    Default Quotes on Religion

I found some great quotes today on a number of subjects including religion.... however since I am currently researching for a paper on commonplace arguments for and against gay marriage in current US culture I found this one particularly interesting and amusing so I thought I'd share:

The Bible contains 6 admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision

    ~Lynn Lavner

another one I thought applied perfectly to the Christian Conservative set was this one:

We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.
    ~Jonathen Swift

And I found this one to apply all to well to those here on SW and elsewhere who choose to judge the entire Muslim faith and culture :

Never judge a philosophy by its abuse.
    ~ St. Augustine

And just for good measure here is a humorous one:

A dyslexic agnostic does not believe in Dog.
    ~ Anon
    Example of discrimination (Imho):

the only prudent way to treat Islamics in the US and western europe today is along the same vein as Russians and Eastern Europeans were treated during the 'cold war' days - with some degree of suspicion warranted until proven otherwise !

I'm paraphrasing, but I've always liked this one:

All religious wars basically boil down to, "My invisible friend is better than your invisible friend."

For me there is a big difference between religion and faith...it goes something like this:

We have faith in what we don't understand....like the connection between people and species that make it important for us to work together. Too often Religion is an attempt to control what we cannot possibly understand.

That'd be nice, if it were accurate. The six admonishments to homosexuals are for what reasons? Oh. The 362 admonishments to heterosexuals are for what reasons? Oh.

You'll find that Christian aid workers/missionaries (like say my neighbor and his wife) in South Africa, many other African countries, South America, Central America and South East Asia would disagree with you rather strongly.
Never stand begging for that which you have the power to earn.

The truth lies in a man's dreams... perhaps in this unhappy world of ours whose madness is better than a foolish sanity.

    Miguel de Cervantes (1547 - 1616)

There is a lot of beauty in religion. Don't be turned off of it by a very small minority who use it for their own benefit and manipulate it to justify their hate and agenda. Religious types who use religion to justify their own hate, in fact are the worst enemies to their own religion... whatever that may be.

In the shaman's world, wilderness and the unconcious become analagous: the one who knows and is at ease in one, will be at home in the other. - Gary Snyder

A man who possesses a veneration of life will not simply say his prayers. He will throw himself into the battle to preserve life, if for no other reason than that he himself is an extension of life around him. - Albert Schweitzer
