What is yur idea of GLAMOROUS?

Well, aside from the costume/theme sets, I have decided that my "every-day" look is going to be movie-star glamorous. Most of the young girls I work with go for a range from Brittany Spears to extra-extra-slutty, or else lots of bright neons. Of the ladies my age, one is still doing the school girl thing, one does vintage-looking lingerie, and one is extra-slutty (it really looks like trailer trash on her). I want to stand out as appealing to the middle-aged guys, and work my age to my advantage. On a practical note, I want to start building my wardrobe NOW for that glorious day when I will be working in a bigger, nicer, gown-type club.

My question to all of you is . . . . what makes a dancer just scream "GLAMOROUS, CLASSY, AND SOPHISTICATED?"

I am asking for suggestions not only for clothes, makeup, and accessories, but also attitude and presentation.

Thanks to everybody for all your help. I love you all!

Whoa, I was almost ready to write a dissertation on glamour, but to keep things simple:
Perfect hair (up-do, or well-groomed long, with accessories)
    manicure, preferably French
VERY dramatic eye makeup (fake eyelashes, irridescent shadow, liquid liner, arched brows)
powdered matte face, or shimmer powder, depending on other makeup
    Dark lipstick
Clothes- burnout velvet (has patterns/ see-through sections on panels) sequins, silks, rhinestones......Invest in a dressing-gown with maribou cuffs and collar, eyecatching!
I'm 100 percent behind you. I've noticed upper-class customers appreciate good presentation, and classy demeanor.

Glamourous, Classy and sophisticated in the 00s? Good, well groomed hair and nails and GREAT eyebrows. A certain cleekness that comes from good lines. Understatement. My club is actuslly getting turned into a gown club in the next few weeks so I've been busy copying lovely understated dresses fitting the above description. I'm all about the red dress (though a longer version) that number 6 wears in Battlestar galactica http://www.calgarysun.com/htdocs/photos/91512.jpg (don't laugh... It's sexy).

Grooming grooming grooming.. no roots, well applied makeup (especially foundation) no garish porn makeup. No chipped nails (hands or toes). My opinion

For me, some of it is accessories... I have one particular outfit that makes me feel classy, but only with accessories. I have a light blue velvet minidress, which by itself is ok, but when I add long white gloves, white thigh highs, and a pearl necklace I feel like a princess.

i think its the way you think of yourself, if you feel classy, elegant, gorgous,,,strut it...Get some Vanity Fair magazines and look at how the girls express themselves...Look at what they wear, how they sit and stand, "To be something, you have to beleive you are it" Remember the minute(small) things add the finishing touch....A women that is trailer trash does not stand with confidence, poise, lovely facial expression....How would a slutty look girl hold a cigaret, and how would a movie star hold one....Oh, study Maryland Monro(spelt name wrong) Do you see were i'm getting with this...hope it help...Best Luck

It's partly in the outfit and accessories (gowns, jewelry, lingerie), partly in the grooming (styled hair and makeup) and partly in the details (no spots or holes, no shoes held on with garters, no messed-up nail polish).

Id say its best to look expensive than looking cheap. avoiding the usual costumes and outfits and finding stuff online or buying nothing at the in house stores (all crap anyway) is also good to building a good wardrobe that will be very glamorous and sexy.

If you want examples of glamour look at gewn stefani, natalie portman and paris hilton as they all have different styles of glamour.

You are classy, intelligent, witty, and confident. I don't know what to suggest except to start with a simple sexy black dress, dramatic eyes, beautiful lips, and elegant hair.

Great question Colleen! Glamour and sophistication are sadly becoming a thing of the past. You're right, there are alot of girls who think that trashy, caked on makeup, and a neon dress are sexy LOL they couldn't be more WRONG from the truth.

IMO being glamourous is more mental, and then visual. I mean, anyone can put on a stunning gown and get dolled out in best hair, nails, makeup but have a S**** attitude. Yea, you will catch alot of guys, and gals attention for the moment, but as soon as you open that mouth of yours you are going DOWN lol...

Another opinion of mine on the subject of sophistication and glamour is the way you dance. I mean really who finds a girl on stage with her legs spread wide open for the whole club to see as being classy...or shi dare I say SOPHISTICATED..No one that's who!

Get a more deeper look at the type of person you want to project Colleen, then find the clothes to match her persona.

    Hope this helps,
    CK

Love this thread. It's given me lots of ideas. I second sticking with colors like black, and red. Long satin gloves. Diamond stud earrings, and bracelets. Think velvet and satin. Marilyn Monroe is a great role model for glamour, as is Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Veronica Lake. Grooming is a must. Perfectly groomed brows, pedicured toes. I actually think you should leave the nails on your hands bare, because they chip easy and chipped polish looks very very tacky. Just brush on clear polish, and take excellent care of your cuticles.

Victorias Secret has a TON of stuff that i consider Glamorous. I would def say dramatic eye makeup (Like pammy over on the left) with a pretty medium to dark lipstick, diamonds (false of course) I usually stick with colors like Black, white, red, baby blue, maroon, anything dark, although I'm sure you could incorporate so lighter colors and still look glam. Go to Macs website (MacCosmetics.com) they have the whole Viva Glam thing going on and Pammy is there and they have some really beautiful makeup on her, plus they show makeup instructions of different ways to apply different colors and stuff

See, whereas I would say it's more slutty than glam. Lingerie under a gown is glam, lingerie on its own is slutty. Which is totally not a bad thing, because that's hot, too.

Glam to me is old Hollywood style- long gowns, gloves, stockings and garter belt with a rhinestone or pearl choker. A feather or fur boa is always a nice touch too.

This is actually my typical look for work. If you need a visual check out the movie "Gypsy" with Natalie Wood.

I'll give you an example of *behavior* for class/sophisticated... or the "what no to do" dept...

My Boyfriend, best friend and myself went to the Men's Club here in Reno... After forever (and actually having to spread our money on the table... the two girls - me and Jen - at the table seemed to make us lepers or something) this beautiful girl in a lovely white gown, perfect hair and makeup... totally glamourous chick... comes to our table. Cool, right?

So we invite her to sit with us she PLOPS down, sits all swung back in her chair, POPs her gum and starts regaling us with how she just got out of JAIL that morning... peppering the story with copious expletives!!! Oh god! She then stands up when the next song starts, pushes my boyfriend back in his chair (My best *girl* friend was the one who wanted the dance but this dancer never asked) gives him the crappiest air dance I've ever seen in my life while POPPING HER GUM then looks at me, hold her hand out for her $20 and leaves without a goodbye.

The antithesis of class, glamour and sophistication. But man did she look the part until her language and behavior gave her away.

Oh, man, that cracks me up! I hope you can use that in a movie or something. What a stupid girl. Behavior has a lot to do with it. Let's start a list of things "classy" girls don't do:

    1. Talk about jail.

Sexy and classy upon looking... yes, but her attitude does nothing for me.
