Default Looking for information on starting a private exotic dancing business

If anyone can give me info on starting a private exotic dancing business I would really apreciate it. I have looked all over the web and have not found any information on laws in california or what I need to do as far as the business side of it example hiring, contracts, ect. If anyone can help please let me know.

    Thank you

Maybe for now you should put an end to your "web search" and do your business in person. Go on down to city hall or wherever. They have all types of info on starting a business. Or you could just go in a strip club an speak with a manager.

Agree the best place to start is with City Hall. They let you know about permits, licenses and such to get going.

My advice; DON'T! There is far too much to deal with with your own business and the money is really not that good. After advertising, insurance, promotions, website, etc... you'll be left to deal with unreliable dancers, tempermental personalities, a wave of weirdos and looky lous just wasting your time. Not to mention the fact that if a dancer is hurt on the job, you are partially responsible as an employer, if a customer is hurt you are responsible, if a dancer whores her/himself on the job your business is shut down. Dollar per hour, you're far better off just getting a legitimate job.

Unless you're thinking about opening a bar. Then that is an entire different story.

Whoa! My first thought was to delete this message, but you have a right to speak you're mind. As i agree as well with some of what you said.

However even in another "public" business you still have to deal with all the issues you mentioned above. A bar? A person falls, you can still be sued, bitchy staff etc.

There is money in both ends of these business avenues, you just have to run a well rounded establishment!!! In a bar people do some crazy things as well, a bar a guy is more likely to pick up a partner.

thanks for all of the information I have already looked into the permits and licenses and all of that kind of stuff but really what I was wondering was the pay how that works with the dancers and the business meaning who gets how much and so on. Once again thanks for the info it is very appreciated.

WHy would you even consider deleting my message? there was nothing offensive about it. It all from personal experience. I agree that a customer can also slip and fall in a bar, but in a bar you make your dominate profit as an owner in booze and can better afford things like insurance, which would serious cut into the profits of a smaller agency type business. With a stripper business outside of a bar, you only have one thing to sell and that is the show. You have to split the proceeds with a mostly unreliable labor base (be realistic) , pay security and still pay promotions. It's not all happy times and partying while collecting tons of cash. WHy not tell the truth rather than just painting an untrue fantasy of only good times?

Hey, I meant to drop you this link earlier today, but it slipped my mind. Anyway I found this site that seems like it would have alot of beneficial information on owning or buying a strip club. Check it out, and tell me this is helpful in any way!

Because i consider alot of things first. Bottom line i have been a dancer most my life, and i don't paint a pretty picture of the industry, however i see the same shit in strip clubs that i see in bars. That is my point. 90% of non-strip clubs "bars" i have been in have security and drunk ladies flashing, so they either get thrown out (if they are lucky) or go to jail. At a strip club you already have nude ladies in the owners favour!

Just 1 example. A bar that has NO stripping can be very very naughty!!! Rack up alot of fines. Anyway, bottom line to operate a business that sells alcohol and such you need good (very good) management, strippers or not.

Very true. There's a lot more money potential, if you are sharp. But there is a TON more regulation, paperwork and licensing. When it comes down to it, starting your own business, no matter what it is, is a pain in the ass. You really have to love it and be driven to suceed to make it worthwhile. The old cliche is right; you end up working harder for yourself than for someone else.

I started a graphic design company a few years back. I ended up making a little more than I did working for someone else, but was doing 3 jobs and working 16 hours a day.

My first thought was, why wouldnt this be a "legitimate job" as you put it, devilsadvocate?

Bfetzer, look into making whoever your strippers are, independant contractors. That way, if something does happen to them, you are NOT responsible (thats not to say you shouldnt try to do everything you can to keep girls/guys out of harm). It seems like you're on the right track, and as far as I know, you don't pay the strippers, the strippers pay you an agency fee, that you determine. they keep the rest, and their tips. But they might do it differently in places other than chicago... sooo i dunno... good luck though!

OK, fair enough. Maybe I chose the wrong phrasing. I would have said the same thing for any business, not just stripping. It takes an amazing amount of work to run your own business, with less reward than if you were working for someone else. Not to mention that most new businesses go out of business within 6 months... especially stripping businesses. Out of all the years I've been doing this, out of the 100's of private agencies I've seen in my city, only 3 are still around. It's a tough gig.

By the way; independant contractor status will only cover you for tax purposes, not any crimes commited at a party you were an agent for.
When you contract out, you also contract them out to be a representative for you and your business. You are still liable.

I did not say you were no longer liable. Being an independant contractor myself, I am not eligible for, nor is the company expected to provide me with any kind of workers compensation or other benefits such as insurance.

    heres a link

That is the kind of thing I was referring to.

I would also like to add, that I'm sorry for not answering the original question. The outcall agencies I know of in Cali all advertise heavily in magazines, and on the internet. The other thing, is I dont know about all of cali, but San Diego requires a pricey escort license in order to be an outcall/private stripper. Good luck!!!
