    getting back into it

    Hi ladies,

I briefly worked as a dancer 8 years ago: 3 months, full time, Montreal. Now I am in Manhattan and I would like to pick it up again part time, on the weekends (for now): two nights a weekend or a day and a night. I am wondering where to start.

The place I worked for was no touching, 3 songs on a stage (and then the private dances). The stages in Montreal were big, at least where I was. I’ve been to a few clubs here but they are quite small and there is no room to walk around. I am looking for a place that’s clean and classy and where I would be comfortable. I really miss the stage. I miss the whole thing and that’s (one of the reasons) why I want to get back into it and, of course, there is the financial side. What places would you recommend for me to start out with? Perhaps I could start at one place and then, as I get comfortable, move to another? How is moving around clubs looked at? Where could I go get outfits? Is there a special place which is for the business only, custom tailors, etc.? If and when I go to an audition, do I have to wear full blown makeup? I’ve never auditioned.

    I’m 5 feet 2 inches, 36B, petite, European.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Carla

The place you dance at depends on whether or not you are comfortable dancing nude or topless. Topless clubs in the city are better because guys can drink and they tend to spend more money. However, I don't work much in the city (no PEC or Scores for me thanx) but other girls who do work in the city say it's much slower in the summer. For me, Long Island and upstate are better bets for the summer. You can definetly move around, New York does not make you get a dancing liscense or tell you which clubs you can and can't work at. There are a couple chains though-I think the owners of Flashdancers also own Private Eyes and New York Dolls. Stilletto and Lace have the same owners. I worked at places outside of the city, but there were housemoms who custom made outfits, etc. I never really shopped much in the city, but I'm positive I've passed shops in the village where they sell stripper gear. When you go to ANY AUDITION, you want to look your BEST! I dunno how you look without make up, but whenever I go to an audition, I always do my hair, make up and outfit nice.

And I dunno if you're Canadian/no dual citizenship and you travel back and fourth alot, but I had a girlfriend last year who got CAUGHT UP with immigration who told her she couldn't come back to the states until she had proof of employment in Toronto. Just something to keep in mind......good luck baby.

Thank you so much, Pimpy718!! You are so right about the immigration thing. Everything got cleared a few months ago - my whole life had been on hold up to that point. I am going to go and do research and visit a few more places and keep preparing for this thing. I am quite nervous. Thank you very much for all the pointers!!

I've been psyching myself up for all the stuff that comes with the job. It is not an easy job. The hours, the types you have to endure and be nice to .. . So I've been gearing up for all that. I started looking however I got a lot of negative attitude and really vicious insults from people around me (not people in the business but people I thought were friends) and it was a sort of a setback but now I am resolved to it. You start doing something you know you have to do and then all of a sudden you get this backlash and you're alone. So I've been restructuring some things in my head. No question I will benefit from full on makeup. I don't look like myself in makeup. I'll swing by the village to look at some shoes. I am wondering if I should get platforms but you know what, I could wait for that until after I check out a few more places and see what the girls wear. And I am working on my moves. I have to look for music also. I am busy during the week and this is a slow project so it's likely I will be in full speed, working at some place, accustomed and all by fall. However I will keep the summer comment in mind. I have a lot of respect for all of you working ladies!!!When life serves it to you you do what you have to do. Better to have guts and stand up for yourself than anything else. I will be thinking twice before becoming somebody's wife again. What is a girl to do? I'm so glad to be able to talk to you!!

    Thank you again
