Default What did you have when you quit?

I feel like in about a year my dancing career may be coming to an end..... (well I would like to think so). When I started out I always had it in my head that I didn't want to come out of the industry empty handed.

So far I have spent a few years traveling, worked about 7 months of the year the last 3 years and recently completed some studies (all paid off now!)

I am still in the traveling process but am returning home in a few months unsure if I will get into the industry again when I return. I don't have a large amount of money saved, or a deposit for a house which was my original "that would be nice aim". I do have plans to open a business though.

Guess I am kinda thinking out loud here..... But for those of you no longer in the industry (or those who quit and then returned...) what did you have when you stopped? How did you know it was time to stop??

when i first quit ( and moved to aussie to start a new life....ended up dancing again anyways, but learnt a different "way" and path to a new life anyways, but thru dancing) i had :
    my cat.
    my bf.
a one way ticket to brisbane
    whatever clothes i had
a bank account in overdraft by 1K
a credit card bill owing 3K.

i learnt the ways of selling, and that dancing isnt a whorish job,got my mind around things and sorted my shit out.

now if i left, id have :
    my boobies
    same partner
bank account in positive ( not much tho)
    credit card on $0
    no other credit owed
a laptop, some turntables, video camera, etc
a shit load of travel ie thialand 3 times, and japan.
most importantly, ive got knowledge, and i grew in ways i never expected

im thinking its time to quit again soon.i never got that house deposit i should have made a year ago either. but at the end of the day, goals are just goals, something to strive for, and if you dont achieve them as you expected, theres a reason, maybe you achieved something else instead, or maybe that goal changed momentarily?

why dont you have a extended break, see how that goes before jumping in and deciding to quit?

do dancers ever really quit?! heh

The first time I quit, 1993- I had a home, a car, two years of school under my belt, a small savings account and household furnishings.. nothing really fancy, but just a nice living room set and a mediocre bedroom set...

When I went back this last time, all of my money went towards finalizing my divorce... he literally got just about all of my money and I worked my ass off, my original intention of going back this last time (and I was 32 at the time) was to take care of the combined debt we had, so that I could move foward with my life.. instead, he turned it into an ugly child custody battle, and took about 12K and because Idaho is a community property state, there was nothing I could really do about it.

This summer I am going back part time, but only because I want to replace my car. I figure that in three months at two weekends a month, I should be able to trade my car in, and put down a large down payment on something I want.

Anyone who is looking at retiring soon, or is young in this business.. invest in an education- you do need one. Read Paris' post about retirement, someone posted to her thread and hit the nail on the head- "a degree shows that you are capable of learning something"... very very true.

boobs, car, boyfriend (met at the club), no debt, improved social and sales skills, the propensity to "knock 'em dead", a year and a half of school (finishing now), and surprisingly enough, my sanity.

I knew it was time for me to quit because I was just soooooooo tired of it all. I can't even describe the tiredness...I felt like I was stagnating, not growing. Time to go. I haven't danced in like 9 months now.

    All I want is a:
car that is pretty much paid off in 4 years (I only want to dance for about 4 years)
    boobies
    and a large savings account.

I think Mermaidz is right..you an always take an extra long break and go back. You can always add a weekend here or there but you dont have to go 3-4 days a week like regular.

Thanks for all the inspring and insightful comments so far, I love you ladies!!

I guess a break sounds good.... but once I start the Biz dancing probably isn't the best "professional" thing I could do. A stripping Yoga instructor would get round a small town pretty fast!!! LOL

Still plenty of time for that though. I guess just gotta keep focusing where I am and see what happens.

When I quit a year ago, I had saved enough money to support myself (car, gifts, dates, rent, school, and all) for an entire semester and part of a summer. Which was part of the goal, as that was a crazy semester, school wise. Had just enough. Tried a few other jobs, started missing it, and now I'm back.

    A pair of Zeiss binoculars.
A Nikon spotting scope and Bogen tripod.
    A couple thousand books.
    A few hundred CDs.
Some really nice size-4 designer suits.
    Some All-Clad cookware.
Lots of Lancome and Chanel cosmetics. (that shit is expensive.)
A few bottles of very good wine.

    Hard-to-explain intangible/non-material things that I won't list here.

    Not a whole helluvalot else.

I really didn't dance for long, mostly because i started to feel completely and utterly alone. No one in my regular life could relate, and I didn't get a long with anyone I worked with, When I left I left with nothing, and I really wasn't that upset. i work for a cell phone company now, not makin nearly as mch, but I'm happy where I'm at. (When I quit it was actually quite amusing, although I'm sure everyone else hated me that much more......I worked days where I was at, and lemme tell you, it was SLOWWWW. I usually only made about 100-200. One day when it was super slow and I was sooooo sick of everything and I couldn't take it anymore I just sat in the dressing room and said I was sick for awhile, and finally at the right moment (when everyone was outta the dressing room) I grabbed all my crap, slammed my clothes on OVER my oufit and BOOKED it out te back door.) I didn't care what they said or thought. I'd never see ANY of them again. I was literally euphoric when I was driving home because I knew I was free.
