Has anyone tried 5-HTP for depression/weight gain??

    Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone has tried 5-HTP for depression and to stop weight gain/carb craving? I just started it about 10 days ago because I want to wean myself off of my Zoloft. It seems to make me sleep better. Its all natural, supposed to increase ones seratonin.
    Any comments would be appreciated.

I would like to know the same thing. I have it I just haven't started taking it yet because I was afraid it would interact with my birth control pills.

It won't effect your bc pills. It will effect your serontonin levels in a great way. Definetly take it. Oh, and take it with food.

    Miss Taylor,
Have you taken it? Did you see any noticable difference if so? What milligrams did you take?

    Thanks,

My bottle says to take it 20 MINUTES before eating so read your bottle!

I just started it yesterday. I know that we CAN NOT take it with St. John's wort so I have to try and give away my worts, he he.
I did some extensive reading on it and supposedly it IS comparable to prescription drugs of the same nature.
From what I read it can take a few weeks to feel results, but most people feel them right away. I'll let you know what I noticed as soon as a week passes. MY bottle says to take up to three pills a day, right now I am taking two a day.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

I don't know anything about it. Increases your mood, makes you sleep better, AND lose weight? Sounds too good to be true but I'm curious now to check it out.

You'll sleep better. I take a product called Serene, it's super high quality 5-htp that you can only get from this neuro science lab. If I don't take it with food or right after eating, it upsets my stomach big time. I've just started taking this so I'm not the best to ask. I don't know if it makes you lose weight. If I lose anymore weight I"m going to wither away in to nothing.

We used to take about 5 of those they day after partying on E to counteract the seratonin depletetion effects. It seemed to work, I would just sleep a lot and feel better. But we took far more than the recommended dose. That's a good idea, I should pick some up............

Where can I pick it up Taylor?

I think Jacx got hers at GNC or maybe whole foods/central market. I'd definetly call Central Market and ask them if they have it. My chiropractor orders serene for me. It's part of the brain testing thing I'm doing.

The only reason i even know what 5-htp is is because about 5 years ago when I was big into the ecstacy scene you would take it after a night of rolling because it helped to replenish the serotonin that was dumped all at once into your brain. that's why it helps people with depression, it regulates serotonin.

I have some HTP in the cupboard.... from my occasional Ecstacy indulgences... I am thinking of taking it regularly, but have heard from several sources that it can react negatively with birth control pills. My friend Sarah took HTP and bc pills and was told she had some sort of abnormal plasma levels or something. Does anyone take HTP and The Pill without any problems? I'd love to take it regularly, as it does regulate my mood and help with apetite control.

I've met people that take it after rolling too, but haven't heard much about any other therapeutic effects. I do know that it's kinda hard to find in NYC. A lot of people rolling here, I guess!

It may counteract the feelings of depression you may get after coming down from an ecstasy high, but it is not going to help build your brain back up. Too much ecstasy can do permanent damage to the effect that you will have Parkinson's like symptoms. I always thought ecstasy seemed fun, but I will never take it, bc I've studied far too much psychology and neuroscience to let myself damage my brain that way.

Good for you, I'm sure your parents are proud. Its something I did once a year a couple of times, no worse than a couple of nights of drinking.........

I've actually SEEN MRI's (xrays) of a persons brain, one normal, one after the person had done a TON of X, the normal one you could see there was color all over the brain (blues, yellows, greens and reds) to signify that the brain was fully functional. The person who'd done X there were black spots or "holes" in the brain where they'd basically killed off part of their brain. after seeing that (It was a special on MTV a long time ago) I NEVER wanted to do X again. I only did it like 5 times total........and to tell ya something, I definitely felt STUPID the next day.

I talked to a neurosurgeon once who said that there was no conclusive evidence that X did permanent damage to the brain. He also liked to roll though so he might have been biased.

I took 5-htp for about a year to help with severe situational depression, and it probably saved my life. I'm not natually a depressed person, and never considered suicide until this period in my life when things fell apart totally outside of my control. I could barely get out of bed in the morning, and almost never left the house. 5-htp made a huge difference for me, and it's made as big a difference in the lives of several other people I know. It can be an amazing help, but it is absolutely not without risk.

Let me start by saying that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you be taking 5-htp and any other antidepressant at the same time without VERY careful supervision from your healt care professional. 5-htp may be "natural," but it's not inert and can have very serious drug interactions, especially with antidepressants, blood thinners/coagulants, and a few others. Please stop taking these two medications together, and talk to your doctor about first weaning youfself off your other med.

Here is what I know both from research and from doctors who work with this:

    1. 5-htp is more often prescripbed in other countries than most other anti-depressants. The US is one of the few countries where it isn't actually a prescription, and double-blind placebo studies show it's success rate is as high or higher for treating depression than other prescription antidepressants. It has very few side effects, most of which are gastrointestinal and will dissipate over the course of a few days.

    2. 5-htp does not work for everyone, which is true of all antidepressants. Warning: it may make you drowsy at first, so be careful. If it is going to wrork for you, it will do so within 7 days. If it has not worked within 7 days for your depression, it's not going to.

    3. You should start with the recommended daily dose (100 mg., 3 times a day), then slowly move the dose down until you find the lowest effective dose for you. Also, you absolutely NEED to take extra niacin with 5-htp if you are taking it long term to avoid serious health complications. Taking B6 (esp. if you're on birth control) will help you metabolize 5-htp more effectively, and 5-htp is best absorbed on an empty stomach, or with a small snack (a glass of milk, etc.) if taking it on an empty stomach is problematic..

    4. 5-htp is often used to aid in weight loss, but the dosages required are significantly higher than those used to treat depression. It's an appetite suppressant at the higher levels, and it's usually thought (even by homeopaths) that there are actually more effective appetite suppressants that aren't as likely to cause severe drowsiness and other possibly health complications as the high-dose 5-htp does.

    5. Because it's not regulated by the FDA, brands and even batches of 5-htp can vary widely in their efficacy due to quality-control issues. Do your research on brands before spending a ton of cash.

    6. 5-htp and hormonal birth control have not been shown to conflict. For myself, I've no children even after taking both bc pills and 5-htp for a year while married.

In relation to rolling and brain damage: most people cite a very well-publicized study by Johns Hopkins University which basically said that even one roll could turn your brain into Swiss cheese.

Two years ago it was discovered that the monkeys in the study were actually being given methamphetamine!

So I'm more inclined to agree with the neuroseurgeon. Of course, if you do indulge, it's best to do so in moderation. I personally have done it 5 times in six years, one pill each time. Doing it every weekend, or taking multiple pills in a night once in a while can't be good for someone.

Shwankie, thanks for your insightful and informational post. I think many people confuse "natural" with harmless. Cyanide is natural too...

    hmm....
I picked up a bottle today because I've been going through a pretty tough time emotionally lately. I am in a black hole It's all circumstantial....

Anyhow, I was revved to start it, but my bottle says that it should not be taken by people with IBD (I have colitis, a form of IBD). Of course I noticed that AFTER i bought it.. heh. I have tried to research the possible repercussions with disease, and came up blank. This is probably a shot in the dark, but anyone got anything on it? If the risks aren't serious, I think it may be worth it. My IBD is in remission, but I'd really rather not flair it back up.

I reeeeeeeeally don't want to have to start AD's.

I've used it. I was very consistent with it for about 2 months or so. Didn't notice any differences though..... I took it after bingeing on X. Between the time I was 16-17 I must have taken at least 60 pills. I never really got depressed though, and as of today I'm still fuctioning quite normally lol. I was lucky though, I was really stupid for doing that and could have fucked up my life. Most plp I knew that used it as much as I did wern't quite as lucky.
Never, EVER again will I take that stuff. I had a blast though!

I keep hearing about ssri's and weight gain. My sister was on lexapro and she claimed she gained 15 lbs I mentioned in other threads that I am an insomniac and an ex- valium-ambien-xanax user. Not anymore, but I haven't been able to sleep until trazadone was prescribed to me.

I've only been on it for less than a month. I have been working out more just in case the weight gain starts.

Anyway, is this true, I mean the weight gain, with all ssris'?

I've only taken it twice. They were both really fun times. However, I lived w/ a girl for a short time that had damage from taking too much X. Anyway, her Doc told her she had damage. She was very absent minded. She would do things like leave the bath tub water running and just start a lot of things and forget about them. She was just confused all the time and looked older than she was, 26.

I decided to just cherish the couple times that I did it.
