Default Best place to buy plane tickets??

Sooo I'll be traveling quite a bit this summer and I was wondering what was the best way or website to buy the tickets. Should I buy in advance or wait till the last minute to get the best deal? I ask this because I bought my ticket to Florida for spring break way in advance thinking it was a good deal then right before I left the tickets were a 100 buck less.

Expedia has worked well for me. Never had any problems and their prices are usually pretty good.

I second Expedia.com. But if you want to use southwest.com or ata.com it's cheaper to buy through their websites (those are my favorite airlines). I've also heard good things about jetblue, but have never tried them out myself.

There's a thread about this in Dollar Den....but some new suggestions are, call your local travel agent. Sometimes they can give you a better discount since they book seats in groups, and can get you student or military discounts sometimes.
I was a diehard Expedia buyer, but when the site was down I browsed Travelocity and found lower prices for a flight.

Southwest, and airtran always have great last minute ticket prices, but www.expedia.com, and www.travelocity.com have great prices if you are planning your trip a little further in advance.

Sometimes going right to the airlines website will give you the best price. Jetblue is a GREAT airline, always had on time, good flights and buying in advance got really good prices with them.

In my experience it's only been cheaper one time for me to use one of the travel sites instead of just buying through the airline. You never know so it's best to plan your itinerary and then check every flight that day at each of the 'discount' sites and then compare them with rates from the actual airline. It will take some time but not that long.

The same goes with hotels too.

One thing, under no circumstances should you go through orbitz:

Just go on line type in airline tickets or travel a crap load of sites will show up go to a few of them and shop for your best price all the major players are about the same in service in my opinion so at any given time any one of them could offer you the best price happy travels .

I third (or fourth? or fifth?) . I'm in the process right now of checking flights/hotels/rental cars for when the In-Laws come down to visit us in October. I tried , and , but they were way more expensive than Expedia.

Definitely check there. It's the best I've found.

    Good Luck!

(I found a travel package for them for less than $1000 for a 5 day/4 night stay. They're way excited. Woot!)

Travelocity is great, particularly if you need to score a hotel and rental car in one shot.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.
