My brother, a true power geek, said it might be spyware. Have you tried Spybot or Adaware? I have another one called Hijack this but it takes a little more expertise on what to allow it to remove.

    Hi,

I've been in IT for many years now, and I've seen this same problem many times with McAfee - for some reason it gets "hosed up" and hogs the cpu. Sometimes uninstalling and re-installing it will make it behave again, at times I've had to manually delete any leftover files before re-installing it. I'd give that a shot, if you have the install CD or downloaded install files.

UNINSTALL THAT PIECE OF SHIT MCAFEE. DO IT NOW!

Go and install Avast! which is free, more effective, truly auto-updating and has a very low system resource utilization rate.

That's the right answer. Never use Microsoft software if it is remotely practical to avoid doing so.

    CJ - use http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ (FireFox)

Currently, malware programs are not widely written to pass through this browser. They'll get there...and until they do, it's well recommended over IE.

You will periodically find that some sites don't run well with FF, but for the most part you'll be fine. When in trouble, go ahead and switch to IE...but only when you must.
