Default how do you save money on beauty products?

Why oh why does it have to be so EXPENSIVE to be beatiful?

I have been trying to find ways ot save $$$on beauty products and makeup and so on. I woudl love to hear any more suggestions for natural or home-made beauty products or other ideas. Here are some things I do:

    • Only wash my hair every other day to save shampoo and preserve the color
    • Wear rubber gloves wehn washing dishes, wear garden gloves when gardening, wear gloves when using any product that contains petroleum or lanolin , to perserve my nails
    • Do my toenails at home (acrillic finger nails are jsut beyond me. And I do have to have them, my natural nails are scarred and ugly)
    • Use epsom salts to exfoliate instead of expensive prepared products
    • use cheap vegetable oil to shave instead of baby oil
    • use olive oil to remove eye-makeup (and surprise, my wrinkles are almost gone!)
    • do my hair color at home
    • do my own self-tanner
    • use peroxide to whiten teeth instead of crest white strips
I am going to check out AVON and Drugstore.com , too. I have extremely sensitive skin that breaks out from exposure to most beauty products, so I have to special-order most of my skin care.

    All suggestions are welcomed!

Right on! I do almost all of that too.
Shop discount stores like Big Lots, "99 Cents" Stores often you'll find brand-name products for very low prices...
You can also use foods like fruit, oatmeal, eggs, honey and yogurt for beautifying. Masques, scrubs, etc.

I use granulated sugar to exfoliate. I've actually been using it since I was about 12 when I first read about it in a dear Heloise column.

I also wear rubber gloves when I do dishes (or any kind of cleaning) except I slather on a rich hand cream or shea butter before putting on the gloves then I wash dishes in hot ass water.

I like olive oil for makeup removal, hair deep conditioning, sometimes I mix a little olive oil with alot of sugar for a nice body scrub.

I really like the Eucerin co-q10 night cream and it's only like $10.

Great suggestion, about Big Lots, MM! I like Target too, I got an Almay skin smoothing refinisher lotion for around $4.00 in the clearance section

I love the idea of olive oil to take off make-up and stay wrinkle free, I've been using vitamin E oil..
I also have Vitamin E cream..
Colleen, there are a TON of money saving ideas on this site, you should look around. I think you'll find some great ideas not only from who answers this but also older entries.. That's why I started using olive oil in my hair, it's there right now, that's for sure..
I've also done the mayo trick, which really does keep hair happy, it's meant to add protein and strengthen, not moistrurize, so you have to decide how you want to add to your hair..

I have dry skin sometimes on my face and body so I mix regular oatmeal together and some vitamin E oil w/ a bit of water. I let it sit for a second to get all soaked in but not goopy.

I smear it all over my face and body where I have tiny dry patches. My body freaks out everytime the weather changes dramtically. Nice here there isnt much change in weather! I leave it on for like 15 min until it starts to dry then wipe it off with a moist washcloth.

I also tried mayonaise in my hair to moisterize it; um bad idea my hair was stinking and stunk like an old sandwhich for a few days. I tried a day old bottle of beer to my hair and it gave it a bunch of shine w/o the smell.

great ideas. I have wanted to try the mayo in the hair trick, but I was afraid something like that would happen! I will definitely try the oatmeal mask. My skin gets really realy dry with the acne treatments I have been using, so I need something to counteract that wothout going overboard in the other direction.

gypsy: what do you do with the olive oil in your hair? I am going to start buying it in bulk if I find enough uses for it. I love it for my eyes because for $4 you can get a bottle 3 times the size of a cilnique eye makeup remover, and it works better.

Underestimated: I started useing the olive oil for eye-make remover, and lo and behold, all those tiny fine lines around my eyes have disappeared! It took 5 years off my face, I'm telling you!

MM: do you have any recipies?

Olive oil is my best friend when it comes to moisturizing and deep conditioning my hair. I bleach every few weeks so it gets rocked. It really puts the shine and softness back into it. I usually let it sit for a few hours on my day off. I so this maybe once a week. If I really want to give it love I leave itin for a full day. I don't put a ton it if I'm going to this. It's actually not too greasy after a few hours. But, the difference is amazing!
I'm def. going to use the olive oil on my face, I actually went and did right after reading it on here and it poulled dirt off right away, dirt I didn't even know was there.
I also have a Sally's card which gives you a pretty decent discount on hair and beauty products, plus you can buy in bulk or just buy the one-timer packet to try something out. This way you wither get a great deal on what you want or are able to try something new without losing money.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..
