Default Louisiana school punishes student for saying “gay”

In November, Marcus McLaurin, 7, was punished at school for saying the word “gay,” according to disciplinary documents sent home with him.
According to the documents and McLaurin’s mother, Sharon Huff, he was sent to a special behavioral clinic and made to write sentences saying he would not use the word “gay” again.
Huff said, on the day of the incident, the assistant principal at her son’s school called and told her Marcus was in trouble.
According to Huff, assistant principal Nicholas Thomas said he did not feel comfortable discussing what Marcus said at school, but he would send the information home with Marcus.
When she read Marcus’ behavioral reports, Huff said she asked Marcus what bad word he had said. He then told his mother that his teacher had told him “gay” is a bad word.
Dec. 1, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Network sent a letter to administrators at Ernest Gallet Elementary School in Lafayette, La., demanding they expunge McLaurin’s records and allow him to talk about his family at school.
At a special meeting, the board voted to stand behind administrators’ decision to punish McLaurin and to keep the incident in his records.
Huff said she is still trying to decide whether to allow Lambda Legal Defense and Education network to file suit against the school on her behalf or keep her son out of the fierce legal battle that would likely result.

I've been trying hard to think of something to say for 10 minutes, but there are certain levels of lunacy which make it difficult to come up with a meaningful response, so you'll just have to settle for this instead.

But gay means happy! Don't Louisiana school districts want their students to be happy?

The article doesn't say enough about why he got in trouble. I can see this being a result of what some would say is over-liberalism or ignorant jackassery.

He might have gotten in trouble for calling someone "gay" in a deragatory fashion, as is all too common in schoolyard tiffs. In which case the conservatives will jump all over this as "yet another way the liberals are fucking everything up, trying to take away our rights to our own language because they want to grant special rights to a tiny group." In which case, I, being a crazy hippie bleeding heart liberal, would like to tell the conservatives to fuck off, and would be in agreement with the boy getting in trouble.

On the other hand, he could have gotten in trouble because he's not allowed to say "gay" because gays are so stigmatized in his community. Did he bring up gays during a class discussion of sexual relations or committed relationships? And got in trouble for it? In which case, I, still the tree-hugging activist feminist liberal, would like to tell the conservatives to fuck off, and would be in complete disagreement with the boy getting in trouble.

So I don't really know what to say about this whole situation. Not enough info to know.

Oh wait, just reread a little slower, and realized, apparently, that he was talking about his family, which must be non-traditional? So that's option #2. Fuck the conservatives.

I agree Cali. Fuck em !

If a person is against gays and gay rights, on any level, in my opinion they are just an asshole .

I hope this boys record gets cleared. It's messed up for him to be punished in this or any manner for saying the word gay.

This story is a great example of what Bush and most of his supporters want for this country.

Actually,I think its what the majority of the country wants, proven by vote.

How can we call it a democrocy if a very small percentage of americans can dictate to the country how things are going to be?

Im sorry you feel this way TL,alot of people can protect the deffinition of marriage and NOT be against the homosexual community.

    Gay rights is bullshit!!
Gays get the same rights as I do,no more no less.
How can anyone think they deserve special rights just because they have sex with someone of the same sex??

Gays are afforded more protections though...

    Example.

Im walking thru the park one night, side by side with my gay friend.
    Just chillin like a villian.

A gang pops up,beats the crap outta us both.

The gang is charged for a hate crime for beating up my friend, but only catches a mugging charge for beating the crap outta me.

Is the gay guy worth more then the straight guy??

Really? But wouldn't the gay friend have to prove the incident was motivated by hate, not just intent to rob? If you two were together, the story could be corroborated toward or against the hate crime, right?

    100% correct.

The problem is,depending on what part of the country and what judge for the trial,a lawyer can corroborate either way and win.

What if the guy who got beat up admits to NOT being gay,can the gang still be charged with a hate crime because they THOUGHT the two guys in the park were a couple?

I just find it odd that a criminal should beat up the white, straight guy, because beating up a minority homosexual can bring worse penalties at sentencing.

I think the strides the homosexual community have made over the years are being tainted by the radicals and thier attempts to force feed thier beliefs unto people who just dont agree with thier lifestyle, that flies in the face of most of the worlds religion.IE Christians,Muslims,Jewish,Hindu, etc.

Please understand,i have no problem with the homosexual community,or the people i know who are in it,I just dont think its means you deserve anything more then me because of it.

And many females were named "GAY" in days gone bye.

I think the word has evolved into a label now.

I did a search for Gay JR High and couldnt find it,I wanted to see if the school is still named that or if its been changed.

Huh ? who is TL ? whatever, anyway BigGreen you are entitled to your opinion on gay rights but alot of people would disagree with you.

I am sure that this webistes homosexuals are just thrilled to see you call their struggle bullshit.

As fot getting the same rights that simply isn't true in many places across the country. I noticed that has been pointed out in detail to you before though yet you still refuse to acknowledge it even though it is a fact.

As for special rights, many would say that married heterosexualare the ones getting special rights.

PS - don't expect any responce if you reply to this as you are now going on my ignore list because I don't care to read comments by homophobes such as yourself.

I could care less who some one is sleeping with,if its legal under our current laws.Doesnt mean you get special rights under the laws,or can change the laws without the voice of the people.

Just cause your gay dont make ya special, sorry, your in the same boat as me and get the same list of rules and regulations.

Funny what is called a fact.
Maybe if one person using 20 different names says it enough times,it might just turn into a fact,at least in thier mind/s.
    Doesnt make it true.
    Im a white male.
A gay white male has the same rules and "rights"as i do,under law.
A black gay man has the same rights under the same law.
a black straight guy has the same rights as lil ole me and has to abide by the same rules and regulations.

Show me one case where a gay man isnt equal to me when it comes to "rights".

crimes are "hate crimes" when committed against them and only "crimes" when committed on me.Thats one in thier favor.

    <<yawn>>
    Im not a homophobe.
I think all men are equal.
You dont get extra cause your gay.

BG, it was changed when I was there to--hee hee--Minnie B. Gay (the name of the woman who donated the land it was built on) Memorial Junior High. It is now called Memorial. By the way, you will notice the mascot is the Raiders. So we were the Gay Raiders. Can you imagine why they wanted to change the name in the 80s?

    Big Green,

That's kind of simplifying it. For the record, I don't believe in "hate crimes", but according to law, your friend would have to prove that he was the target of violence for nor reason other than that he was gay in order for it to be considered a hate crime.

Also, gay rights does not mean "special rights". If gays were allowed to marry or otherwise already received the same treatment as straight people, they would not need fight for gay rights.

    In other news: http://www.kltv.com/Global/story.asp?S=3257984

Constitutional change would ban gay marriage

AUSTIN Same-sex couples in Texas would be banned from marriage under a constitutional amendment approved by the state House today.

The measure -- sponsored by Pampa Republican Warren Chisum -- aims to stem possible court challenges to an existing Texas law making same-sex marriages illegal. It passed with a vote of 101-to-29, more than the 100 needed for approval of a constitutional amendment.

The measure still must win approval in the Senate and from Texas voters to become part of the state constitution. The smattering of Democrats who opposed the measure said it would constitutionalize discrimination.Gay and lesbian rights advocates criticized both measures.

The same-sex marriage ban is HJR 6.

This is why people are fighting FOR gay rights and AGAINST rampant, blatant discrimination.

    And your point is?
Reading the article carefully gives the distinct impression he was punished not for calling someone gay but probably for openly discussing some gay person(s) close to him. Generally the Lambda Defense Fund is not going to come to the aid of homophobes or gay taunters.

I agree that this child is being punished for nothing.

I also agree that this type of thing is the goal of the anti gay/equal rights for homosexuals crowd and what they want to see happening..... By punishing a small child they create an example of what can or will happen to those who do not buy into their gay hate.

They only way to stop these hateful people is to fight back everytime they do things like this.... I wonder if there is a legal defense fund for this kid ? If so, I would like to donate.

    I dunno??

I think we should get a legal defense fund for the school to change its name back to GAY.I would donate.

Before i donate though,I would like to see a vote from the kids who attend the school.
Does the football team still want to be called the Gay Raiders??
Does the girl on the vollyball team still want to be the Gay raiders at the next tourny?
When the captain of the chess team is filling out his collage entry papers, are people on the other end going "GAY RAIDER"???

I can see the bowl game intros now....

    And introducing....
at quarterback for the OKLAHOMA SOONERS....
    a former Gay Raider...

    And the crowd goes wild.

I agree, the kid is paying for the sins of the adults and he is just a pawn in an ongoing battle.

BG's scenario is not as far out as some seem to think. I heard of a case where these "hate-crime" laws were applied to a mugging in a parking lot near some gay bars. The theory was that the mugger assumed that the guy was gay and therefore it was a "hate-crime". I'm opposed to all "hate-crime" laws because it punishes people based on their thoughts, not their actions. Do we really want to live a society where the government can punish you based on what you are thinking?
