    Default Question For Swimmers

I mostly swim for exercise. So I have overdeveloped neck and shoulder muscles. I got a massage a couple weeks ago and the masseuse made a point to mention I "had something going on" in my neck. Not sure what this means in masseuse- speak. The only thing my neck does is creak, no popping or soreness.
Swimmers: have you run across this before? Did the masseuse just feel overdeveloped muscles, or could there be something wrong that I'm not feeling?

I feel you on that. She probably meant knots. My shoulders, traps, and back are full of them. I have knots in my traps that feel like bones. The trainer's can't get them out. They're easy to get in the neck and traps because it's easy to use those muscles the wrong way (to overcompensate for failure of the bigger muscles). Get a tube of Biofreeze or FlexAll and rub your neck and shoulders down after a hot shower, or have your SO do it for you. It won't cure your problem, but will probably help. You don't want to wind up like myself about 2 months ago (frozen neck for 3 days).

I have the same problem! I was a competitive swimmer for about 12 years and my shoulders are totally knotted up. Sucks but they don't always hurt.

Me too! Make sure to use long slow strokes, and extend your arms fully. Also, try to keep your face in the water as long as possible, instead of turning it left and right constantly for freestyle, or up and down during breastroke. All of that turning of your neck is causing the tension. Swim a bit slower and work on holding breath and that form for a little while.

    Good luck!
