In November, Marcus McLaurin, 7, was punished at school for saying the word “gay,” according to disciplinary documents sent home with him.
According to the documents and McLaurin’s mother, Sharon Huff, he was sent to a special behavioral clinic and made to write sentences saying he would not use the word “gay” again.
Huff said, on the day of the incident, the assistant principal at her son’s school called and told her Marcus was in trouble.
According to Huff, assistant principal Nicholas Thomas said he did not feel comfortable discussing what Marcus said at school, but he would send the information home with Marcus.
When she read Marcus’ behavioral reports, Huff said she asked Marcus what bad word he had said. He then told his mother that his teacher had told him “gay” is a bad word.
Dec. 1, Lambda Legal Defense and Education Network sent a letter to administrators at Ernest Gallet Elementary School in Lafayette, La., demanding they expunge McLaurin’s records and allow him to talk about his family at school.
At a special meeting, the board voted to stand behind administrators’ decision to punish McLaurin and to keep the incident in his records.
Huff said she is still trying to decide whether to allow Lambda Legal Defense and Education network to file suit against the school on her behalf or keep her son out of the fierce legal battle that would likely result.
