Sad A pesty ad-ware program. Help appreciated in killing it.

I go to a fairly nice free ... *GASP* ... porn link site. http://www.uh-oh.com/main.php Although I think some bigger porn company has recently bought it, it is still nice. It has had its problems and it knows it. In fact, due to a suggestion from little old me, you can now report these problems via a little link next to each listing. They have picture and video snippets. I run Mozilla Firefox so most of the problems (such as spyware and viruses) that some of the links try to load on your computer don't on mine. Oh, and if you want to use this link site, I would strongly recommend not viewing it with Internet Explorer and get Mozilla Firefox before doing so. Anyway...

Firefox has been doing a good job, but lately there has been a program on my computer that sends me to a porn link site when I click on some of the "non-asian" video links. It is a pesty program. Not only does it take you to this same site over and over, but where normally a new window pops up when you click a link, it replaces the Uh-Oh video link page as well. Oddly, it only does this on "non-asian" video links and if I right-click a link and this program tries to overtake the program, it only overtakes the window the right-clicking opens up and if I close that and right-click the same Uh-Oh link, the link that it should have opened then opens.

I have Ad-Aware and SpyBot. Neither seems to have found and killed the program. My anti-virus program doesn't nail it either. Nor does deleting all my cookies do it either. Anyone know what I'm dealing with, how to rip it out of my system, and what measure (if any) I can take with FireFox to prevent it from getting into my computer again? The answer to any of those three parts would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Go to the microsoft website. My computer guy told me the name of it, but I cant remember it, so I went to ask.com and then typed in Microsoft AntiSpyware. It works really well for me, but I dont know how it would stand up against those porn sites. I know it also helps to have a firewall hooked up to your computer. Try that and see if it helps.

PP, try doing an online scan at
See if that will get rid of it for you. It's usually very good and will find spyware and all that other crap, as well as viruses. So I think that could help.

If you know anything about manually editing your registry, I can give you instructions on how to find the key that was put there by whatever this program is, and tell you how to delete it. But, if you're not familiar with going into the registry, I don't recommend that you try.

That's all I got. Wish I could help more. I'm sure other Members will have some good advice. CO? Where are ya?

Oh.. Since Amber brought it up... I have too. It's my new favorite spyware/adware stopper. I don't even have Spybot or Ad-Aware installed on my PC anymore. When my best friend got my computer back up and running for me after my reformat, he put the program on and did not allow me to put anything else on. He said it's literally the only program I'll need aside from my Virus program (Avast).

I can say that since it's been installed (over a week now), I have had NOTHING on my computer in the way of Spyware/Adware, or even other nasties like Viruses. When I was using Ad-Aware and Spybot together, they would be finding a few every day on my PC. This has found absolutely nothing that isn't supposed to be there.

That's my recommendation now, even if you're wary of Muckrosoft programs. I was to begin with, but this kicks ass.

Killed the link just in case someone clicked on it by accident or otherwise. It's just safer. The addy's still up, so copy and paste it if you want to visit the site.

PP, what do you use for your AV program? (Please say !) It's really good at killing anything that's not supposed to be on your PC too.

I've got friends that are programmers and such so if you give me the instructions, I'll ask one of them to do it for me.

    I appreciate the help.

I've used the site for years and this is a recent development. While the link site could have put such on it, I really doubt it. I believe it was loaded by some link off of it ... or some site elsewhere.

When I finally figure out what's been going on, I'll email the site and report it.

*sigh* Yeah, that's probably the prudent thing to do. I wasn't meaning anyone to get anything. I just thought if I didn't include the link, the techno people here would be asking "Well, what's the link to the site?!" so they can go and look ... run their devious programs of destructions and give an answer.

PP, what do you use for your AV program? (Please say Avast!) It's really good at killing anything that's not supposed to be on your PC too.
    Yes, I have Avant!

It's alright about the link hon.. I just figured it was best to remove it and leave the addy up for reference. Sometimes even I go clicking away without realizing what I'm clicking on, so I didn't want anyone to get a little surprise (both with the Spyware, and with the adult site.. in case people have little ones running around)

Yay for Avast! It's the best, and I feel better knowing that you have it.. LOL

    Rhiannon,

I just talked to one of my computer friends and if you would post the instructions you mentioned earlier, he'll carry them out for me.

Ok.. Do you have a file name for the dialer? Check in your Add/Remove programs to see if there's something there that shouldn't be. You'll need the file name.. So if you can locate the file on your system, right-click on it, and then select "Properties". From there it should say the location and the file name.

Let me know what you find. If you can't turn anything up, we'll look deeper.

Sometimes the Spyware and Adware is kind enough to be located in the Add/Remove programs. Sometimes it's not. They like to hide themselves.

Go to Webroot and download the free trial of SpySweeper 3.5. It's the most effective single spyware removal and active protection tool available, bar none.

Once you've purged, start using Firefox.

A friend who is a computer analyst looked over the site. He called up the source code and ran some experiments. His take on it is that there is no spyware or adware that is causing my problem but that the site itself does the redirect for the "non-asian" video links. He said if he turned off java script that the links worked fine. He showed me (with java on) how he cleared the cookies, clicked on any non-asian video link, the different cookies that were loaded, and how it was the site that was doing it and not some spyware or adware.

I would appreciate a second opinion on this. If this is the case, my opinion of Uh-Oh will be quite low. I will confront them on this, but I will not expect any change since my friend said it is clearly intentional. Personally, I believe this problem started to take place about the time when I think it might have been bought by a porn company. However, before I confront them, I would appreciate it if someone can second my friend's opinion or contradict it. Thank you.
