    Default Help!

    Sooo.. Yesterday we got knocked offline and our phone got knocked offline too, simply because we added more premium channels to our cable. Since it's all connected, anytime service is done on one thing, the others go all screwy. We finally got the phone back up last night, but it was too late to call for the internet and have them reset it.

    Well, I'm sitting there bored last night without my internet and decided to wipe out my harddrive and do a system restore on it, so I could just add things in whenever I wanted them. I backed all of my software and files up on discs. Anyhoo.. The harddrive got wiped out okay, but then I noticed that the System Restore stopped. It came up with some error "Cannot find Ghost.ess". So I take the disc out and see that it's got a HUGE scratch on it. After trying to smooth it over by cleaning and rubbing it with one of those cool cloth thingies, it still won't work. But hey, my Internet's back up! (yay!)

    I have my Windows XP disc and figured I'd just install that and all would be well again. BUT... A little bit into the installation, it asks for a previous Windows disc, which I do not have. Everything was all on-board the computer when I got it.

    Right now I have to use my Hubby's computer, which I hate. He's got an optical mouse that I can never get the hang of. And I WANT MY COMPUTER BACK! LOL

    Is there any other way to install XP without it asking for a previous disc? I'm going to see if my Hubby has a Dell Restore disc at his work, but for now I just want to see if there's anything else I can do, in case he doesn't have one.

    Help?

    Thanks Slutty, but that's totally not what I did. I reformatted by using the disc. Now, I have no operating system at all, just a nice black screen saying to insert the correct disc.

    I've kept trying the reformat disc, but it still gets stuck right in that same spot.

    Reformatting=Bad (Bad, Rhi, Bad!)

    Did you buy this new? If so, they should've given you everything you need on CD. I don't quite understand the "previous disk" part....even if you're using an upgrade CD, it shouldn't actually ask for the CD.

    I guess what I'm saying is - are you sure??

    Woot! I'm back up and running, thanks to my "Hoface" (The Best Friend). I gave him a call earlier and he changed into his Supergeek costume and flew on over with a Win XP Pro disk. He gave me a nice clean system now! He installed everything else that I needed and smacked me around a bit for doing the restore in the first place. Heh. Gotta love him.

    Mojo.. Apparently, the XP disk that I have wouldn't give me the option of installing a clean version of it. It wanted a version already installed that it could upgrade. I don't have the Win 98 disk (98 SE was originally installed on this PC), because everything was already loaded on here. Everything that I needed, including the XP was on the System Restore disks, that didn't work. So long story short, XP wouldn't install without a previous version of Windows.

    I'm all hooked up now though, and I'm so happy! Now I know why he gets paid $125 an hour to do this stuff... He's good!

    Ahhhhh okay. That does make sense. I don't think I've ever actually done an "upgrade" installation. I never trust them....and I don't like being asked for old CD's

    By the way - regarding your scratched CD...sometimes a little pledge on the back of any CD and then wiping it off will take care of those issues.

    Yeah.. I didn't realize it was an upgrade CD. I was given to me way back when I had Win98 so I just installed it without a problem and didn't notice.

    I tried the pledge thing too.. Unfortunately the Disk (Disc?) is toast. The second one has no scratches on it whatsoever, but the first one (the absolutely necessary one) is scratched all to hell and would only run up to a certain point and then crap out.

    Ah well. The Best Friend made me promise that I would never do anything like that again without calling his ass first. Glad the crisis is over.
