Default What to tip people (cabbies, servers, stylists, etc)

I tip servers $0.25 - 25%, depending on the quality of service. Anyone who supplies a beauty service receives 30-50% because I am a very difficult client, one who's late and cancels appointments.

What do you tip doormen, cabbies, aetheticians, or anyone else you want to add to the list?

Average 20%. Depending on services, beauty I tip more, heaven knows I'm to lazy to take care of myself. Doormen . . eh. . I could have opened it myself and depending on their duties ie. stand there and try to be cute or call a cab for me and act as security.

For bad service, I usually only leave a couple of bucks. But, for really good service...I am prone to leave 30%+. I know what it is like to be in the "tip" business, so I will never "stiff" anyone unless they are just being really bad...even then, they usually end up with 15-20% depending on how bad they were. heh

Masseuse gets 20% . . . bellmen $5 on check in-check out, more if there's a lot of bags . . . valet a couple of bucks (you want to find out if they pool their tips when staying at a hotel; most do) . . . hairstylist 20% . . . aestheticians I usually don't tip since the ones I've gone to either operated out of a doctor's office or owned the office; if they work out of a spa though, 20% . . . cabbies 20% but I will stiff a motherfucker if he takes me the long way to the airport . . . pretty much 20% across the board and certainly extra for good service (and it doesn't take too much to impress me).

For adequate service, I usually tip 15-20%. I tip 20% or greater for above average or excellent service. I only tip lower than 15% if the server/bartender/whoever is rude. If they're slow at their job but they're friendly, I still tip at least 15% because they might be new and I know what it's like to be new to a job.

Move to the UK - we have a different culture here.

Tips are not obligatory, and are only given for good service.

In the US, it seems you tip everyone in sight. I was in the US recently on business. As I left the airport, a uniformed minion waved at the nearest taxi - about 20 ft away in a rank - then held out his hand for a tip. I would quite cheerfully have walked the 20 feet and got into the taxi myself.

(Of course, being a Brit, I was far too polite to protest. )

I like the "tips are not obligatory" attitude. The fact that we have allowed tips to become a person's "salary" is really annoying. Restaurant owners are permitted to push part of the salary directly onto the patrons. That makes no sense to me.

    Pizza Delivery Guy - $2
    Cabbie - $2
    Bartender - 20%
    waiter/waitress - 20%
    Doorman - $1
    Annoying Bathroom Dude - $1

I tip waitstaff 20% if they do their job, 30% if they do it great. The rare outstanding waiter/waitress gets 40%. If they try hard but aren't good, they get 20% for their effort.

If they don't give a fuck they get $.05, just so they know I didn't forget the tip. It's my way of saying "fuck you".

I give the bartenders 30%. Sometimes I give them 50%-100%, like when they hook me up bigtime or I have a small tab ($30 or less).

Food delivery people get $5 most of the time. When we get a big order ($100) I'll give them $15.

Cabbies usually get $3. Depends on the fare and if they're rude or not.

Bathroom guy gets $1 if he hands me a towel and doesn't look pissy. If I buy something he gets $2.

Here' a website on tipping etiquette. See if you agree with their numbers.

    http://www.tipping.org/tips/TipsPageTipsUS.html

I had to bring up the "exotic club" section. Not disputing these numbers, but the gal that submitted them must live in NYC or something.

Dancers: The dancers, many nights, don't get tipped as well as they should. If a patron is going to sit at the stage, minimum $3 tip per song, per person. If they are at a table, they should at least get up once during each song. Even one dollar is usually appreciated.

Waitress: Drinks in exotic clubs are a little more expensive than in regular ones. I think for most beer, $1 per beer works, more for mixed drinks, since there is preparation involved. I have been a bartender, waitress and dancer, and many people don't tip accordingly. Waitresses should get tipped more regularly if the patron is sitting at the stage or at a table. That is a lot of running, especially on a busy night. Bartenders are more likely to get tipped, but several of my customers would decide to tip at the end of the night and then conveniently "forget" to do so. And of course, the standard 15% on credit or debit cards should be the rule in an exotic dance club as well.

My personal scale from what I've actually used:

    Barber = $2-3
    Taxi = 15-20%
    Bathroom Attendant = $1
Casino Dealer = $1-5 (depends on whether I'm winning or not)
Drink Service = $1 per drink ($1.50-2 for expensive drinks like say over $6)
Food Service 15-20% for satisfactory service, 20-25% for good service, 25-30% for good service from a hot looking waitress. They're always happy to see me at Hooters.

I'm a pretty generous tipper because I know how hard these people work for what little they earn. My personal scale (for Washington, DC, New York, Vegas, LA and other major cities):

    Barber: $5
Aesthetician (facials and blade shaves): 20%
    Taxis: 25%
    Bathroom attendant: $2
Casino dealer and pit crew: $40 - $100 or percentage of hot table
    Dancers: Really no limit here; stage is $20 - $100 increments; usually go to stage with other dancers so the average is probably $40 - $60 per stage; VIP can really get a bit insane;
Club waitstaff: 25 - 30% of bar tab
    Bouncers: $20
Hooters: OK, Hooters is an interesting case. I have been very generous to Stripper JV over the years. I actually tip 200% on most tables, plus gifts (just gave a sweet 18-year-old a new pink iPod), but then I also do shopping trips and dinners with them, too. What can I say? Somebody has to introduce the JV to the varsity game!

I tip usually about 20%.I was always wondering though whether to tip or how much to tip at the full service gas stations. That's a question we discussed with friends many times, but still is unclear.

So, to my understanding, people in 'service' professions in the US don't make a particularly good hourly wage, and so tips are expected to up that wage to something decent?

Australia's the same as the UK, we tip if you've done a particularly good job. Mind you, you can make a pretty decent wage as a waiter/waitress, particularly if you're managing to scam both 'casual' wages and decent hours (as in $20/hour). Strip clubs are, as always, a different story. Waitresses get my shrapnel on every drink (smallest Aussie bills are $5, so anywhere up to that). Dancers get some indeterminate number in bill(s).

Yep, the wage for waiters in the U.S. is $2.13/hr! The employer is supposed to make up the difference if tips don't up that to at least minimum wage.

RD, the tip page Doc C referred to said $1-$2 is nice for gas station attendants.

    i tip waiters/waitresses 25 %-50 %

If they do a horrible job i tip 20%

valet i tip 10 bucks always (my good friend was a valet, now a lawyer)
hairdresser i give about 20 percent and nail salon about 40 percent.

Generally, the cheaper the check the more % i give , and if they give me free drinks i make up for it in their tips and give them 25 percent and up.

The service industry is rough, they make 2.13 in the USA, so i do what i can.

I always wonder if you are supposed to tip the dog groomer? I know some people that do but my groomer doesn't have a little line on the sales slip for a tip.

Restaurant Wait staff 15-20% and also depending on the class of the place.
    Cabbie usually $3+
    Valets/door person $2
    Bell person $1/bag
Dancers $20 for a good set
Casino cocktail waitress $1 a drink since it's free
SC cocktail waitress usually at $3 per trip but also depending how many drinks I am ordering that round.
The towel guy in the SC restroom $1 every couple of trips.
Casino dealers usually at least $5 for every good hand won at bj, but I usually like to bet it for them; so that, they have a chance to double it.

OK I apologize if I forgot anyone.
