    Default People scare me ...

I was just having a conversation with my mother about how since we have moved across the country ( Mass to Washington ) it has become sadly clear how ignorant people are . When my family and I first decided that we were going to move and began telling people that we were moving to Washington we were surprised to discover that alot of our fellow New englanders had little to no idea where the state of Washington was . As if this wasn't bad enough as time went on it also became clear that alot of people thought that when we said Washington they were thinking Washington DC and not the state of Washington , this only became clear when they would maek comments about us not moving too far away . I was pretty shocked that alot of people didn't know where a coastal state would be located - for those reading this that fall into that category the state oof Washington is located in the north west corner of the US and is north of Oregon and directly south of British columbia , Canada .

Since I have been living out here I have also dicovered that the people of the Norht west have little to no idea where Massachusettes is or what exactly New England consist of or why we call it that . One guy didn't know that Mass is located on the east coast or any coast for that matter . I am so shocked and to be honest a little digusted that my fellow Americans are so ignorant about their own country , its very shameful . I mean these are coastal states that have played HUGE parts is our history . I do not feel like I am smarter than an average person nor am I trying to look down on people but it makes me sad and somewhat nervous that there are so may people like this out there . Not knowing the states isn't the worst thing its just that it has made me so aware of how unaware people of these everyday things . Another example of these things is that new ad on Mtv that shows people talking about the Holocaust , alot of the people weren't sure what it was and alot of them didn't think that is was something they needed to know about . I can't really get into how much that upsets me because its indescriable .

I am not the activist type , I didn't vote this year I a not trying change the world I was just blown away by this simple ignorance and I thought that this should be brought up . I am sure I have many flaws of my own including spelling poorly I am not trying to pick on people so no need to attack just trying to make people think . I thought I would post this here because Dancers are some of the most educated street smart people I know and I thought maybe you would apperiate what may brain has been suffering .

So...you're just now discovering that the average person is a moron?

I've been all over the States and U.S. territories (excepting the South, but my brother lives there.) I was lucky in that I started meeting military-affiliated people first, so they are used to learning about different American regions and they get moved all over the US & world very quickly.
My brother made us laugh with cute stories about how the locals don't understand him, but now he's getting a drawl, it's funny.
I guess the problem is regional pride & not needing to know about what goes on outside of your area....when we watch Northeastern US-set shows & movies (like "The Sopranos" on HBO or "Mystic River") we notice how differently the people talk and carry themselves....West Coasters/Californians seem blabby and odd by comparison....
PS I still laugh when Midwesterners call soda "pop" instead of "soda."

An exotic-looking student from a very top university here said that when she told her fellow students she was from Hawaii, more than a couple of them asked her how she liked living in the United States.

The average person is NOT a moron. It's the under average people that you are dealing with.

I've driven from San Francisco to Tallahassee via Atlanta, but I've only visited the Tower of London and the other stuff once despite having lived in London for a lot of years. It's the way things work - you often only find out stuff about your country when you have an overseas visitor.

I've been all over America and there's stupid people everywhere. What's worse is that they seem to reproduce sooner and more often than smarter people. It's sad, really. We're becoming a country of fat, lazy, stupid, leeches.

Although, when I was high school in 11th grade a teacher asked a girl where the USA was on a map and she pointed to Russia, I thought "my god, how freaking sad"......and this was in 1987....please tell me people are not getting even more stupid.....

Yes, it's sad. Unfortunately, there are many ignorant people in the world. Even worse, I’ve found that many ignorant humans will spend their time berating anyone smarter they are.

Personally, I try very hard to surround myself with people who are smart, knowledgeable and interesting--it makes for a much better life--but sometimes you just can't help but be in the company of fools

people don't scare me...they irritate me...and i've gotten used to ignorance...that's one of the reasons i've choosen to stay to myself and not say much to anyone...unless necesary (sp)...

why do some people still have to fight to get the same opportunities that are given to others?

I remember while I was in Florida:
Custy: So, where are you from?
    Me: Pennsylvania.
    Him: Really? What part?
    Me: Lancaster.
Him: Oh. Where is that in proportion to Milwaukee?

I still can't figure out if he didn't realize Milwaukee isn't in PA or was just being random.

Did anyone see a JayWalking a few years ago where they were asking people "what two states are outside of the Continental US?" and the one guy answered "Canada and Mexico"? I still wonder if those things are taped.

In proportion to Milwaukee?? its probably about 3%...if he meant relation, tell him to put his back to the wind. Then turn 15 degrees to the right.Walk till you cross big hills (you'll need to hold your breath for quite a while for the first part) When it gets flat again on the other side, look for people in big black hats.If you come to really sarcastic people eating cheesesteaks, you've gone too far Turn around and go till you smell horse shit.

Believe it or not...there actually is a Milwaukee, Pennsylvania. Looks to be about five miles west of Scranton.

Hahaha, well then I'm about two hours away - I wonder what the population is? Most people [at least, the ones who didn't ask if I was Amish] asked where that was in proportion to Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, but Milwaukee really threw me for a loop.

There's 300 million people in this country. A massive proportion of them are going to fall on the undereducated side of the curve.
