Default So I got a Lil Mynx pole....

and HOLY SHIT is it hard to even climb the damn thing! I was huffing and puffying like a fat lady in aerobics class after a couple tries. Not to mention I wasn't very graceful at all. I think I've found a new way to get some good excercise at home. And y'all that can hang upside down and stuff must be strong as hell. I tried that with my boyfriend holding me upside down and he could only let go for a second. I think I need to get one of the DVD's that tells you how to do stuff and maybe that will help...to a point! Lordy! And to think I saw a girl the other night hang upside down and then FALL and catch herself so it looked like she landed on her head. I have more respect for her now than I did then!

I have one of their poles also, and yeah pole tricks are really hard. I've had mine for about 2 months now and I still can't do anything even remotely impressive.

At least it's not just me! And now I have a lovely scrape on my left leg and a splitting headache.

The thing you need to do is develop some upper body strength. If you stand facing the pole and put your hands on the pole and you jump up and hold yourself...lower yourself down. After you can do that, then you slowly pull yourself up and lower yourself.

Do pushups (handstand push ups are good), bicep curls, tricep extentions, and flys. (this is in addition to any other workout you do).

If you do those everyday, you should notice a big difference week by week.

    Have fun!

BTW...Sheila Kelley's S Factor book shows "strengthening" exercises to begin pole work...it also shows basic beginning moves for the pole. Her pole work 101 video is ok, too...very basic, very beginner...it should be fine for you.

Yea when I just got my new pole it was hell I thought i was never gonna be able to do anything, but eventually you will and it'll feel great to actually be able to do something on the pole. I remember when i was little playing on the monkey bars(i think thats what theya re called.) it was so damn easy that when i was getting my pole i was like oh piece of cake, YEA RIGHT it takes practice not only on the pole but like Venus said you need to develop some upper body strength. Good luck and enjoy your new pole.

Well, I've been building strength but it's definitely not enough yet! And just yesterday I was asking my trainer if he thought I could do a full pull up yet and he said not quite. I'm definitely getting stronger in the upper body but I have more to go for this! I'm might try the pole work 101 video in the mean time. and yeah, I was thinking about climbing monkey bars as a kid too and thinking oh yeah, this can't be THAT hard! And BAM it is HARD!

You have to develop your upper body in order to do any type of pole tricks. Start by doing weight training and push ups. You will build muscle faster if you cut out all refined sugar in your diet and keep your diet clean.

You will not learn tricks overnight.. It took me a year to learn anything that involved climbing, hanging upside down etc.

Get the book "S FACTOR" by Sheila Kelly- this is the only book I have found thus far that breaks down pole tricks step by step. The video is also awesome. I wish I had had this book back in the early 90's when I began dancing!!!

I have a lil mynx pole. I love mine. I am retired, but I run and I incorporate pole work into my daily exercise routine.

And I was so proud of my little arm muslces I'm getting. I'm going to look like the hulk by the time I can lift myself up on this thing!

Your personal trainer said that you were not strong enough to do a pull up? So, you don't even try?

IMHO, you should go to the assisted pull up machine...and do 10 reps. You'll be able to use some weight to help you up there...but don't NOT do something because you are not "strong" enough for it. The best way to gain strength is by doing something repeatedly that you have trouble doing. There is really no other way to train your muscles to do pull ups without doing pull ups. It requires firing up a lot more than just the pec and bicep muslces. Go do assisted pull ups and make your goal to knock x amount of weight off the assistance each week.

Well, I've done pull ups on that pull up machine that puts you on an angle and you lay on your belly (is that the assisted pull up machine???) and I've done it with my feet on the ground. I happened to ask him while I was doing a totally different excercise and saw a guy doing pull ups. I think I'm doing a lot of things that will get me strong enough eventually to pull myself up but he was just saying I'm not there yet to where I can pull up all of my body weight.

The machine you were on is not an assisted pull up machine. If you are not pulling up your own body weight, it's not a pull up. The machine I'm talking about looks like a pull up bar with a small cushion for your knees (or your feet...varies). You actually pull yourself up like a real pull up...as you get stronger, you remove more and more weight until you are doing pull ups unassisted.

I think personally starting out to do basic spins on the pole will get your shoulders and your back strong enough to move on to climbing then on to going up side down. Honestly I think that polework is using your muscles completely different than if you were to do a push up or pull up. starting basic spins will get your muscles ready for using them in that different way that polework uses them.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

Pole work isn't just about having strong arms, you also need strong hands too to grip the pole. When I first started learning pole work, I started learning simple spins. Something as simple as walking around the pole, gripping the pole high above the head, then hooking the knee around the pole and spinning (in a kneeling position, with your side facing the pole) works out your hands. After my first session, I found that not only were my arm muscles sore, but the muscles in my hands too. As my hands became stronger holding the pole wasn't such a huge effort. Takes time.

Yeah- spinning poles can be a lot of fun for just doing stuff at standing up height--grabbing on, swinging the leg and then spinning around. Good practice for handling vertigo too : )
You might also want to practice with knee or thigh high boots on--it grips pretty well and alleviates some of the hard parts of pulling yourself up. Good luck and have fun--I'm jealous you got a pole. I want one too!

I've learned a little more since I first posted this. I'll try to take some pics.

Just keep practicing your arm exercises. It can be an ass, but your stage performance will improve because of it. Naturally, I have really skinny and dare I say, weak arms, and I can tell you now that they are very shapely and stronger because of the exercises I do. These exercises are assisted chin dip, lateral pulldown, compound row and bicep curl. All of these help me a lot. Use lighter weights and perform many reps (3 sets of 10 reps might be a good start) to increase tone and strength.

I do not dance so often (maybe three times per week or per fortnight), so these exercises help me maintain my arm strength for pole work and it means that I can climb the pole more effortlessly now. You might also want to think about working the core muscles of your stomach because you also use these a lot for suspension moves as you progress. If you hang upside down on or backwards from the pole, you need these muscles to help pull you up. It will also help when you learn more complicated moves whilst suspended from the pole.

Good luck and enjoy your new purchase!
