    Default Sugar Confusion

Ok...I was reading this thing at my doctor's office that said you can lose weight if you cut calories. Period. It said that sugar intake didn't effect weight loss as long as you stay withing a reasonable calorie amount. So, here's my question, if I eat 1,200 calories or whatever I want ( I choose low fat, fat free, and sugar free most of the time), do you think I can still lose weight? I'm a hopeless poptart lover

Well, if you eat unhealthy things as your 1200 calories, your body definitely won't be getting anywhere close to all of the nutrients that it needs. Usually sugar is converted, and stored to fat in the body, while fruits, veggies, and whole grains are used for nourishment. So if you are cutting your calories this much, I guess you would still lose weight, but your body would be undernourished, and your weight loss probably wouldn't progress as quickly as it would if you were eating healthily. You also have to remember--junk in is junk out, and you are what you eat. How about eating one pop tart a day and eating healthy the rest of the day, and make sure to eat the pop tart early in the morning so that you can work it off during the rest of the day.

You are strong, you have inner and outer beauty, you are amazing" (anonymous).

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do. I've learned that if I cut out stuff I like completly, I'm setting myself up for disaster. I guess the whole, everything in moderation is key.

First of all...1200 calories is not enough for your bodies daily chores.

Second, just because it says fat-free/sugar-free does not mean jack. They may not use "fat" or "sugar" but they'll use something to replace it, and in most cases, it's even worse for your body (and your diet) than eating the real thing.

Third, if you are truly eating healthy and exercising, your body will let go of whatever it doesn't need. Most of the people I know have an unrealistic goal for themselves. They are trying to get into a size 2 when they can really, healthily, fit into a size 4 or 6. Me? At my healthiest weight, I am in a size 4-6. Anything less than that and I look completely anorexic. A friend of mine, at her healthiest weight, can only get into a size 8. So, being completely realistic...make your goals.

Last, you really need to write down what you are putting into your body on a daily basis. There are so many people who say they eat healthy, but conveniently forget the pop they drink, the coffee they drink, the potato chips they had, the pop tart for breakfast, etc. By themselves and in moderation, the above it not bad...but put them all together...and they'll add up quite quickly.

Write down every single thing you put in your mouth...no matter how inconsequential you may think it is...and I'm sure you'll be quite surprised. I know I was, when I first did that a few years ago.

Sugars fall into three groups: fructose, glucose and sucrose. Generally- fructose is fruit sugar, glucose is other, starch-type sugar (like gluten in bread) and sucrose is refined sugar, like white table sugar. Some carbs get turned into sugar inside the body so they can get "burned" (like booze and potatoes.)
There are interesting facts about how sugar affects different people: many indigenous peoples of North and South America are prone to diabetes and obesity because their bodies/ genes have not evolved to ingest the amount of sugar in modern processed food (most Western cusine is European-influenced.) Some pregnant women get gestational diabetes.
You'll also have to study your metabolism. Sugar is hard to reduce from the diet, but it is possible with work and patience.
