    Default Favorite Charity

OK, I am starting my new company and I want to give something back in the form of philanthropy, so I am looking for suggestions of good causes.

I have choosen the Houston Area Women's Center as one - they deal with all violence against women's issues (domestic, rape, harrassment, etc.).

I am looking for one more charity or organization.

The company is almost entirely female so I am trying to think of another cause that directly supports US.

Any one have any suggestions or favorites?

    Animal charities,animal charities,animal charities.

    Did I mention,animal charities???

I love animals. They are so helpless and count on us for care, love and help.

    ummm both good ideas

Houston does has several good animal groups and rescue groups and everyone loves animals

I personally support Planned Parenthood, but it gets a bunch of bad press here in Texas so I probably can't do that without a bunch of political BS involved.

Gotcha...you could also support a Child Support program. A place where kids can go that is safe...after school...something like that.

Animal groups are great supports, as well. Ummmm...places that raise money for breast cancer, childhood diseases (St. Judes), and places like Make-A-Wish type foundations are also very good choices.

LOL...Make-A-Wish foundations are good. A lot of these kids' parents spend so much time and money on their child's illness, that they cannot, sometimes, afford to give the child what he/she really wants. It can be wonderfully rewarding to be able to support a cause that helps bring happiness into a dark journey.

OK, I think I can tie this all in. My company will offer (amongst other things) personal assistant and home organizing services to clients - many men 25-50 y.o.

I was thinking that there should be opportunities to collect donated items from these guys when they are purging their bachelor pads to make them more chick friendly.

I find that people are much happier about getting rid of clutter when they know it is going somewhere.

We can collect clothes, old cell phones, tons of sports stuff, old computers, etc. and both the women's shelter and the boys and girls clubs should be able to use the stuff. On top of that I would like to have a couple of fund raisers - nothing big, but paired up with promotions.

What do you all think? I have been working non-stop to get this biz rolling for a week and a half now and I can't tell what is a good idea anymore!

I always support organizations that do more than "intervene" but that can really give children confidence and a sense of self. The Boys and Girls club really supports the person and not just the situation. I think any of those organizations would be a wonderful choice.

All great! I Do alot with PETA, but that will be of no help actually, they have their own thing going.

I thought what about a shelter, safe haven for mothers and their children, with volunteers looking after them, (of course major screening.) many people would love to help keep women and their children safe from a bf, or husband while teaching the women skills for the work place, and how to be a major part of society again!!!

Also a big brother/sister charity is GREAT!!!

Lotsa luck, Of course there are many more that have to deal with the many disease areas we face every day as well.

Planned Parenthood gets bad press in Texas? That's news to me. I thought the bad press was the stuff about the skyrocketing teen pregnancy and STD rates in areas where they're teaching abstinence-only sex ed! But I completely understand how they could be a controversial choice for a business to align itself with. I think you're right on track with women and children's charities.

By the way, your company sounds really interesting! Good luck to you.

What about "The Dept. For Children and Families (DCF) you can also get an inside look by becoming a volunteer for as long as you want! You get to meet and talk (evaluate) the parents for the courts, you get to go to court with the family and person you are working under!!!! There's alot to be done with DCF. As they adore the people who help them, because they have to place children, and make major decisions...If the parents (usually Mother) has done her part in society, and can get her child/children back.

    thanks for all the ideas

Pamela, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is on my list, too. They are advocates for children in the courts and do a ton of good

Susan, last year, a Girl Scout group in Texas presented the President of Planned Parenthood with a "woman of the year" type of award.

I thought it was great, but then there was an organized statewide boycott of girl scout cookies, I kid you not.

It was crazy and sad. Even if you don't agree, why punish the little girls selling cookies???
