    Default Brass vs. Stainless Steel?

Okay, I searched for previous threads, but I could never find a good thread on the subject. I'm building a pole in my home, and everyone says that stainless steel is much more slippery than brass. But since stainless steel is cheaper (and the only material available for the removable poles at platinum stages and lil mynx), I wanted to know just HOW slippery. It's gotta be something you can get used to, right? Or is there something I can coat it with that'll make it slippery/grippy like brass? So many options, and my brain is frizzled!

I dont know that there is anything you can put on poles to make them not slippery. I imagine it would be damn near impossible to hold on to though. BTW, lilmynx sells poles that arent stainless steel that rotate. I got one of the colored ones that are colored. Easy enough to hold on to. They are removeable also.

Steel is much more slippery if you have Oily/sweaty palms. Brass seems to ignore it all and you can get a better grip. If you are going to get steel, make sure you buy some DriGrip. It really helps in polework.

*raises hand*. All the f'in time. Drives me insane!

Depends what you want it for...if you want to learn grip-based pole moves (as opposed to momentum-based), you'll want to invest in brass. Or if you want to learn how to climb/hang without relying on vinyl boots etc.

But best to get the same type that your club has! No use learning things on a grippy pole if you'll be using a slippy pole at work.

I have a couple things I can do, though only at my old place I lived or when there are no customers around.

One club I worked in a few years ago that was really slow when I started had a stainless steel pole. This club was and still is a tax write-off so they were cheap. At the beginning of the night there were sometimes no customers so I would show the new girls how to do tricks.

One of these tricks involves flipping upside down and since I didn't know about stainless steel I slid right down the fucking thing and actually hit my head on the stage, which pissed me off but didn't hurt too much. The other one is a bit different and easy to do on any kind of pole, even street signs, so itwasn't a problem.

I found that by being aware of the difference and making damned sure I had a good grip I could do everything that I could with brass, just a bit more carefully.

What follows is technical so if you do not want toread skip down. The difference is rust.

Rust is the oxidation of the surface of the pole. The green on brass is oxidation. Stainless has tighter chemical bonds and resists rust better. Brass has looser chemical bonds so it "rusts" more easily. Both can be coated with a sealant which prevents the surface from being exposed to air. It also makes the surface rougher at the microscopic level.

Each pole will have its own characteristics depending on age, usage, exposure to perspiration (salty water, etc.), and coating. Stainless is more likely to be slippery but other aspects can offset this. Check the brakes before you drive the car!!

You could buy chrome. Brass should not make you turn green unless it has a cheap finish.

Whatever you do, DO NOY BUY STAINLESS STEEL! If you are a pole-trix sort of girl, you will fall right off it! That stuff is not good quality and in the longer term you will regret it.
