Default law requires free credit reports to Midwesterners

As of March 1, 2005 Midwestern consumers are able to receive their credit report free of charge. Consumers can request free credit reports from credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifacts, and TransUnion) once every 12 months. Your bank will happily give you a free credit report as well.

I have NEVER been able to get my credit report from Trans Union. They have a "bureau block" on me and you CANNOT get a HUMAN BEING on the phone to save your life to get help with it when you call them. I got a report from truecredit.com but from what I understand it's a FAKO and not real FICO score so it's not accurate. I HATE Trans Union.

Why do you have a bureau block on you? Was your information involved in some kind of indentity theft? If you cannot get your information from TransUnion, then anyone running your credit shouldn't be able to either. Of course, it is against the law for a credit reporting agency to deny someone their credit report. If you were involved with identity theft...they may put precautionary marks on your record (to not send out any information until more information is verified).

There's got to be another way to get this information. It's extremely important to a consumer...hmmmm...let me get back to you...

Bunny, if you are having problems with TransUnion, you can still get your free report from the other 2 companies (experion and equifacts) I got 2 credit reports from the website above and they both had similar information but one was just a tad bit more detailed.

I'm pretty sure the reason I have a bureau block is because my wallet was stolen a couple years ago and on the advice of my mom I called the credit bureaus to report it so no one would steal my identity. I have gotten my other two reports through myfico.com and from what I understand myfico.com is an accurate fico score. I have tried calling Trans Union and haven't written a letter because quite frankly I was soooo peeved just trying for hours and hours being given number after number to call and only once getting a human being who was clueless that I just gave up. I actually went through trans union's automated thing on the phone where you pay for your report and they debited the money from my checking account just fine right away but I NEVER got the report. I had to dispute it with my bank and they put the money back but I never did get the report. I guess if no one can get this report either it really doesn't matter but I don't want to go in to buy a car or a house in a couple of years and be in for a shock.

NJ residents can get a free one yearly from the three agencies too.

I got a lesson on how important it is to look at your credit report. I got mine last year (after not getting one for 5yrs) and the TransUnion one had a lot incorrect information. I disputed all the incorrect stuff, which they fixed. But then they changed a loan, which I hadn't disputed and had paid off a year early to the unsatisfactory category. It looked like I defaulted on it. I wrote back and forth to them several times with proof it was paid, but they wouldn't change it back. I called the original lender who said they were reporting it as paid. After getting getting nowhere fast, I filed a complaint with the FTC. It took 5 months but my credit report is fixed.

I just go to my bank for a credit report. It's free and doesn't count against you.
