Default Conservatives really asserting themselves all over the EU

After this week's conclusive NO votes on EU unification in France and Holland this week, conservative political support is now starting to come out of the closet all over the place

Ultimately, this is likely to oust some Socialist European gov'ts in the next election cycle.

I thought the no vote in Holland actually came from liberal leanings. Conservative or liberal, many citizens do not want to give up their sovreignity to an all-encompassing European goverment that may end up dictating policies that are more liberal or conservative than their own national leanings.

Just my thought, anyway. I'm not a conservative or liberal op-ed Web resource posing as a news site, so I don't know that much.

The issues with the EU Constitution are the same as they've been since its inception:

    --National sovereignty

    --Wealthy nations subsidizing poor nations

--Unaccountable, mainly appointed leadership in Brussels

--Lack of transparency in how the EU operates

Economically, the EU is a great idea. But it's a lost cause with regard to ESDP or Constitutional integration.

ESDP? Extra sensitive digital photography? Electronically serviced dialup protocol? Europe's Shit Deep Periodically?

ESDP - European Security and Defense Policy

It's a unified defense and foreign policy initiative that's about 50 years in the making...and it's still just an idea since no one in Europe wants to commit the political, financial or military resources to make it happen.

What it comes down to, is that when there's a crisis, everyone knows where they have to call in the US to get a response--the White House in Washington DC. The question has always been, "Whom do we call in Europe?" That is what ESDP was supposed to answer, but it's not going to happen because Europeans don't want to do what the Americans and British do with regard to NATO. Moreover, many of the smaller or poorer nations (like the Dutch and the Poles, respectively), feel like the Americans and British are committing most of the money and materiel to NATO, so why the hell do we need an ESDP anyway? Not like Belgium is going to supplant armored American divisions or British Tornado squadrons.

There's your EU IR lesson for the day.
