A vote for John Kerry, and you're outta here!!!

And to think of all the money these poor folks have dropped into the collection plate over the years.

And people wonder why so many people are turned off by religion.

I've always thought that there's more fighting in churches than any other group. Didn't people criticize Jesus for hanging out with the wrong crowd?

I did get a chuckle out of this one line:

People for the American Way, a national group that advocates for the separation of church and state, released a statement condemning the pastor's deeds and demanding action from President Bush.

It's a tiny little church in a little town nobody ever heard of. What do they want Bush to do send the national guard to escort the members back into the church?

This makes me wonder if this church can have their tax exempt status revoked now that they've entered politics.

I doubt it. Black churches routinely pass the offering plate around to raise money for democrats like Jesse Jackson. I don't think that's someplace either party wants the IRS to venture into.

It's not just Reverend Al or Reverend Jesse or Reverend Louis either. During last year's campaign, John Kerry and John Edwards spent quite a few Sunday mornings behind the pulpit of black churches as well.

My personal position is that organized religions have no place in politics. However, where this thread's point is concerned, even though you find cases like this news story where a 'strict' interpretation of church dogma leads to ejection of gay supporters, you'll also find other churches where a different church dogma approves of ordaining gay bishops.

well I didn't know where this would fit best because it could easily go in either quotes thread I started but after some thought I figured this thread was the best fit :

Because religious belief, or non-belief, is such an important part of every person's life, freedom of religion affects every individual. Religious institutions that use government power in support of themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths, or of no faith, undermine all our civil rights. Moreover, state support of an established religion tends to make the clergy unresponsive to their own people, and leads to corruption within religion itself. Erecting the "wall of separation between church and state," therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society. ~Thomas Jefferson
    Example of discrimination (Imho):

the only prudent way to treat Islamics in the US and western europe today is along the same vein as Russians and Eastern Europeans were treated during the 'cold war' days - with some degree of suspicion warranted until proven otherwise !

Interesting. I make the same statement about the Islamic faith and am labeled a bigot.

not even close... that had to do with painting every single person of that faith and every country where it is the largest faith as exactly the same and calling them all evil repeatedly despite having it pointed out by numerous posters that such a conclusion is incorrect....and I think the word used was prejudice not bigot...besides no one said that the theocratic governments were good..... just that not all Muslim majority countries or followers of Islam were the same or evil.

Whether its celibate catholic priests or veiled women, any religion should be free to define itself as it sees fit. However, if you look at many muslim majority countries, Islam has gone far beyond that, taking the powers of the state to impose this on the people. That is evil.
Sounds like old Tom and me are on the same page on this one.
