    Default Scam?

I was going through the mail yesterday and I (my bf actually) received a bill from a collection agency wanting $140 for an unpaid balance from MCI. In the 3 years I've been with him I have NEVER seen anything from MCI before. He says he might have had MCI when he was married (over 8 years ago) but isn't sure.
Is this one of those scams where they just expect you to send in a check or does this warrant some checking into?
I've gotten the bogus "you subsciption to [whatever magazine you don't have] is up" letters before, but never collection agency stuff.

If you guys never had MCI,I would just toss it away. Also, get a shredder at Office Max or someplace like that so you can throw sensitive information away without the paranoia of someone stealing it.

Contact MCI first, to find-out if the bill might be legitimate.

Bills for "accounts past due" sent by email are usually fraudulant. Bills sent by postal mail are a different story. He may have had an account with MCI and the company found unpaid balances in their records.

Check it out first, just to be certain.

    I shread everything.

Even the unimportant stuff. I figure the more "noise" in the shreddings the better.

Well you know they are supposed to be getting bought out, maybe they are just trying to get whatever money they can from folks until the deal gets settled

Anyway, I think you should get your credit report. Currently the midwest is free. But we are all intitled to one free one yearly. So check that out..if it is not on the CREDIT REPORT then I would just call MCI and tell them to get their facts straight.

I've heard of old payed off debts being sold to collection agencies. Those usually don't send letter but call and have the automated voice telling you to call a certain number then they want your social and phone number and all that.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

This very well may be a case of mistaken identity or something. They reccomend you check your credit report once a year to make sure there is no false or incorrect info. So make sure
