Default Yoga good for back problems?

I'm asking here because I know if I asked a yoga instructor, I'd be told, "Of course!" Has anyone used yoga to strengthen a bad back? My lower back is becoming a problem now.

I do it to help with back stuff, mainly lower back and some neck/spine issues. I think it's great, but of course be sure to ask your doctor if you have some serious issues (mine fully endorses it for me).

Yea make sure you find a trained instructor, not just someone who is teaching the class just for the hell of it. A professional can tell you what you are doing wrong, and that will help you learn. You dont want to hurt yourself worse!

Yoga AND Pilates can be very beneficial for lower back problems!! Get the go-ahead from your doctor and then take both of those things up.

FYI: If you have lower back pains, it could be from "sway back". When you over-exercise your ab muscles and don't exercise your back muscles...walk around in stripper heels all night...it can cause your lower back to "sway" (when it arches in the back). Just laying on the floor and flattening your back to the floor helps it. You can also do "swimmers" reach...when you lay on the floor on your tummy and then raise the right arm/left leg and left arm/right leg (like your swimming). It helps to strengthen lower back muscles.

I think yoga and pilates would do wonders for you. Make sure you DO tell your yoga teacher, though. There could be asanas that you should not attempt until your back is stronger/whatever.

Pilates have done my back a world of good. After going 3x a week for about a amonth, I didn't need my chiropractor anymore. Or muscle relaxers, for that matter!
