Default My muscles are keeping me awake!

Hey Gals! Lately I've been getting 1-4 hours of sleep a night due to my muscles. I'll lie down but then lie awake for hours, because I feel restlessness in my muscles, or cramps, and I don't know what to do! I've tried prescribed muscle relaxers, taking a walk, even alcohol to excess, and nothing is helping! It's like it's impossible for me to keep still, and I have to move around a lot. Any suggestions? This is really beginning to take its toll on me!

I usually experience nighttime restlessness after really intense workouts. I feel like I need to go out and run a race or work on a heavy bag for an hour. Sometimes, I WILL go out and run or head down to the apartment gym for a mini workout, other times, I have taken unisom. The unisom works sometimes, but you may need to talk to you docter about perscription sleeping aids (ambien, etc.)

Also, there is usually an underlying cause that is mental rather than physical (stress, anxiety, worries...), so it is important to figure out just what it is thats giving you insomnia. Good luck and get some sleep!

Try taking a really hot (as hot as you can stand it) bath with epsom salts. Sometimes muscles get "restless" because of a high concentration of lactic acid build-up (especially if you are working out).

I've found when my muscles were really restless, though, it was because I was worried, or stressed, or anxious (like TampaDancer mentioned). So, just before you get into the tub...start free-associating writing...get those thoughts out of your head. Hope that helps!

Hmm just thought i would throw this up. I know a person who actually has this, and at times keeps him up all night, other nights he is fine.

I don't know, maybe this wil help.

You dance right? Possibly your seating out your bodys salt. Sea salt is best to take - cant remember the doses, 1/4 of a tea spoon daily maybe, cant remember, sorry - try google. The epsom salts should help too.

If you suspect it's lactic acid build up that makes your muscles twitch and cramp, massage your muscles by pinching and twisting them to break up the lactic acid.
It could also be a vitamin deficency. Start taking a multivitamin and see if that helps.
If it's mental, this sounds silly, but it works- starting at your feet, and then moving upwards, start telling your body "goodnight" and don't move further upwards until the part (feet, legs, thighs, etc.) is relaxed. The process and concentration will relax you, like a meditation exercise.

*I'm pretty lazy at stretching but I love this book because it helps w/ dancing moves

I take a weekly trip to the whirlpool...

Lotsa H20, Pure Sea Salt, and sports drinks like Gatorade.

Also it's been a huge help to me if I thank each of my organs/muscle groups (or at least the ones I put through the most work) each night for their assistance. Let them know that I honor and appreciate them and ask what they need from me to continue their job----It's a kind of active meditation where I focus on parts that need focusing, stretch and send love to those parts and pay attention to any warning signs, like over tired muscles, weird aches or pain, etc.
