    Default Airport Security Screening?

I get flagged for screening because of having gone through Customs before. My kid brother gets flagged too, which I think is because we share a last name. And then, it's a "Middle Eastern" sounding name (Sephardic Jewish, actually).
So....is this a typical case of how Airport Security is picking people out for screening? Only posting because I feel bad my baby bro is getting treated like he did something wrong because his sister went through Customs with a wad of cash and stripper shoes.....

I get pulled aside for searches every time I go through airport security. For some reason they seem to think that I'm smuggling two bombs in my bra or something ! Actually, this has turned into a huge pain in the ___ for me whenever I travel by air. Be that as it may ...

My understanding of the security list is that any number of statistical criteria can cause the reservation computers to puke up particular passenger names for extra security screening. The middle eastern name certainly ups the chances. So do particular flight destination patterns, particularly buying one way tickets or 'jumping off' at an intermediate stop on a promo low fare ticket and hopping on a local commuter flight to a different final destination instead of the second leg of the promo low fare itinerary (which I frequently used to do to save a ton of money). I'm told that ticketing agents can also flag particular passengers who simply strike them the wrong way when they appear at the ticket counter for boarding passes.

I also know for a fact that once you manage to get on the extra security screening list of names you have one hell of a time ever getting off it.

Its true if you have a middle eastern sounding name your more likely to get stopped. There was a news documentary a couple months back about this being true.

People are never happy. When Irish Grandma gets stopped on her way through and Semitic Joe does not, there's e-mails flying because, after all, every terrorist has been generally Semitic, right? (Well, let's not count people like the redheaded McVeigh or the Columbine boys.)

However, when Semitic-looking people get selectively pulled over, it's profiling and violation of civil rights.

This isn't a criticism of the original post - and actually, I have some agreement with both views, but I'm resigned to air traffic being a bit more of a hassle post-9/11. C'est la vie. It happens in other arenas, too. Try being Hispanic-looking, driving north on I-5 through the checkpoint between San Diego and LA. Have your ID ready. And this has been going on for the last few decades.
