    £1m sex chatline cheats

    SEX TALK: Stephanie Nield

BENEFIT cheats working for sex chatlines in Greater Manchester have swindled public funds out of almost £1m.

The massive scam was uncovered during a three-year investigation which started after a tip-off.

Officers from the Department of Works and Pensions then launched an inquiry into the sex line industry, which has two main centres in Manchester and London.

It revealed how women, based either at home or in offices, supplied their "services" to clients while claiming benefits.

Some working from home even had special ring tones put on their phones so they would know if an incoming call was from a client.

If they were alerted that it was a client they could take the call in a private room or make sure any children were not present while the call took place.

During the inquiry up to 25 arrests were made at one agency which supplied workers to the chatline industry.

    Swindled

A number of other chatline businesses have also been investigated and it is believed up to £1m has been swindled out of public funds so far.

The scale of the scam was revealed at Manchester Crown Court when a 45-year-old woman admitted she was involved in defrauding the Department of Work and Pensions out of more than £20,000 while working for a chatline.

Stephanie Nield is paying back the money at £8 a week. At that rate it will take her 50 years to clear the debt.

Nield, of Whitley Road, Collyhurst, Manchester, came to the attention of the DWP during the investigation.

It was revealed that although her claim was legal at first, she then started working and failed to notify the benefits agencies.

Between April 2001 and February 2005 she wrongly claimed incapacity payments and housing and council tax benefits while working for an agency which supplied chatline workers.

Nield, an unemployed cook, had used a false name and when quizzed by investigators admitted the offences.

But her counsel, Alison Mather, said Nield never realised the enormity of her offending.

    Isolated

"She has now found this very sobering and realises now the seriousness of her position," she added.

Nield said she only got a job on chatlines because she felt isolated at home.

Ms Mather said: "Initially it was only for a few hours but then it escalated when financial needs got the better of her. She now knows it was wrong but she just did not think."

Judge David Hernandez allowed Nield to walk free after giving her a community punishment order for 220 hours.

He told her: "These offences are very easy to commit but very difficult to detect.

"They are very often committed, but not exclusively, by women like you with no previous convictions.

"I take the view I can exercise leniency in this case but it is a marginal decision and on balance it seems to me a non-custodial sentence is appropriate."

Isn't smoking supposed to mess up your throat so that you have a deeper sexy voice?

Alot of PSO's will smoke to sound older more experienced yes! I have come across many who did not want to sound like that little girl who knew nothing, and said they took up a "smokers voice."

Alot of what is selling today on the lines are MILF's. So they want to sound older, and experienced, some anyway.
