    Default Horror Movie Help

Ok I feel a lil embarrased writing this but I figured I could get some good advice from the guys and girls at SW. I have heard that The Shining is a really great film and I was flicking channels tonight when I saw it was on about an hour into it. I hate watching films without seeing them right from the beginning so I didnt plan to watch it but I did just see 1 minute or so. During this time I was really quite scared although really nothing happened. Basically my dilemma is that Im the biggest scaredy cat in the world. I have an alarmingly over active imagination and despite being over 18 Im still a lil scared of the dark when im alone. The thing is it bugs me that I cant get over it because I know im missing out on some cinematic greats which if i wasnt so damn scared would bring me a lot of pleasure (from reviews of films iv read). I will not ever watch slasher films with blood and gore and gross limb hacking things cos I honestly dont believe that is entertainment but Im talking about more subtle horror, like hitchcock. So what Im asking is : How gory is the shining?, How can I get over my unneccesary fear (im not talking a little jumpy, I mean severe terror for weeks) and am I missing out? Any good films I could start with? Should I not even attempt The Shining?? Help people, I dont want to limit my life just because I get scared of stuff.

The Shining is not a gory film, but it is an unsettling one. From the cinematography to the Overlook twins to Danny's creepy mantra, it creeps me out much more than a gorefest. I will say it's in my top 5 scary movies, and it has my #1 creep me out scene in it. But then again, many people will watch it and say it's boring and nothing happens and it's lame, etc.

"The Shining" was a well-done film, though, as with most cases, the book was much better in several aspects. That being said, I like to watch it now simply because my wife's name is "Wendy", and much fun can be had with the "I'm not gonna hurt ya Wendy, I'm just gonna bash...your...fucking....brains ....in. Now, gimme the bat." line of Jack's. If you're that easily frightened I think I might pass on it, but no it's really not all that gory. Someone gets an axe to the chest, and there's a huge wall of blood that comes roaring out of an elevator, but it's more of a creepy mindfuck movie about a guy going slowly insane locked in a haunted mountain hotel all winter. Excellent movie though, IMHO. What other horror movies can you sit through? My wife scares easily too, and wont watch most really creepy ones. For example, she has never made it all the way thru "The Exorcist".

i loved the Shining, its not really gory, my son, who is 4, has seen it and not been scared by it!!

As far as for overcomming your fear, why not get a bunch of your friends together for a little sleepover or something and get some old Hitchcock movies or something and watch them!! That way, you'll have company for the whole night, in case you do have a nightmare, and while you're watching the movies, if you do get creeped out, you can talk about it, and they can help you out!!!

I've actually dated a few GUYS who were big scardey cats, I only managed to help out one, the other 2 couldn't handle it, but left all the lights on every time we watched a movie and we talked, not just about the movie, but just about stuff, still paying attention to the movies, and before long, we were watching scary movies in the dark and not talking so much!

Anyways, hope this helps you some!!!

Thanks guys!Believe me i dont think Im gonna be able to sit in the dark and watch these films for quite some time! Hitchcock might be a good place to start. I think I can cope with an axe in the chest as long as its not really over the top gross. I went to the cinema to watch what lies beneath and was frankly disturbed by the bathtub thing and Iv heard theres a similar bathtub thing in the shining. I watched the Damien Omen films and rather enjoyed them from what I could remember because again it was more sinister than gory. Although I was watching it with my BF who gave me warnings on when to look away!

I love LOVE horror movies. It's my fave genre, only I'm a huge slasher and gore fan. I'm not violent at all, I just love special effects. I can do some crazy make-up and effects myself. You might want to start off with the more mild "Psycho" (the real version with Anthony Perkins, not the Vince Vaughn/Anne Heche abomination),. Also, "Jaws" scared me. Yes, I can admit it, sharks scare the shit out of me. Maybe even "The Ring", or "Feardotcom"? They're not too graphic, just mental scares. Also, "Arachniphobia" still scares me as I'm terrified of spiders. *Shudder*. Just start off slow. The sci-fi channel has some good ones on occassionally.

I love horror and arthouse movies! I can't remember the last time I was frightened by a horror. I guess because most of them are fantasy and stand no chance of happening in real life, that desensitises me somewhat.

However, there are certain movies that make me hesitate when I think of watching them. These are the more ''real'' disturbing movies such as 'Boys Don't Cry' and such. Sometimes I don't like facing the harsh reality of what this world can bring and films like these often leave me thinking about them for a day or so afterward. It's more of a shock than a fear factor.

But in all honesty, the thing that scares me the most (honestly!) is playing horror computer games! Some years ago, my brother persuaded me to play Resident Evil in the dark, alone with surround sound. I was scared shitless. I think it had a lot to do with yourself playing as the character and so you are solely responsible for their fate. And also the fact that a lot of unpredictable things happen in that game. Shit, thinking about it now gives me the creeps...

Silicone, go to Ask.com, and type "Horror Film Compendium" in the searchbar. That site has an extensive list of horror films, along with descriptions, personal opinions of Rish and the Tyrannist (the guys who run the site), and skulls next to certain ever-present themes in horror flicks. Check it out, it should help.

What about going to the theatre with some friends an watching a horror movie, then going out to dinner. That should take some of the fear away, being surrounded by people. A good movie I recently saw in the theatre is "High Tension", I hardly ever get scared when I watch horror movies, but this one just gave me the creeps. It was kinda scary but also really good.
