    Default Paradise Ride 2005

    Scheduled for July 9 to 15, 2005.

This event will benefit the Life Foundation, Maui AIDS Foundation and Kauai AIDS Project. These three agencies provide AIDS/HIV treatment, education and prevention services in Hawaii.

Last year's Paradise Ride raised over $200,000 and we're hoping that this year's Ride will be bigger, better and more successful.

Just thought I'd post the information on the route the Ride will take this year.

Sadly, the Ride will not be going to Molokai. Unfortunate since it was the favorite island of most of the Riders last year. On the day we went to Molokai, we started on Oahu and took the tour bus to the airport. We flew to Maui and road around the island until we got to the ferry port. We then took the ferry on a two hour trip to the port on Molokai. Once on Molokai, we rode to the top of Kalaupapa Lookout and then back to camp. Most of the Riders opted-out of riding to the Lookout and went straight to camp from the ferry port, due to exhaustion.

I did the ride to the Lookout, a seven mile climb on a road with no shade under a burning sun. At some point, I thought about dropping-out and going to camp, but I didnt want to look like a chickenshit in front of all the other Riders who were going up to the Lookout along with me. It felt good, though when we were all at the top.

    ITINERARY

Because we’re still finalizing some of the logistical arrangements, the route and itinerary will be updated as it becomes available. Please check “Latest Ride News” on the home page for recent information, or feel free to contact us at 1-888-285-9866 or [email protected] if you have questions.

Maps of each island are available at http://bestofhawaii.com/maps/maps.shtml.

    Day 0: Saturday July 9

Oahu - Registration and rider check-in, gathering with old friends and meeting new friends, welcome and dinner, and the first safety briefing of the Ride. Take advantage of special rates at the Marriott Waikiki Resort and Spa for Saturday night, July 9, and enjoy the company of other riders as well as easy access to the bike corral!

Days 1 and 2: Sunday and Monday, July 10-11

Oahu - On Sunday morning, we'll leave from Queen's Beach on Waikiki and ride east around Diamond Head, then north up the coast to camp at Kualoa Beach Park. On Monday, the Oahu journey continues to the famous North Shore (think Bonzai Pipeline) for overnight at Mokule`ia Camp. The bicycles will be flown to Maui overnight on Monday, and we'll take a bus to the airport on Tuesday morning for the short flight to Maui.

Day 3 and 4: Tuesday and Wednesday, July 12-13

Maui – On Maui, we'll ride east along the coast, all the way in to Hana. It will undoubtedly be a gorgeous and challenging ride, making for a pretty long day. There will be time for a little more investigation on Wednesday, as we go out the same way we go in - back up the coast to our overnight campground. The bicycles will be flown to Kauai Wednesday night, and on Thursday morning we’ll take a short bus ride to the airport, then a non-stop Hawaiian Airlines flight to Kauai.

Day 5: Thursday and Friday, July 14-15

Kaua`i - Once on Kauai, the route will take us up the "Coconut Coast" traveling north along the east side of the island, up to the famous Hanalei Bay on Kauai's North Shore, the back to camping that evening at Anini Beach Park. Friday's ride will take participants south and inland a bit to the hills around Kapa`a and a quick trip up to the beautiful Kainahola Forestry Arboretum, and back down to the Kauai Radisson Beach Resort and closing ceremonies for the Eighth Annual Paradise Ride – Hawaii’s Ride to Stop AIDS. We all hope you’ll join us for an extraordinary and inspirational week of cycling and fellowship.

The first picture of me was taken on the island of Kauai. It was the beginning of Day Six of the Paradise Ride.

The second pic is me crossing the Finish Line at the end of Day Seven.
