Maybe this should be in the newbie section, but some of this may have relevance to experienced dancers as well, so I shall rely on the forbearance of my fellow moderators...
Do not, under any circumstances, send a guy to tell the DJ what you want, unless he already knows him, and you cannot possibly go yourself. I have only had this happen a few times (like 3 tops), but every time it happens, I like it less, and next time I might make a point to correct it.
The one who did that tonight was a brand new and very nervous girl, who actually was a sweetheart, so I understand why now--but it is easy for a DJ to take offense and view this as disrespect, especially if the guy is an idiot and regardless of his intent. She actually did very well later--I sent her out with the same dancer as I will tell you about next at the end of the night. I had to go into the dressing room and talk her into it, she was so scared--but she is a natural, so she will do very well. It was kind of sweet to see her doing so well when she was so shy.
Do not exclaim "I can't dance to this shit!" when your song starts, even if only one other person but the DJ can hear it. I had a veteran (but not very professional) dancer do this to me tonight, when the jury-rigged DVD player came on instead of the CD I had put in--which was what she wanted. Since there are no rules at this club, and she has a rep for not tipping, I told her exactly what the situation was while I corrected the problem, which made her look pretty stupid.
Do not dance for a guy and expect him to pay you later--one of the very charming Polish cousins did this tonight for a couple of young Daytona stud-boys, and got ripped for two dances. She has been dancing for a while, so she should know better, but I have seen a lot of dancers do this.
Do not give up on the night when there are still two hours left. A dancer did this tonight but I convinced her to go onstage though she had made nothing, and usually stays off the stage, and she did so well that she tipped me twice the mandatory. The music helped, of course.
