    Default Nail Technician

I am seriously considering doing this, and going to school for it this summer, if classes are offered. Im pretty sure I can get up enough money for it, but my question is..when you go to work in a salon, do you have to buy your own drills and nail stuff (acrylic powder, stuff like that), or is it provided? Let me know if anyone knows..By the way, our computer is up and running, and Im back on SW!

Depends on the salon RD. You will either be paying booth rent, or commission. Depending on if you have your own clientele coming in often or not, you will need to decide which method is best for you. If you are on booth rent then 9x outta 10 you will be responsible for your own supplies. Reason being is that they are YOUR clients, and all the money you make you KEEP! But in the case of you being on commission, then the actual salon is bringing you the clients so naturally they will supply you with your instruments and products.

    Hope this helps!

I figured it could go either way, I just wasnt sure about it. I am figuring most places are commission? Reason being, most places Ive been to to get nails done, there are all these people switching places and not really caring where you sit, and everyone uses the things that are at the table. I donno though, but I would really like to get into this sort of thing. I would figure youd make good money either way

Most of those places are usually family ran...like Vietnamese are the majority in the nail care business in my neck of the woods. Shop around. When you get in school, get in good with your instructor. She will be able to guide you in the right direction.

When I was going to cosmotology school we had to buy all our supplies, including nail polishes, files, clippers, etc. but that was in school dont' know how a salon would work though, I dropped out of beauty school. I'm a beauty school drop out.

Yea, my mom was a cosmetology instructer when I was younger. I would sit in her classroom and watch her as she teaches. You will need your own supplies, that way you can have some pride in what you put into it ya know. Blood sweat, and tears as they say.

Like I said, you can still get financial aid, just make sure you talk to the administration.

My mother in law paid for my full tuition last week, and its a 4 month program. There are job openings everywhere here, and Im very good at nail art, not to toot my own horn though. The teacher at the cosmetology school said I would build clientel very quickly doing the nail art I can. And I paid for a kit, included in my tuition, and it has all supplies I need, but you use the schools' while you are at school.

For nail tech, I donno. My school is really hard up for Nail Technician teachers, and I asked what their pay was, and its only like $8 an hour. But being an actual nail technician, you can make really good money.

There was just an ad in the paper for nail tech teachers here in Tucson but the pay was only 25-27K + bonuses. I guess you can always work as a tech on the side too.

Yea, I think I would rather work as a nail tech as opposed to a teacher. My mother in law took my handpainted nail art designs to work with her today, and her friends are going to pay me to do their nails this Friday. Everyone is telling me my work is awesome. I wish I had a scanner to scan some pics, but maybe I can take some with my camera and post them on here.

I got info from a school. It's about 1800.00 & supplies. There's a nail supply store that said a lot of people go there. What about the strong fumes, tho,?

Ive seen those nailjet things, but damn, I wouldnt want to use one. Sure, itd be more convenient, but I would pass on that. Whirler: I wouldnt worry about the fumes. I guess Im a little strange, because I love the smell of a nail salon. Plus you are in a more open area, and during the summer they leave the doors open, you have the fans going, ect ect. Good luck on your school if you go though
