    Diet Dilemma!

Okay, I am uber confused about my diet. It seems that there are so many articles and opinions out there of what is right and wrong diet wise and quite franky it's confusing and fustrating me!

So I eat healthy..... I eat yogurt, fruits, salads, protein (mostly from soy), whole wheat pitas, granola with skim milk and that's about it other than an occassional cheat of a cookie or two. So it's very low carb, high protein. But the thing is I eat A LOT of fruit just due to the fact that I have a sweet tooth and it's the only healthy natural sweet thing I can eat that's healthy. But then I've read that fruit makes you fat and that you should only have 1-3 servings (which are the size of a tennis ball) a day! I eat two or three times that! I could replace the fruit I consume witrh granola and yogurt but that has a ton more cals than the fruit does. Argh.... so confused!

I'm so upset right now because I do 3+ hours of intense cardio a week and think I eat healthy but I've gained 5lbs!!! I don't know what the hell is going on! I'm so fustrated and don't know if I can cut out fruit in my diet.... I feel like I'm restricting myself enough as it is. I haven't had pasta, bread, corn chips etc in over 4 months and yet I have still managed to pack on an extra 5lbs! My clothes still fit the same and I have been weight training for a while (over 6 months I'm guessing) so it might be muscles mass, but I don't know why I didn't gain the muscle-mass 4 months ago and it suddenly decided to show up now..... It doesn't make sense so it must be fat that I've gained!? Ack! Sorry for this being so long I'm just really fustrated and need guidance with my diet.

    Hey TM!

I eat apples, oranges, berries, melon, peaches and pears which all are much bigger than a tennis ball other than the peaches. I also allow myself a banana every now and then (I'd say once every two days).

    Yes I weight train.

edit to add - Mostly only apples and oranges.

Well if you havent changed your wieght training workout do it now. Changing it or making it harder will confuse your body and will make it work harder.

Good idea on the bananas though. They are high in sugar hense high in carbs. When you eat the other fruits eat a handful size. Thats all you really need..unless your hand is freakishly big. One thing I do like when I eat peaches is I buy them in the juice canned...no syrup and less calories. Cuz well Im lazy. Well if you eat yogurt you probably dont need to eat the banana b/c youre already getting the amount of potassium you need. You also get alot of other nutrients and vitamins from the other fruits you eat. Not say they are all bad for you but take a closer look at your diet.

Have you tried writing down your food for 3 days and putting it in a nutrient analysis program? I had to do that for a school thing and it was very helpful. You can see right down to the macro nutrient of things you ingest.

Thats all I know for now...but good to see you around

I think it could easily be muscle. That diet sounds pretty healty to me and although fruits have sugar they are mostly water and fiber. . .so the best thing I can say is you may want to invest in a scale with a body fat monitor. They cost about $50 but then you can keep track of what you are losing/gaining. hope that helps

I've been on a workout/diet plan the past few weeks and it's kind of annoying that I weigh exactly the same, despite all my hard work, but I do look skinnier...

so instead of obsessing about the scale, I stopped weighing myself and started taking pictures to track my progress

Nobody got fat just eating fruit alone. While it may be good to limit it some, there is probably something else in your diet making you gain weight (i.e., too much sodium, alcohol, etc). Great idea of writing down everything you eat for a while, helps to identify hidden calories. Also try to up your water intake. Good luck!

Are you by any chance on anti-depressants? Just asking because I was having the same problem as you, working out all the time and eating well and I was still gaining weight. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Then my doctor informed me that the anti-depressant I was on(zoloft) usually causes you to gain an average of 25 pounds! So I went off it and am now toning up and losing weight(finally).

You seem to eat really healthy so I doubt your diet is making you gain weight.

I feel for you. it's such a terrible feeling when you are trying so hard to lose and you end up gaining. I hope you find the cause of your weight gain soon

Also, Have you had you thyroid checked?

Have you written down everything that you have been eating and totaling the amount of calories? Because a fruit can have about 100 calories in it and they add up fairly quickly if you consume alot of them. You may want to track your calories.

When I was on Prozac I gained about 25 pounds. I also ate worse though, fast food every day. But I think the Prozac was just making me feel okay with being lazy but in the long run that made me more miserable.

Emily - That's a great idea girl! But the prob is that I'm a slave to the scale. I'm not obsessive about it or anything, I weigh myself after my work outs at the gym. It's funny tho, I've seen girls that weigh a lot and look so small and then girls that weigh little and look chubby. It all has to do with fitness level, muscle mass and all that fun stuff. I wish I could get over the scale like you have! That fat/muscle weighing scale that Tgaski mentioned sounds pretty awesome. I've never heard of one of those but it sounds like a great investment. I wonder how they work.

KittyKat - No, I don't drink. That is why i am so fustrated with my weight gain. Because it seems as if I am doing everything right. Intense cardio, weight training and eating well. maybe since I've been working out for so long my body has gotten use to it. I certainly hope that's not the case!

NaughtyAngel - Very good point! I may be eating healthy but I might be eating too much. Like TM said I should keep a food log.

Magdalena - No, I'm not on anti-depressiants but I use to be. It does keep the weight on for sure! I was on a high dose of Prozac for over 2 years and I was miserable on it just like Bunny. As soon as I came off of it over the year of being drug-free I lost over 30lbs!

Thanks for all your replies ladies! *muah*

Although I'm very anti-low carb anything, I really cant say that I've ever heard of anyone getting fat due to fruit. Have you had a doctor study your metabolism at all? Give you an idea of what speed its on? The high amount of sugars in fruits get burned so quickly, become energy. That sugar is good for you. Especially if you dance for a living. And lets not forget the viatmins. Kiwis alone are such an amazing source of vitamins!

    Here's what I eat per week, fruit-wise:

    1 - 2 bunches of bananas
    8 - 10 kiwis
    3 apples
1 bunch frozen green grapes (I like em frozen cause it's always hot here!)
    2 - 3 mangos.

I eat some of this fruit as is, some I shove in the blender with some ice and/or milk.

Well, I forgot to mention that I also eat cheese and peanut butter..... Those two totally fattening things just slipped my mind. But I've always eaten them (of course in moderation) and never gained weight before! Even over christmas when I stuffed myself full of chocolate and booze and missed the gym a bunch of times I didn't gain weight. It must be muscle mass or else I'm pregnant. I asked my bf and sister if I looked any bigger and they didn't notice.

I'm so silly fretting about 5lbs when I don't even dance anymore. But geez, I'm trying to lose weight not gain it! I'm going to make an appointment with my doc tomorrow.

Oh, and Paige.... Why are you anti-low carb?

Honestly? I think that lowering the amount of carbs one takes in is also going to drag down their energy level drastically. It's like putting #5 in gas into yer car when it's on empty, when your car takes $20 to fill it up. Yanno? That $5 will only get you so far before yer out of Ge Up And Go.

The mass majority cant keep its mind set on if carbs are good or bad. The diet rollercoaster keeps changing what is good and what isnt. Fats... carbs... etc etc. It's like a teeter-totter. Carbs are good one day, and then bad the next. Pre-Atkins and all of that jazz, people were still able to be healthy, and be trim, and be however they'd like. Atkins doesnt seem to be changing the waistline of the world, but hey... it isnt killing people so I dont bitch about it much. But I honestly have to say, a good 85% of the people I know personally who cut back the carbs have become less than energetic, always tired. It worries me sometimes...

    But that's just me.
