Former President Clinton announces initiative to combat childhood obesity

    By KAREN MATTHEWS
    Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK -- Former President Bill Clinton and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee joined with the American Heart Association on Tuesday in announcing a campaign to fight soaring rates of childhood obesity that they said could doom youngsters to heart disease, diabetes and shortened lifespans.

"The truth is that children born today could become part of the first generation in American history to live shorter lives than their parents because so many are eating too much of the wrong things and not exercising enough," Clinton said.

    Well, lets see...

Skateboard - nah - illegal in many areas (skatingboarding is not a crime!)

Bicycling - maybe a little bit but everywhere is pretty far

Ball playing - if you can get some field time inbetween the paying customers (leagues)

Street Hockey - oh please. Maybe in the north, but not anywhere else!

Rollerblading - like skateboarding, only if you want to be talking with the police regularily

Youth Center - only in the inner city - and if out in the burbs, you need to pay for it and it is filled with arcade machines anyhow

Swimming? - not many kids close enough to the shores without getting mom and dad involved. Municipal pools closed long ago....

I wonder why kids are fat today?

Must be transfatty acids... or is it they are simply under house arrest?

You know what really kills me how alot of kids play the video games like basketball/hockey/football etc, but ask them if they have ever REALLY PLAYED...they will just look off into space like this Well at least my brother does. I think that it's really sad.

I realize that alot of parents are busy with work, and sometimes school, but I really wish that they could find some sort of time to have some extracurricular activities with their kids.

Oh well..life is but a dream

I have a younger brother and sister, twins. Their day is as follows: They are home schooled so they wake up around 9 or 10am. Do school work for 2-3 hrs. Then till around 10pm they are either on the phone, watching tv, computer, playing video games. If they go out it's to shop, go to the movies, or to friend's house. Then when their friends come over they do the same thing. I always try to get them outside doing something when I'm over there. I tried to bring them to the beach once and all I got was ugly faces wondering why we are there and when we are leaving. Then on top of it all they eat is junk. I ask my mom why she allows them to act and eat the way she does and she says it's a battle she doesn't want to get into.
When I was young I remember I had to wait to go outside then had to be home when the street lights turned on. Then Mcdonalds was a special trip like once every month.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

Girl, your bro/sis sound like my brother who is 13yrs. Anyways I just had to add that yea going to Mcdonalds was a special trip for us too. It wasn't every other day, shi not even once a week. More like once a month, or longer than that.

When I was a kid, I was involved in sports, cheerleading, afterschool clubs. But with the budget cuts that are going on throughout the nation in these public and private schools the lack of funding is horrible. At some suburban schools, they charge their students like $100 per sport/student that they wanna play for that season, and like $75 for each other sport thereafter during the school year! In Ohio nowadays you gotta "pay to play"

My parents made us play at least one sport. While I didn't appreciate it then, I think that was a good rule now. Not only is it good exercise, but it teaches you to work with other people. Of course, like you say, lots of families can't afford that now days.

Interesting thought- with things like "Supersize Me!" scaring people away from McDonald's, the comeback of ephedra, and now this, will American culture be all "Diet" this and "Light" that like several years back?
Part of the problem is that the cost of living in America neccessitates a 2 income home, so there's no one home all day to plan and prepare fresh meals.....not like back in the day.
Produce has gotten so expensive, and I live in a region where a lot of it is produced...scary! Keep in mind that a lot of money is made off of convincing people that eating processed food is the "easier, better" way to live.

Now the problem with adults is that they are the ones eating Wendys, Mcdonalds, Arbys, etc, super size it, then have the dam nerve to order a Diet Coke Then come home and pop a TV dinner in the microwave for kids.

I dont think it's more so a problem because there are now 2 parents working, but the fact that it's more convient. I mean I know plenty of men/women who have alot of time when they get home to cook a nice meal...but uhhhh that would take time outta watching Desperate Housewives. See that, it's like a mental balance. Hmmm cook dinner which will take me 45 min or miss my show...Nah can't miss this week this is gonna be a good one . LOL

Not only that, but shi do you know how much it COSTS to cook a healthy meal vs. Hamburger Helper?!!!! You do the math..

Yeah, it is cheaper to cook from scratch. It seems kinda sad a lot of people are proud they don't have cooking skills, like, "I'm LIBERATED from kitchen work!"

My daughter is only 2 1/2, but I do my best to make sure that she's playing most of her day. Outside when the weather is nice (in the summer, I'll even let her take a nap outside while I read) in the winter, I'll let her watch TV, but I really try to limit her TV time.

When I was little, my parents wouldn't let my brother and me watch much TV. It sucked at the time, but looking back...it was really good. And, most likely how I'll raise my own daughter (children).

That's how it was for me growing up. My sister and I were only allowed so much TV time per day, so we had to carefully select the shows we watched. Believe it or not, our mom (former schoolteacher) even went so far as to make us read books.

This is one of my big pet peeves. I have a friend who by the way went from 120lbs to 220lbs (she swears she's only 180 yeah right) I went out for lunch with her, she proceeded to order two double chesseburgers with extra chesse, large fries, an ice cream, a chicken sandwich for later, then a large diet coke. I asked her why the diet coke, this hefer told me because drinking regular coke is bad for you, like the other thousand calorie sandwiches are not going to do anything to her.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.
