with people from around the world and I'm not above bustin' out some French, Italian, or regional American phrases to butter 'em up! PS Tina, thank you so much for encouraging other Black dancers to travel. I was freaked out by the idea at first but it's been a nice vacation from NY\NJ bullshit. Next, Dallas!![]()

Detroit loves black dancers in all clubs.
i've danced mainly in chicago and los angeles. both are only ok for african dancers, just my opinion. i've spoken out many times about this subject since last year. the answers are always the same. do a search on this site for blacks or african dancers to see more info.
i did dance in St Thomas last year and didn't do that great, but that's because the club had mostly extras dancers and the owner had escorts working there as well.
could you tell me how or who will book daners abroad, i'm from canada and been trying to find an agent who books in these places. i'm mix race, and want to try overseas.
