    Exclamation Skydiving?

My brother told me he wants to skydive this summer. I love him so much (no Angelina Jolie- Jamie Haven jokes please) so I screamed "F*ck You!" when he was saying he wanted to risk his life by jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. Then I offered to go jump with him, so if he forgets to pull his ripcord, after I land, I can walk over to the divot he makes in the ground and kick his ass for dying.
Can anyone tell me more about the sport of skydiving? Bro wants to score a a natural high-"adrenaline, the drug you score by scaring the sh*t out of yourself"- Bill Maher.

LOL @ Angelina & her brother thing. That did creep me out a bit. Who open-mouth kisses their brother anyway? ::shiver::

    Anyway.. Back on topic...

I've never skydived before, but I think one day I will. I would do that before I did bungee jumping. If I'm going to fall, I'm going to fall right, without a freaking cord.

How interesting, i was shopping for a parachute and such things.

It rules, I have 30 jumps
Wife has 11, and I even got my mom to try it.

God will take you when he wants you, if you believe in that (which I happen to). I'm all for jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. I hope to go do it this summer.

    My reason? Adrenaline.

Let him go. People rarely die skydiving. Hell, go with him.

I've done it once. I screamed my head off and my ears popped so badly on the way down I've never felt such ear pain. It was the biggest adrenaline rush I've ever had in my life. I don't really want to do it again though. It was like $175 that was gone in less than 5 minutes. And the wind just beats you to death.

Well, I gotta think this over. Weigh all the risks,...I had a lot to do this year, and didn't want to risk leg fractures or death. But I don't want him to go alone...
I keep thinking of the skydiving scene in "Fandango" (w/ Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson) LOL

    you raaaaaaannnnnnggg????

From sheer probability, the most dangerous part of sky diving is the drive to the airport (they'll sell this line at the sky diving class also, for sure). Coincidently, they also say that about scuba diving, bungee jumping, surfing with sharks, flying through hurricanes, etc... so take that statement for what it is worth.

There are three different types of sky diving:

Static Line - You jump solo from 3000-4000 ft with a cord attached to the airplane. At about 100 feet from the plane, the cord pulls tight and releases your parachute - free fall time: about 3-4 seconds. Pretty safe IMO... I've done this once before

Accelerated Free fall - you would jump from 10,000 to 12,000 feet with one or two other instructors. As you descend, they would be manuevering you to ensure your belly is facing towards the ground. They would also pull your rip cord to initiate the parachute.

Tandem - This is more dangerous then solo free falling or the rip cord. Essentially, you would have an experienced instructor strapped to your back. He/she performs the manuevering and pulls the rip cord at (hopefully) the right time.

With that said and my very limited experience, the most dangerous part of sky diving is the landing. Falling from a height of 4000 to 12000 feet makes it dificult to judge when you need to flare the parachute in order to adequetly prepare for the landing. They will tell you to flare when you can see the blades of grass; but obviously some people have better eyesight than others . If you flare to early, you'll land smack on your ass and risk injuring your tailbone. If you flare to late, you'll topple over and smack your face against the ground and probably be dragged for a few hundred feet. This is why tandem is more dangerous than the two other sky diving options. Obviously it is much easier to land solo rather than two people attached to each other.

With that said, all beginners should have a helmet with a wireless radio afixed inside. They instructors on the ground will guide you down and tell you at the precise moment when to land. I've had no problems (although I've only done it once..... twice after this weekend )

With all the risks associated with sky diving, it's one of life's accessible rushes that is worth experiencing in my opinion. I say go for it

Done it twice. That was enough for me. The worst thing that had happened to the dive junkies I met were a sprained or broken ankle from landing improperly on a very windy day. Ya'll will be fine!

I've done it once.....fun, but that was enough for me. My dad got me into it. He really loved skydiving. Until his last jump when his chute didn't open until he was dangerously low to the ground and he landed next to a freeway. He was ok, just some scrapes. But that was enough for his wife to say "one more jump and you're single".......she's now his ex, but he never did jump again.
Long story short, go for it. You never know what it's like until you try it.

I can see that it would be safe until you land.

Tandem sounds like fun - are there any good instructresses?
