the hypothesis was that nice teeth = money, rather than money = nice teeth (generally speaking)

Yeah, I agree. Customers with potential lie in a range between perfect and average. The extent of personal concern over this issue seems to me to be partly generational. I think the middle aged customers grew up in a time when the culture didn't put as much emphasis on obtaining teeth as perfectly straight and pearly white as we expect today, nor were the techniques as refined.

For instance, I have an uncle who told me he had a choice when he was a teenager in the 1970s of wearing long-term metal braces that would've given him perfectly aligned teeth or short-term that corrected just enough of the crowding to prevent major problems. To avoid the longer discomfort and embarassment of being called "metal mouth," he chose the latter.

I operate a stripper agency in Connecticut and one of our biggest selling points are that "in addition to looking great, our dancers have good attitudes and nice teeth (ask our competition to smile)." There is anything worst than dancers with fucked up smiles! You can be as hot as the goddess Susan Wayward, but if your missing teeth, you'll always look like a crack whore!

I agree with everybody about the importance of having a great smile. That's the first thing that people look at when talking to you.I've seen people with all kinds of dental problems, but one I sometime notice is strange. They'll have good straight teeth, but very yellow.Of course, the natural shade of teeth varies, but keeping them looking white is also very important.White teeth is always a sign of good health and that you take time to take care of yourself.

Having good teeth definitely made a huge impact on my income - I started stripping at 18 and still wore braces! I used to get a lot of negative comments from customers about them, and I didn't smile nearly as much. Once I got the braces taken off I went and had my teeth whitened, and now I have customers constantly telling me that it's my smile that attracted them to me in the first place! I think my teeth and smile are probably one of my best selling points now.

Sorta off topic, but on the same note.

Look at other industries and teeth. I was wowed by the reviews for MAC cosmetics here. So I went to a MAC -store- not just a counter in Dillards, an actual store. I walk inside, ready to shell over the 60 dollars or whatever it was for a sit-down make-up wardrobe, and ready to shell out probably about 300 bucks IN make-up.

The two women that approached me were not at all attractive, had their make-up poorly done but worst of all their teeth were AWFUL, one had a HUGE split in the middle, and the others were YELLOW (like, I can't believe its not butter, yellow) . I thanked them for their time and politely excused myself.

I was like, "Lemmie get this straight, you're in an industry were you SELL your look - and you come to work with absolutely (or apparently) no effort on your part" - 'course, I didn't say that, I just thought it on my way home. Anyways, point being, if they had worked with their smile, even had it whitened - I would've probably stuck around - but all I could think was, "Is THAT what this stuff is going to make me look like?" - Oh, Hell no.

To be fair, they work in retail. Cosmetic dentistry is expensive! I would have never gotten my teeth fixed if I wasn't making the big bucks strippin'. And OTC bleaching really did nothing for me. I was beyond cheapy methods of fixing my teeth.

I AGREE WITH THIS 100 PERCENT!

why would someone's yellow teeth have anything to do with whether or not you bought MAKEUP from them. Clearly, they are prob making a little over minimum wage and cannot afford 15k on their teeth to get fixed. There is no way in hell i could afford what i spent on my teeth if i wasn't a dancer.

Im sure they know that they dont have perfect teeth, should they stop working all together?

Well, to defend myself a bit. I HAVE had braces, yes. And they cost a little over 2k. Not terribly expensive, but still!

I whiten my teeth with crest whitening strips twice a year (at 24 bucks each time). And I use a whitening toothpaste, usually Rembrandt at 3 or 4 dollars a tube. And I have WHITE teeth. No expensive whitening, no 15k procedures, I'm talking about taking BASIC care and pride in how you look.

And if they worked in make-up (which they do) no matter how BIG of a discount they get selling MAC products (unless they get them free) they're still expensive. So if they can put the money into that, why not elsewhere to help improve their overall appearance.

I suppose I see they way they look, the way they wear their make-up, as a reflection of the products they sell - because someone has taught them, trained them to look that way to market. Unless they just turned some women loose at a make-up counter and said 'sell! sell! sell!' I wouldn't buy a diet pill from a 300lb woman. I wouldn't get braces from a dentist who had awful teeth. I won't buy my make-up look from women who can't seem to apply it themselves.

I suppose I'm going to get flamed for having such a 'judge a book by its cover' outlook. But that’s how I feel when the product you're buying has solely to do with improving your image.

And no, I don't think they should stop working. I'm sure their sales reflect their worth as a retailer. However, net sales from me = zero.

Then again, they could've had people lined up outside the door that day just itching to get in and get their make-up done and I just didn't see them all. Heh.

Wow, braces for 2k! Havent heard of that in 10 years! A single root canal costs about 1200 now. Besides, in most cases it takes more then just braces to make teeth look asthetically pleasing. Not everyone can get white teeth off of 24 dollar strips or kits! All whitening products/toothpaste are also very bad for the enamel on your teeth and a lot of people that are lacking that enamel will find whitening unbearable.

It cost me more then 15k over the past couple of years (yes, even after braces) to have nice looking teeth. My best friend spent over 25 on her teeth. Health insurance now barely covers 1,500 yearly i(f its good) on your teeth to be healthy BUT they dont care about HOW THEY LOOK! You have to pay for that 100 percent.

Mac makeup isnt that expensive. LOL You can get foundation for like what, 24 bucks and eyeliner for around 10, its twice that at lancome, which i prefer! So, that and a disount is like buying makeup at a drugstore.

I understand that you wouldn't get braces from someone w/ awful looking teeth But IN YOUR FIRST post you allude to the reason being their nasty yellow or gapped teeth.

They probably PERSONALLY didnt loose much from you walking out, and im sure would have rather worked with someone who wasnt judging their smiles.
MAC also has a very EDGY look, and it is passed on through its sales associates. So yes, it may be over the top for the average person but not all makeup looks the same applied! LOL

That price for braces floors me as well.. I've had extensive work done in my mouth and at last look at the bill and I'm scared to look now, it was up to two grand. Thats with bartering, as I work on computers too. No telling what it would be if I had to pay for everything.
